People take part in a rally to demand South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's removal from power, in Seoul, South Korea, December 4, 2024. South Korean lawmakers on Wednesday called for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol after he declared martial law only to reverse the move hours later, triggering the biggest political crisis in decades in Asia's fourth-largest economy. Yoon told the nation in a TV address that martial law was needed to defend the country from nuclear-armed North Korea and pro-North anti-state forces, and protect its free constitutional order, although he cited no specific threats. The military said activities by parliament and political parties would be banned, and that media and publishers would be under the control of the martial law command. But within hours of the declaration, South Korea's parliament, with 190 of its 300 members present, unanimously passed a motion requiring martial law be lifted, including all 18 members present from Yoon's party.

Mission teams are working to understand what caused an automatic hold of Starliner's launch minutes before liftoff and focusing on safely extracting the crew. Currently, the rocket and spacecraft are in a safe configuration, according to the NASA broadcast. Later today, the rocket tanks will be drained of propellant, which is called detanking. Meanwhile, mission teams will analyze the countdown sequence to find out what caused the hold, which remains unknown at this time. The Ground Launch Sequencer, or computer that essentially launches the rocket, performs key actions during the final 10 minutes before launch, like pressurizing the fuel tanks for launch, transitioning the vehicle to its onboard batteries from ground electrical systems and configuring other systems for launch.

Small- and mid-cap companies have long lagged the broader market due to a slew of challenges, including higher interest rate expectations. However, the strategy head acknowledged that not all small- and mid-cap stocks are the same. The former has been the most consistent small-cap group in economic regimes like this one, though quality stocks can also be a strong choice. Below are the other eight SMID-cap stocks with earnings prospects that Bank of America is bullish about now. Wall Street reacted Thursday to this week's Fed meeting, with forecasts scattered across a range of outcomes for where monetary policy heads next. Most economists for the biggest forecasting firms expect the central bank to lower benchmark interest rates sometime later this year. Goldman left in place its call for two rate cuts this year of a quarter percentage point each, with one in July and the other in November. "If inflation comes in stronger than in our baseline, we would expect the first rate cut to be postponed to December," he wrote. For 2025, we continue to expect four rate cuts."

They are requesting that the Commerce Department impose tariffs on solar cell imports from the four countries as a remedy. The primary season is about to shift into overdrive with Super Tuesday, when Republican voters in 15 states will cast their votes. Polls suggest that former President Donald Trump is very likely to win most, if not all, of these contests. I spoke with Nate Cohn, The New York Times’s chief political analyst, about when Trump’s nomination could become a lock. If the polls are right, there’s really only one scenario: Trump finding himself within easy striking distance of the nomination. Put it together, and Trump could easily win more than 90 percent of the delegates available on Super Tuesday.

CNN —Britain’s Tyson Fury has postponed his undisputed heavyweight title fight against Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk after sustaining “a freak cut” above his eye during a sparring session, the fight promoters said in a statement. The clash between WBC champion Fury and WBO, WBA and IBF champion Usyk has long been anticipated in the boxing world since the winner would become the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999. “I feel bad for everyone involved in this huge event and I will work diligently towards the rescheduled date once the eye has healed.”Fury suffered a cut above his eye in a sparring session. Zac Goodwin/PA/APThe bout had already been rescheduled once from its original December 23 date after Fury required more time to recover from a controversial, tougher than expected fight against former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. For South Africa as a whole, three quarters of its vehicle production is exported. At the same time, South Africa's policy paper on EVs is two years behind schedule. "The train (EV shift) is a global one, and it's leaving the station. If South Africa doesn't jump onto the train, it runs the risk of being left behind," Mark Raine, co-CEO Mercedes-Benz Cars South Africa, told Reuters in an interview. Specifically, South Africa will need to boost local demand by cutting the import tax for EVs, setting up large-scale EV charging stations and investing in skills needed for the new ecosystem that EVs bring, he said.

Lawmakers are especially concerned about the use of AI to creates content that falsely depicts candidates in political advertisements to influence federal elections. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer told reporters a day after the AI forum that included technology leaders including Tesla (TSLA.O) CEO Elon Musk, Meta Platforms (META.O) CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Alphabet (GOOGL.O) CEO Sundar Pichai that election AI legislation may need to move faster. "Some things may have to go sooner than others and elections is one of the things that we may have to try to do soonest," Schumer said on Thursday.
