When Syria’s new interim prime minister, Mohammad al-Bashir, chaired a Cabinet meeting in Damascus on Tuesday, hanging behind him was the flag of the country’s suddenly victorious opposition. That path will largely depend on Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the rebel organization that led the charge into Damascus and is now stewarding Syria’s political overhaul. Its leader, Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, said a decade ago that there would be no room for religious minorities in the Islamist Syria of which he dreamed about. Marc Rowan on Wednesday addressed succession at private-equity giant Apollo Global. After Apollo CEO Marc Rowan's whirlwind candidacy for Trump's Treasury Secretary gig, questions remain about what could become of the firm after Rowan's eventual exit. As Business Insider has previously reported, Wall Street stock analysts view the two Apollo Asset Management copresidents as Rowan's natural successors. Rowan also mentioned "two very, very senior partners" in the firm's retirement services business Athene. But beyond these names, Rowan said there's "another 10 in asset management and another handful in retirement services" who represent "the next generation" of Apollo executives.

Earlier this year, Blackstone rolled out an ownership plan for employees of HVAC company Copeland. The newest rage in private equity seeks to flip that model on its head by offering employees equity on top of their regular salaries. Success in private equity is often evaluated by how much money a deal generates compared to the initial investment. Joe Baratta, global head of private equity at Blackstone BlackstoneAcross the industry, high interest rates have squeezed returns and exit opportunities. KKR's global cohead of private equity, Pete Stavros, also helped found the nonprofit Organizing Works to encourage the adoption of this model across the private equity industry and beyond.

Alex Tai | SOPA Images | Lightrocket | Getty ImagesU.S. consumers have been making the move to all-electric vehicles more slowly than many expected — but a growing leader in EV adoption is Hawaii. Power's "EV Adoption Score," which is weighted based on market, consumer preference and EV availability, among other conditions, with a score of 33.8. Hawaii also is the top state for EV adoption that hasn't agreed to the California Air Resources Board's Zero-Emission Vehicle program, according to J.D. (For reference, the "Hawaii Belt" around the Big Island, or Hawaii Island, is only about 260 miles.) Power reports the top-selling EVs in the state are the Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3 and Ford F-150 Lightning.

Sam Bankman-Fried bilked FTX customers out of over $8 billion, according to prosecutors. AdvertisementAccording to federal prosecutors, Sam Bankman-Fried orchestrated one of the biggest criminal frauds in the history of the world. According to his lawyers, FTX's customers might get all their money back. According to prosecutors, Bankman-Fried was responsible for more than $11 billion in fraud overall between FTX customers and investors in FTX and Alameda Research. The recovered calculations, too, distort how much money customers are actually getting back.

In this crowded field, Vancouver-based Filament Health has a unique approach: extracting drugs like psilocybin and mescaline from natural sources, including mushrooms and cacti, rather than synthesizing the ingredients in a laboratory. Filament CEO Benjamin Lightburn spoke with The Associated Press about the ethical, therapeutic and medical case for using naturally derived psychedelics. Q: What do you mean by “natural psychedelics” and how are they produced? A: The iboga plant, which contains the psychedelic ibogaine, is probably the best example of that at Filament. There is a ton of interest from different researchers all around the world to use our psychedelic drugs.

Reddit Wants to Grow Up. Will Its Community Let It?

For the past 11 years, Bucky has put time and effort into stewarding and guiding dozens of communities on Reddit, the sprawling internet message board. Reddit had just introduced changes that sharply increased its fees for independent developers who build apps using the company’s data. Steve Huffman, Reddit’s chief executive, positioned the move partly as a way to shore up the company’s finances as it heads toward a long-awaited initial public offering. But the changes made it so expensive for some third-party developers that a handful who build tools for Reddit’s moderators had to shut down or significantly alter their apps. In protest, Bucky and other moderators closed down hundreds of forums on the site, effectively making Reddit unusable for many of its 57 million daily visitors.

The 1989 FA Cup semi-final was the scene of Britain's worst sporting disaster when 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death in an over-crowded and fenced-in enclosure in the lower tier. "Policing has profoundly failed those bereaved by the Hillsborough disaster over many years and we are sorry that the service got it so wrong," Chief Constable Andy Marsh, CEO of the College of Policing, said in a statement. "Police failures were the main cause of the tragedy and have continued to blight the lives of family members ever since. "Collectively, the changes made since the Hillsborough disaster and in response to Rt Reverend James Jones's report aim to ensure the terrible police failures made on the day and in the aftermath can never happen again," he added. Earlier this month, Newcastle United fans complained of "overcrowding and crushing" and a lack of stewarding at the Hillsborough Stadium during their FA Cup match against Sheffield Wednesday at the same Leppings Lane End.
See's CEO Pat Egan spoke to Insider in April 2022 about Berkshire, COVID-19, inflation, and growth. He touted the value of See's brand, its supplier ties, and its control of manufacturing and retail. Buffett has described See's as his "dream business" due to its beloved brand, modest capital needs, and stellar cash generation. It was "spared a lot of the pressures" that other manufacturers faced during the pandemic, Egan said. "Once you're a See's customer, you're kind of a See's customer for life," Egan said.
