Gold ticks higher as safe-haven bids offset firm dollar
  + stars: | 2024-10-24 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Gold bars seen at Gold Investments bullion dealers in London, U.K., on January 15, 2014. Gold prices drifted higher on Thursday, as safe-haven demand countered a firmer dollar, while palladium hit a more than one-month peak. Spot gold rose 0.3% to $2,725.51 per ounce by 0143 GMT. A stronger dollar makes gold more expensive for other currency holders. "The Fed's monetary easing cycle, stimulus measures in China, and supply constraints will continue to drive silver prices higher into 2025 where it could potentially scale higher levels of around $45," Sachdeva said.

Projections from ORF public television based on exit polls suggest that the pro-Russia, anti-immigration Freedom Party, or FPÖ, has finished first, with 29.1% of the vote. It appears to have knocked the ruling conservative Österreichische Volkspartei (ÖVP), or Austrian People’s Party, into second place, with 26.2% of the vote. But it has fallen far short of an absolute majority in the tight election and will need help to form a stable government. But even if the party fails to form a coalition government, the result will serve as a symbolic victory for the far right. Chancellor and ÖVP leader Karl Nehammer has so far ruled out any coalition that includes Kickl.

People walk past election campaign billboards showing Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer of the Austrian People's Party (OeVP) and Herbet Kickl of the far-right Austria Freedom Party (FPOe) on September 24, 2024 in Vienna, Austria. A far-right party founded by former Nazis appeared to have won Austria's election Sunday, in a result that could reshape Europe's political landscape and help tilt the balance of power between Russia and the West. They appear to have edged out the ruling conservative Österreichische Volkspartei (ÖVP) or Austrian People's Party, into second place with 26.2% of the vote. But even if the party fails to form a coalition government, the result will serve as a symbolic victory for the far-right. The OVP is the only party that has been open to allying with the far-right party in the past, and it remains to be scene whether they will accept the role of sidekick this time around.

Though Austria is a member of the European Union, its far-right party leading the polls has strong links with Russian President Vladimir Putin — the bloc’s arch nemesis. The chairman and top candidate of the Freedom Party of Austria Herbert Kickl waves to supporters after kicking off his party's electoral campaign on September 7, 2024 in Graz, Austria. Kickl’s vision is to build “Fortress Austria” and “Fortress Europe,” as he put it during a debate on Austrian public television Thursday night. In 2016, party leader Heinz-Christian Strache signed a formal “cooperation pact” with Putin’s United Russia party. The FPÖ’s return is far from certain, currently polling at 27%, narrowly ahead of the ruling Austrian People’s Party on 25% and the Social Democratic Party of Austria on 21%, according to European polling aggregator PolitPro.

Reuters —Russia appears to have suffered a “catastrophic failure” in a test of its Sarmat missile, a key weapon in the modernization of its nuclear arsenal, according to arms experts who have analyzed satellite images of the launch site. It’s a big hole in the ground,” said Pavel Podvig, an analyst based in Geneva, who runs the Russian Nuclear Forces project. A September 21 satellite image shows a closer view of the launch site after the apparent launch failure. Maxar TechnologiesIISS analyst Wright said a test failure did not necessarily mean that the Sarmat program was in jeopardy. “However, this is the fourth successive test failure of Sarmat which at the very least will push back its already delayed introduction into service even further and at most might raise questions about the program’s viability,” he said.

Why dividend stocks should be a hot play into fall
  + stars: | 2024-08-24 | by ( Ellie Stevens | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
It appears more investors are eyeing dividend stocks ahead of the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision in September. Paul Baiocchi of SS&C ALPS Advisors thinks it is a sound strategy because he sees the Fed easing rates. ALPS is the issuer of several dividend exchange-traded funds including the ALPS O'Shares U.S. Quality Dividend ETF (OUSA) and its counterpart, the ALPS O'Shares U.S. Small-Cap Quality Dividend ETF (OUSM). Relative to the S&P 500 , both dividend ETFs are overweight health care, financials and industrials , according to Baiocchi. Mike Akins, ETF Action's founding partner, views OUSA and OUSM as defensive strategies because the stocks generally have clean balance sheets.

Walter Arlen, a Viennese musical prodigy who fled to the United States after Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938 and became a music critic and a late-in-life composer of Holocaust and Jewish-exile remembrances in song, died on Sept. 3, 2023, in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 103. The death, in a hospital, was not widely reported at the time; Howard Myers, Mr. Arlen’s husband and sole survivor, confirmed it to The New York Times only recently. Mr. Arlen and Mr. Myers, longtime residents of Santa Monica, had been companions for 65 years and were married in 2008 after California’s Supreme Court upheld the legality of same-sex marriages. Even after eight decades, Mr. Arlen’s memories remained vivid — of his father being dragged off to a concentration camp; of his mother’s nervous breakdown and suicide; of his family’s home, business and bank accounts stolen by the Nazi authorities; and of witnessing the vicious murder of an older Jew by an SS guard.

Read previewThe local SWAT team assigned to guard former President Donald Trump's rally on July 13 said it had "no communication" with the Secret Service before a gunman tried to assassinate him. In an interview published by ABC on Sunday, Woods and his team members said the first time they communicated with Secret Service agents on the ground was only after the shooting. But The Washington Post reported on Sunday that Secret Service members on Trump's detail complained they never received the warning from the countersnipers in the AGR building. The aftermath of the assassination attempt, which put Trump within inches of losing his life, has been a reckoning for the Secret Service. "The assassination attempt of former President Trump on July 13th is the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades," Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle said on July 22.

"Last week, prices scaled record highs on bets of a September U.S. rate cut. The U.S. personal consumption expenditure data for June — the Federal Reserve's favored measure of inflation — is due at 1230 GMT. PIMCO economist Peder Beck-Friis says that high US debt levels do not pose an immediate threat. Before that happens, volatility will rise in financial markets and the macro economy, he noted. AdvertisementInvestors shouldn't fear US debt crisis just yet, as the situation is more benign than it appears, PIMCO econmist Peder Beck-Friis wrote on Thursday. In an op-ed in The Financial Times, Beck-Friis wrote that investors will need to prepare for higher instability before policymakers treat the debt seriously. Like many other big-name market observers, he argued that the aggressive rise in the US debt will eventually hit unsustainable levels.

Police scuffle with protesters who block access near the venue where AfD delegates are holding a conference. According to the organization, around 7,000 Widersetzen protesters were on the streets of Essen on Saturday morning, with more expected in the afternoon.
