Netflix's cheaper, ad-supported tier has reached 70 million global monthly active users two years after it was launched. The company said Tuesday more than 50% of its new sign-ups are for ad-supported plans in countries that offer the option. When Netflix launched its ad platform two years ago, the company said Nielsen would rate its content. Netflix offered its last update on its ad-supported tier in May, when it said it reached 40 million global monthly active users, nearly doubling the figure it had shared in January. Netflix also announced in May it would launch its own advertising platform, ending a partnership with Microsoft for that technology.

As BetMGM tries to regain momentum in the gaming market, it's banking in part on gains in NFL betting and the draw of new technology. CEO Adam Greenblatt is counting on newly launched technology to woo customers, he told CNBC on Tuesday at the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. During the spring baseball season, BetMGM credited the new tech for powering a 209% increase in MLB home run betting over the same time frame a year earlier. "What we are seeing now, year on year, season to date for NFL, 125% increase in first-time depositors in Vegas. "Our players are coming back from week to week in a way, in a more engaged way than in prior periods," he said.

Sports betting is continuing its integration into modern sports culture, and industry leaders do not expect the growth to slow down any time soon. As much tailwind as sports betting companies have received from growing legalization and popularity across the country, taxes and ethical concerns have presented difficulties. Several states have a 51% tax on sports betting companies, and Illinois recently approved a tax increase on sports betting revenue. Sports betting has also garnered negative headlines in recent months as professional sports leagues have struggled to effectively stop players from violating betting and gambling rules. The speakers also addressed widespread concerns about whether the nature of sports betting companies' business models discourages them from providing proper guardrails to stop gambling problems.

I live in the great state of New York, where online sports gambling has been legal since 2022. Different state, different gambling rulesMy trash-chute gambling pilgrimage is specific to me, but it represents one of the many quirks of the legalized gambling industry. When you're in New York, you're not allowed to bet on in-state colleges. Leagues love gambling, until they don'tBut what makes this new era of sports gambling particularly confusing is the relationship between sportsbooks and the leagues they're setting lines for. Yet despite all the promotion (and sponsorship money) touting sports gambling, athletes betting on their own games is still very much banned.

Executives at ESPN and Penn Entertainment hope that's true of ESPN Bet, which will soon debut in the Big Apple as football season heats up. The company hopes its massive platform and popular talent will attract new users to ESPN Bet. A far lower spend rate than its peers drove the service's market share below 4% in the first quarter of 2024, BofA estimated. In those states, ESPN Bet's share is generally between 3% and 6%. AdvertisementThat gives ESPN's namesake betting app a big advantage, but it's unclear whether that will be enough in the ruthless sports betting market.

U.S. adults will wager $35 billion this NFL season, according to projections from the American Gaming Association. Since last NFL season, Maine, North Carolina and Vermont have allowed sports betting operators to launch in their states. "The NFL season is our biggest acquisition period of the year," said Christian Genetski, president of FanDuel, the nation's leading sportsbook. Since then, Fanatics Sportsbook acquired PointsBet's U.S. operations and technology, which is now fully integrated. It first launched in November last year, smack in the middle of NFL season.

Penn Entertainment will lay off about 100 employees as it focuses on growth for ESPNBet. "This led us to temporarily set aside any potential organizational changes that would typically follow a major acquisition." Penn went on to say it's embarking on a new phase of growth in its interactive business, which include ESPNBet, a $2 billion branding partnership with Disney's ESPN. Penn's release of new ESPNBet features this fall during football season should meaningfully improve its product, Jonas said, and a focus on costs indicate the company's commitment to seeing its investment yield results. NYSEIn 2018, British regulators sanctioned the UK arm of online gambling giant Flutter after it failed to catch an astonishing anomaly. The United States is Flutter's largest and fastest-growing market in terms of revenue. Both online sports betting and online casinos have been legal and regulated far longer in Britain than in the United States. But in the United States, Flutter doesn't place such limits on the age group. Around a decade ago, British politicians became concerned about a rise in gambling-linked fraud and suicides involving online VIP customers.

The future of ESPN's sports-betting app is now in question amid mounting losses and an activist investor push at partner Penn Entertainment that has prompted sale rumors. The app, ESPN Bet, made early strides in the first few months, gaining ground through promotions and marketing that leveraged ESPN's popular personalities. As of March, ESPN Bet had captured about 4% of the online-sports-betting market by gross gaming revenue, per Bank of America's analysis, though its share has been higher in states like Pennsylvania. "Testers liked ESPN Bet's UX and minty aesthetic but felt the app lacked depth (particularly more extensive features)," EKG wrote in May. "Product is one thing, and I would say having expertise in how to target users effectively to lower your acquisition costs and your retention costs" is key for the ESPN Bet app to compete, Wasiolek said.

The app, ESPN Bet, made early strides in the first few months, gaining ground through promotions and marketing that leveraged ESPN's popular personalities. Even Fanatics, the industry's other major recent disrupter, hasn't made much of a dent in DraftKings' and FanDuel's dominance. As of March, ESPN Bet had captured about 4% of the online-sports-betting market by gross gaming revenue, per Bank of America's analysis, though its share has been higher in states like Pennsylvania. Major League Baseball said Friday night it has disciplined umpire Pat Hoberg for violating the league’s gambling rules, and that he is being held out of games during this season while an appeal is considered. Multiple players have been punished for gambling violations, including Tucupita Marcano, who got a lifetime ban for betting on baseball. Now, an umpire has been punished, with Hoberg becoming the only known umpire in recent history to have been disciplined for a matter related to gambling. “During this year’s Spring Training, Major League Baseball commenced an investigation regarding a potential violation of MLB’s sports betting policies by Umpire Pat Hoberg,” MLB said in a statement. AdvertisementThe most severe is that anyone found to have gambled on a baseball game they are directly tied to — “any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform,” as the rules formally put it — is to be banned permanently from the game.

Major League Baseball permanently banned San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano on Tuesday for placing hundreds of bets on baseball, including wagers on the Pittsburgh Pirates when he was a member of the team last season. MLB’s Department of Investigations found Marcano placed 387 baseball bets, including 231 MLB-related bets, through a legal sportsbook in 2022 and 2023, the league said. The Department of Investigations found all four players placed MLB-related bets while in the minors. MLB said a legal sports betting operator informed the league in March that it had “identified past baseball betting activity” from accounts connected to multiple players. He placed 29 baseball bets, including 28 MLB-related bets and one parlay bet on college baseball games in 2021 and 2022, the league said.

Sports bettors flocked to ESPN Bet after its mid-November launch. Taking 10% to 20% market share by 2027 no longer seemed like such a stretch — even in a crowded, competitive space. ESPN Bet's share of the online sports betting market has dipped in recent months. The gamble may be riskier than analysts thought, and it will be an outright disaster if ESPN Bet doesn't perform better than Barstool Sportsbook. The Dublin-based parent company of FanDuel launched a secondary listing of its shares on the New York Stock Exchange on Jan. 29. Shareholders have since voted to making the NYSE the primary listing for the stock rather than London, and that change is slated to take effect May 31. UBS analyst Ben Shelley said in a May 9 note to clients that the primary listing change could help close those gaps. Flutter is not the only company in recent years to shift its primary listing to the U.S., and the track records of those companies could be a positive sign for Flutter. UBS pointed to building materials companies CRH — which transitioned its primary listing to the NYSE in September 2023 — and Ferguson — which made the switch in May 2022 — as examples.
