North Carolina Republican lawmakers voted to strip the state’s incoming Democratic governor and attorney general of key powers, passing a sweeping bill before the GOP likely loses their veto-proof supermajority in the Legislature next year. That power currently lies with the governor's office, which will remain in Democratic hands after Attorney General Josh Stein defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Republicans have long sought control of the state Board of Elections, which is historically controlled by the same party as the current governor, but their past efforts have been foiled by the courts. But that hasn’t stopped abortion rights supporters from pushing for votes up and down the ballot. Across the South, supporters of abortion rights are using the issue to motivate voters. Although Texas does not have a statewide referendum on abortion, Rep. Colin Allred's Senate campaign has galvanized abortion rights supporters. It’s easier for Democrats to campaign on the issue, she said, because their party is more united in favor of abortion rights than Republicans are in opposition. That switch proved pivotal in passing the state’s abortion ban.

In NBC News’ early October national survey, just 4% of registered voters said they didn’t want to make a choice between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. One said they plan to vote for Trump, another that they are likely to vote for Harris, and another plans to not vote at all. How anyone could still be undecided a week out from a critical election can be difficult to fathom for supporters of either Trump or Harris.
