A New York City suburb's ban against public mask wearing was challenged in federal court on Thursday, alleging the law violates the Americans with Disabilities Act and needlessly opens health compromised individuals for ridicule. Nassau County, the bedroom community just east of New York City with nearly 1.4 million residents, last week officially banned wearing face coverings in public in what's believed to be the nation's first such prohibition. THE COIN, by Yasmin ZaherHalfway through Yasmin Zaher’s debut novel, “The Coin,” the unnamed narrator, a Palestinian schoolteacher in New York City, arrives at the Hermès flagship store on Paris’s Rue Saint-Honoré to buy a Birkin. “Every year, regardless of poverty, war or famine, the price of the Birkin bag increases,” she explains. (He, in turn, left her millions of dollars that she cannot access except by allowance from her patronizing older brother.) Or with her own rootlessness, her parentless exile from a place in which her family had already been exiled for generations? Zaher’s smart, sneering novel of capital and its consequences answers: Everything.

Fishback sued his old firm for defamation in October, which is now in arbitration, according to a person familiar with the case. Thursday, Fishback said he was invited to debate Tesla with his old boss, saying Einhorn didn't understand Musk's company's "core value driver" of autonomy.

Alas, they’ve come a little too close to that with “The Regime,” a political satire that’s weird but not very good, other than savoring Winslet’s over-the-top antics as an autocratic leader. Donald Trump is a "loser," President Joe Biden now repeatedly says of his likely 2024 general election opponent. And of course Trump should want to debate him, Biden said, since he's "got nothing else to do." How damaging are all the renewed questions about age and mental acuity going to be? One Democratic member of the House responded to being told of the questions about age and memory raised in the report with a morbid laugh and sullen shake of the head. Inside the White House and among Biden’s reelection campaign staff, the tension is constant. Biden aides also feel themselves that this hasn’t been enough. Most importantly, they reflect what Biden aides have learned from experience: Nothing combats questions about the president’s competence as much as people seeing him in action.

To collect vintage clothes is to know that one day, you’ll come across a shirt that will send you into an existential spiral. For me, that moment came last month, as I was tooling around eBay in search of aged band tees. The very same Green Day “American Idiot” shirt that I bought new as a sneering tween was now being sold as “vintage” for a not insignificant sum of $100. To see your childhood resold as vintage—could anything make you feel older than that? Mind you, I’m just 32.

Although “The Buccaneers” comes with the literary pedigree of being based on Edith Wharton’s last, unfinished novel, the series so desperately wants to emulate “Bridgerton” that it almost makes your teeth ache, down to the mix of corsets and contemporary music. The result is a mildly watchable Apple TV+ series that proves, to quote Fred Allen, imitation is the sincerest form of streaming, too. Even so, everything feels a little too familiar, including the series’ hissable villain, hidden beneath a polished and presentable veneer. Consumed entirely on its terms, “The Buccaneers” works reasonably well as a soapy distraction for those willing to check their brains at the ballroom door. “The Buccaneers” premieres November 8 on Apple TV+.

Dear listeners,On Wednesday night, I was one of approximately 600 sardines crammed into Manhattan’s Bowery Ballroom for a very special concert. We were packed so tightly, I couldn’t move an inch; even clapping felt like a precarious use of my elbows. Did I mention it is August, in New York, and the humidity has been hovering around 75 percent for days? Because we were there, in an impossibly small club, seeing the rock legends the Pretenders. Actor Paul Reubens arrives as a guest for Comedy Central television's South Park The Tenth Season party in Los Angeles September 21, 2006. Actor Paul Reubens, who came to fame in the 1980s as children's TV star Pee-wee Herman, has died years after a cancer diagnosis, his team said Monday. Reubens rocketed to fame for creating the sarcastic but good-natured man-child Pee-wee Herman, a character whose red bowtie and sneering catch phrases — "I know you are, but what am I?" That eventually led to Reubens' big break, the 1985 movie "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," helmed by first-time feature film director Tim Burton. The success of "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" led to Reubens landing a Saturday morning CBS show, "Pee-wee's Playhouse."

Throw in clever cameos and this Apple TV+ movie delivers on its promise of unpretentious fun. ‘Experts’ Are Fueling Distrust in Vaccines
  + stars: | 2023-01-09 | by ( Allysia Finley | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Nearly half of Americans believe Covid vaccines have probably caused a significant number of unexplained deaths, according to a Rasmussen Reports survey last week. In December, Rasmussen reported that a near equal proportion worry that Covid vaccines may have major side effects (57%) as believe they are effective (56%). People can hold both views at the same time. But the self-professed expert class and many who call themselves journalists dismiss anyone who questions their Covid vaccine orthodoxy as an “anti-vaxxer”—a label as sneering as “climate denier.”
Ronald Reagan was 77 when he left the White House, but President Joe Biden, who turns 80 on Nov. 20, would be 86 by the time a second four-year term ends, should he win it. About a quarter of Republicans, 26%, think Trump may not be up for 2024 because of his age. Political affiliation aside, 68% of people surveyed think Biden may not be up for the challenge two years from now, and 49% say the same about Trump. Some 86% of Americans said they believe the cutoff for serving as president should be age 75 or younger, the poll found. Some Biden supporters said they admired Democrats' success under Biden, but were still uncertain about a possible next term.
