A dissident group has won control of the Amazon Labor Union, the only union in the country that formally represents Amazon warehouse workers, election results on Tuesday showed. The union won a representation vote at a Staten Island warehouse in 2022 but has yet to negotiate a contract as Amazon contests the outcome. A leader of the dissident group, Connor Spence, will take over, succeeding the founding president, Christian Smalls, who chose not to run for re-election. The result was announced by Mr. Spence’s group and confirmed by Mr. Smalls. Mr. Spence’s group brought a lawsuit last year to force leadership elections within the union.

Senator Bernie Sanders, an Independent from Vermont, left, speaks next to Christian Smalls, founder of the Amazon Labor Union (ALU), during an ALU rally in the Staten Island borough of New York, U.S., on Sunday, April 24, 2022. Members of the Amazon Labor Union, the first group of company workers to organize at a U.S. warehouse, have voted to affiliate with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the groups said in a joint statement on Tuesday. Roughly 98% of ALU members voted in favor of joining up with the Teamsters, the groups said. The Teamsters is one of the largest labor unions in the U.S., and it has long sought to organize Amazon delivery and warehouse workers. The union launched an Amazon division in 2021 to support and fund workers at the company in their unionization efforts.

Amazon workers arrive with paperwork to unionize at the National Labor Relations Board office in Brooklyn, New York, Oct. 25, 2021. The Amazon Labor Union, the first group of company workers to organize at a U.S. warehouse, said Tuesday that it's taken steps to affiliate with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. The ALU originally eschewed major labor unions, establishing itself instead as an independent organization. Aligning with the Teamsters, one of the largest labor unions in the U.S., could give the ALU additional heft to jumpstart negotiations with Amazon. In March, ALU members voted to hold an election for new union officers.

When he moved his art to the city’s streets in the 1980s, it was largely unwelcome — and he was even arrested a few times. “It was just seen as vandalism.”These days, the canvases come to Mr. Phethean, better known as the muralist Mr Cenz. Schele Williams first saw “The Wiz” when a tour of the original Broadway production came through Dayton, Ohio. She even used the show’s soaring finale, “Home,” as one of her audition songs. Now, after working on Broadway as an actor (“Aida”) and an associate director (“Motown”), she is directing the first Broadway revival of “The Wiz” in almost 40 years. It’s a chance, Williams said, to celebrate what “The Wiz” has meant to her and to pass the story along to her daughters. Since becoming a Broadway hit in 1975, “The Wiz,” a gospel, soul and R&B take on Dorothy’s adventures in Oz, largely composed by Charlie Smalls, with a book by William F. Brown, has been a vibrant cornerstone of Black culture.

The Sudden Death of a Model Magnate
  + stars: | 2023-11-02 | by ( Guy Trebay | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Not without reason has modeling been termed the ugly business of being beautiful. Opaque, barely regulated and often cutthroat, it is seldom viewed as an incubator of big-hearted altruists. Instrumental over his 30-year career in finding and then shaping the careers of some of the most stellar names in the business — among them, Gisele Bündchen, Liya Kebede, Carolyn Murphy, Gigi Hadid, Stephanie Seymour, Tyra Banks, Kate Upton and Joan Smalls — he was also an early champion of diversity and inclusion and a canny marketer with a gift for anticipating shifts in the overall cultural mood. When Mr. Bart went to IMG after a previous job heading Ford Models, “people still thought of models as having a use-by date,” said James Scully, a retired casting agent and himself a noted star-maker. “It was, ‘You had your moment, and now there’s a new car in town.’”Mr. Bart, by contrast, took a long view of the talents he helped foster and had a singular ability to recalibrate a model’s trajectory, often more than once over the course of their career.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Southern California street gang leader charged in the fatal shooting of Tupac Shakur in 1996 in Las Vegas will make a court appearance Thursday with a lawyer from one of the city's best-known political families, one that has represented mobsters, athletes and other famous clients. Attorney Ross Goodman told The Associated Press Wednesday he'll appear in Duane “Keffe D” Davis' defense against accusations that Davis orchestrated the drive-by killing of the rap music icon. Davis won't immediately enter a plea, Goodman said, he'll seek another two weeks to confirm that he'll be hired for Davis' case. Goodman is a son of former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman and current Mayor Carolyn Goodman. In July, a police raid at Davis' home drew renewed interest to Shakur's unsolved murder, one of hip-hop music’s enduring mysteries.

In January, a federal district court in South Carolina found that Mace's district had been unconstitutionally racially gerrymandered. Republican state lawmakers appealed that ruling, kicking the final decision up the conservative-dominated Supreme Court, where oral arguments were heard on Wednesday. "I think [voters] look at Nancy Mace and believe that she is probably more motivated to get on national TV and create headlines for herself than to actually work for the people," said Moore.
