The Food and Drug Administration expanded the approval of weight loss drug Zepbound to treat obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity, the drugmaker Eli Lilly said Friday. The expanded approval could persuade more insurance companies — which have been reluctant to cover the expensive weight loss drugs — to pay for the medication. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the upper airway becomes blocked during sleep, cutting off airflow throughout the night. The approval is based on two trials of men and women with obesity and moderate to severe sleep apnea. Other sleep apnea treatmentsMany people who have sleep apnea go undiagnosed and untreated.

CNN —The US Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved the first prescription medicine for obstructive sleep apnea: the weight-loss drug Zepbound. “This is a major step forward for patients with obstructive sleep apnea,” Dr. Sally Seymour, director of the FDA’s Division of Pulmonology, Allergy, and Critical Care, said in the FDA announcement. Obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, affects as many as 30 million people in the USand is closely associated with obesity, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, which notes that weight loss can reduce its severity. It’s characterized by breathing disruptions during sleep caused by blocked airflow and increases the risk of heart and brain problems. Patients on the drug also saw reductions in blood pressure and inflammation, “important risk factors for cardiovascular complications of obstructive sleep apnea with obesity,” researchers wrote in the New England Journal of Medicine.

A husband who organized the mass rape of his wife for nearly a decade, knocking her unconscious with drugs and sharing pictures and video of the assaults, should receive the maximum 20-year prison sentence, a French prosecutor said Monday. Dominique Pelicot, 71, has admitted the charges in a trial that attracted worldwide attention and turned into an examination of the pervasiveness of sexual violence in France and beyond. “The maximum sentence is 20 years, which is a lot... but at the same time ... too little in view of the seriousness of the acts that were committed and repeated,” public prosecutor Laure Chabaud told the court. The prosecutors will over the next two days say what sentence they seek against each of them. Dominique Pelicot’s lawyer Beatrice Zavarro told reporters it was not a surprise that prosecutors had sought the longest sentence possible.

CNN —Already multitool smart devices, Apple Watches added another buzzworthy feature last month: an app to detect sleep apnea. The sleep apnea notification is available on the latest Series 10 Apple Watches and some older models after a software update. In order to detect sleep apnea, the watch measures breathing disturbances during sleep over 30 days. But the US Food and Drug Administration approved marketing of the sleep apnea feature on Apple Watches in mid-September. The Apple Watch has a few of these capabilities, but the company did not factor them into the sleep apnea feature.

Sue Clasen kept trying to manage her sleep apnea. The CPAP’s mask felt bulky and irritating — she just couldn’t sleep with it on. But when she took it off and fell asleep, her husband soon nudged her awake: Her snoring, a common symptom of sleep apnea, was so loud it woke the whole room up. The worst of her sleep apnea symptoms have vanished. More Americans with obstructive sleep apnea, the most common form of the disorder, may soon turn to weight-loss drugs.

An injection pen of Zepbound, Eli Lilly’s weight loss drug, is displayed in New York City, U.S., December 11, 2023. Eli Lilly on Wednesday said its highly popular weight loss drug Zepbound showed the potential to treat patients with the most common sleep-related breathing disorder in two late-stage clinical trials. Zepbound was more effective than a placebo at reducing the severity of obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, in patients with obesity after a year, according to preliminary data from both trials. Eli Lilly previously announced that the FDA granted Zepbound "fast track designation" for patients with moderate-to-severe OSA and obesity. Zepbound has slipped into shortages since receiving approval in the U.S. for weight management in November.

When I went sober six years ago, dating and getting laid was the last thing on my mind. After all, I'd gone sober for a reason: to self-optimize, and I couldn't do that with a man snoring in my ear. It felt like alcohol and I had always been in an open relationship, but now it was time for me to fly solo.
