Conyers residents Kisha and Akeno Reid say they have suffered ongoing symptoms since the BioLab fire more than a month ago. An emerging movement against in vitro fertilization is driving some doctors and patients in red states to move or destroy frozen embryos. The embryo migration is most striking in Alabama, where the State Supreme Court ruled in February that embryos were “unborn children.” Since then, at least four of Alabama’s seven fertility clinics have hired biotech companies to move the cells elsewhere. A fifth clinic is working with a doctor in New York to discard embryos because of concerns about the legality of doing so in Alabama. Since the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, 14 states have passed total or near total abortion bans. And the Southern Baptists, the country’s largest Protestant denomination, voted in June to oppose I.V.F., calling for the protection of “frozen embryonic human beings.”

Antelopes, hundreds of thousands of them, are crossing the savannas of South Sudan. But a report published today estimates that South Sudan is home to the largest known migration of land mammals on Earth. South Sudan, a country in central Africa, has a varied landscape, from rainforests to lush savannas and swamplands fed by the Nile River (pictured). Marcus Westberg He suspects that the migration’s survival and growth is likely to be linked to the decades of war South Sudan has suffered. In 2011, archaeologists in the Netherlands discovered an ancient pit filled with 86,000 animal bones at a Roman-Era farmstead near the city of Utrecht. It fell to Martijn van Haasteren, an archaeozoologist at the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, to sort through them. Deep into the cataloging process, Mr. van Haasteren was cleaning the mud from yet another bone when something unexpected happened: Hundreds of black specks the size of poppy seeds came pouring out from one end. The specks turned out to be seeds of black henbane, a potently poisonous member of the nightshade family that can be medicinal or hallucinogenic depending on the dosage. The bone — hollowed-out and sealed with a tar plug — was an ancient stash pouch that had kept the seeds safe for some 1,900 years.

Some Tesla Cybertruck owners noticed their new stainless steel vehicles have small rust specks. A few months after deliveries began, some members of a Cybertruck-owners forum started complaining about rust spots on the vehicle. After all, the Cybertruck is the first stainless steel vehicle to be produced since DMC made the stainless steel DeLorean and later halted production in 1982. The extra upkeep isn't entirely unexpected for experienced Tesla owners, many of whom have taken on the role of early adopters. If Tesla hits Musk's ambitious production targets for the Cybertruck, Tesla is likely to face less forgiving buyers, automotive analyst Ivan Drury told BI.

Microplastics Are a Big Problem, a New Film Warns

It’s been more than five decades since Dustin Hoffman’s character in “The Graduate” was offered a kernel of wisdom about the path to prosperity. “Plastics,” he’s told by Mr. McGuire, the starched corporate executive who offers the advice. “There’s a great future in plastics.”Plastics have indeed been a game changer for humanity, and the enormous range of cheap, durable plastic goods, from food containers and PVC pipes to polyester clothing and single-use medical products, have inarguably improved life. The problem, as nearly everyone knows, is that plastics are forever and very little of it has been recycled. The U.N. has estimated that most of the 400 million metric tons churned out annually — a doubling of production since 2000 — will remain on Earth in some form as they are broken down into teeny specks by sunlight, wind and the sea.

One owner even said they'd been warned when the truck was delivered that it could rust in the rain. "The advisor specifically mentioned the Cybertrucks develop orange rust marks in the rain and that required the vehicle to be buffed out," a member of the Cybertruck Owners Club forum wrote. Stainless is reactive and free iron that sits on it will rust," the Cybertruck engineer said. Demaree said the latter method appeared to do the trick but advised Cybertruck owners to be careful using the polish on the truck. Tesla delivered its first dozen on November 30, and several celebrities have been spotted with their own Cybertrucks in the months since.

“I wanted to burn my house down.”Any parent dealing with head lice can probably relate to this situation. Head lice have unfortunately become a part of raising children today, said Deborah Altschuler, president of the National Pediculosis Association. Lauren Salzberg (R), also known as Lice-Lady, treats a customer for head lice in her studio, a converted garage, in Potomac, Maryland, in November 2015. Head lice are most common among young children — 6 million to 12 million lice outbreaks occur yearly in children between 3 and 11 in the US — though adults are vulnerable to head lice as well. The best way to check if a child has lice is with a lice comb, Altschuler said.

REUTERS/Nacho DoceAGULLANA, Spain, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Artur Duran holds his hand out by his waist to show the level of water he remembers two years ago at the Darnius Boadella reservoir in northeastern Spain. Catalonia's authorities last week imposed new water usage restrictions on 22 villages around the reservoir, near the French border, as the aquifer supplying them is also emptying. Several heatwaves recorded in Spain and wider Europe this summer have worsened the drought, lowering reservoirs' levels as water evaporation and consumption increased, said Ruben del Campo, spokesperson for Spain's meteorological agency AEMET. The village of Agullana with 900 residents has been keeping its water usage below the 200-litre cap for several months, but its mayor said further steps will be implemented.

On a recent June morning in Brooklyn, Chloe Sarre nearly drifted into sleep on a bed in a cozy room as a makeup artist used a needle dipped in a semipermanent liquid pigment to carefully prick about 20 microscopic dots across her cheeks. Keila Cummings, the artist and a co-owner of Browstress, a cosmetic tattoo shop, was blotting off excess ink with a baby wipe as Ali Gatie’s “Used to You” floated through her 10th-floor studio in the neighborhood of Dumbo. “Oh, that doesn’t hurt at all,” said Ms. Sarre, a 35-year-old women’s fitness trainer who lives in Brooklyn. “Honestly, the eyebrow waxing is worse.”Before her appointment, Ms. Sarre had drawn specks on herself with an eyebrow pencil to wear the latest beauty trend that thousands of people across the country are trying out: freckle tattoos. Available in the shape of hearts, stars or even astrological signs, the melanin-filled skin marks, once a cause for schoolyard torment, have become the latest TikTok obsession.

The last time Christine Dawood saw her husband, Shahzada, and their son, Suleman, they were specks on the North Atlantic, bobbing on a floating platform about 400 miles from land. It was Father’s Day, June 18, and she watched from the support ship as they climbed into a 22-foot submersible craft called Titan. Divers closed them inside by tightening a ring of bolts as the craft rolled on the waves about 13,000 feet above the 111-year-old wreckage of the Titanic. Shahzada had a Nikon camera, eager to capture the view of the seafloor through Titan’s single porthole. “He was like a vibrating toddler,” said Christine, who stayed on the support ship at the surface with the couple’s daughter, Alina.

The Man Who Turned the World on to the Genius of Fungi
  + stars: | 2023-06-08 | by ( Jennifer Kahn | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
Plants managed to leave water and grow on land only because of their collaboration with fungi, which acted as their root systems for millions of years. Even today, roughly 90 percent of plants and nearly all the world’s trees depend on fungi, which supply crucial minerals by breaking down rock and other substances. They can also be a scourge, eradicating forests — Dutch elm disease and chestnut blight are fungi — and killing humans. Without fungi, matter wouldn’t decay; the planet would be buried under layers of dead and unrotted trees and vegetation. But where “Fantastic Fungi” fell decidedly into the old-school, ’shroom-head camp, Sheldrake’s book is more embracing and more optimistic.
