People say it looks like a lightning bolt from the SS, a Nazi unit in World War II. Adidas said it's blocked fans from making jerseys with the "44," and an alternative design is being developed. AdvertisementAdidas has removed the option for fans to customize their soccer jerseys with the number "44" amid concerns that a design for the German national team resembles a Nazi symbol. Known widely as the SS, this unit was responsible for many of the war crimes and atrocities committed by Nazi Germany in World War II. DAMIEN MEYER/AFP via Getty ImagesAdidas told the BBC that the jerseys were designed by the German Football Association and weren't intentionally made to look like the SS logo.

Racks of England's new Nike designed football shirt, with the controversial St George's cross, are displayed for sale in a central London store on March 22, 2024. LONDON — U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Friday said Nike was wrong to "mess with" the design of the flag on the England soccer team's new shirt, as a controversy that began on social media broadened into the political sphere. They feature a small version of the St. George's Cross — which appears on the England flag in red on a white background — on the collar in different shades including purple and blue. The design was criticized by a large number of people on social media who said a national flag should not be altered, while others argued the debate was being overblown. The hashtag #BoycottNike was shared by a significant number of accounts on social media platform X.Sunak on Friday said he "prefers the original," the BBC reported.

After a rocky start to his tenure, Klinsmann has guided Korea to three straight wins in friendly matches and should make it five victories on the trot against 155th-ranked Singapore and number 79 China. "All the teams that fight for a spot in the World Cup will fight even harder now. We will be very serious in every World Cup qualifying game." South Korea, number 24 in the FIFA rankings, have won the Asian Cup twice, but the regional heavyweights have not lifted the trophy since 1960.

NICE, France, Sept 15 (Reuters) - England face Japan in the Rugby World Cup in Nice on Sunday hoping to avoid any sort of repeat of one of the country's lowest sporting moments when the national soccer team were humbled in the city by Iceland at the 2016 Euros. The footballing disaster was the final act for manager Roy Hodgson, paving the way for Gareth Southgate to start the rebuilding job that took England to a World Cup semi-final and a penalty shoot-out final defeat in the last Euros. England's rugby team had gone through a similar process eight months earlier as their pool-stage exit from their own World Cup in 2015 after Twickenham defeats to Wales and Australia spelled the end for Stuart Lancaster. It was a brilliant performance and, coming on the back of a Six Nations title earlier in the year, there was huge confidence surging through the England set-up. They have struggled though to reproduce anything like that form since though and the chances of another shock look slim - even in Nice.

Sept 12 (Reuters) - The 2023 Rugby World Cup kicked off in France on Friday, and while the competition is already a roaring success, it's not always front page news even within countries involved. Italy began their Rugby World Cup campaign with a win over Namibia on Saturday, but picking up the country's most popular sports newspaper, La Gazzetta dello Sport, the day after, there was no mention on the front page. The newspaper's main rugby journalist, Andrea Buongiovanni, explained the reasons behind this. "It's a question of tradition, and in my opinion, considering the small following rugby has in Italy, we give the Rugby World Cup ample coverage." It will take more than a win in their next game with Uruguay to push the Rugby World Cup onto the front pages.

March 30 (Reuters) - Former Canada Soccer president Nick Bontis does not remember using insulting language towards Christine Sinclair when she brought the women's soccer team's concerns to him but has apologised for the incident, he said on Thursday. Sinclair, the world's all-time leading international goal scorer, appeared before a parliamentary committee three weeks ago to speak about pay equity, equal treatment and other issues surrounding Canada Soccer. "Few people have done more for soccer or women's sport in this country than Christine," said Bontis. "She has not only inspired millions of young soccer players around the world she inspired me. "Unlocking the full potential of players who want to follow in Christine's footsteps was a large part of why I got involved with Canada Soccer."

Nov 21 (Reuters) - FIFA has rejected the Belgium soccer team's away strip because of the word "Love" in the collar combined with a rainbow-coloured trim on the shirt, a spokesperson for the Red Devils said on Monday. The design was inspired by the fireworks of Belgian's famous music festival Tomorrowland and stands for diversity, equality and inclusivity. If the word 'Love' is removed from the inside of the shirt, the team is allowed to wear it. The away shirts are a new design and were introduced in September. The Belgian Football Association said earlier on Monday that its captain Eden Hazard will not play wearing the armband.
