The lawsuit seeks to force Pepsi and Frito-Lay to clean up wrappers and bottles on the shores of the Buffalo River.
Microplastics have been found in fish species and in Buffalo's drinking water supply, the lawsuit alleges.
"No company is too big to ensure that their products do not damage our environment and public health.
"We will not sit idly by as our waterways become polluted again, this time from ever-growing single-use plastic pollution."
It also asks that the company take steps to prevent additional plastic pollution from entering the Buffalo River.
