The good store is clean — the floors are swept, aisles open, merchandise in its place. They've walked into a local dollar store or pharmacy or department store and wondered whether there's been an explosion. Stuff spilling into aisles used to be a somewhat isolated problem, the sign of a particularly poorly run store. Gone are the days when supercheap labor made adequate levels of store staffing easy, though I will note that Robyn makes just over $9 an hour and Stephanie about $15.50. Why the dinner party is a declining art

CNN —Until a few months ago, the thought of hosting a dinner party filled me with dread. Over the next several decades, women entered the workforce at a rapid pace, leading to the decline of the formal dinner party, Julier says. Illustration by Leah Abucayan/CNN/Adobe StockToday, by several accounts, the dinner party is all but dead. A dinner party, whether you’re attending or throwing it, requires you to be “on” and fully engaged for a sustained length of time. Roberts’ account reminded me of the role that the dinner party played in my own upbringing.

Morgan Stanley said Black Friday traffic provided further evidence that some retail names are outperforming their peers. Equity analyst Alex Straton said Black Friday proved to be a "powerful demand catalyst" as shoppers searched for the best deals online and in store. However, the analyst does have an idea of what stocks are currently on the top performers list from the softline retail cohort. Straton called Lululemon the "clear winner" within sportswear. Investors should be discerning when thinking about these retail winners and losers as stock plays.

Samsung Electronics on Wednesday announced changes in the leadership of its memory and foundry chip divisions, as the company faces intense competition in the semiconductor space. The South Korean tech giant appointed Jun Young-hyun as co-CEO and head of the memory chip arm, while Han Jin-man will become the president and head of the company's foundry business. Samsung Electronics was once the leading force in the memory chip sector, and appeared well-positioned to take advantage of the boom in artificial intelligence. Last month, Jun, who has been overseeing the semiconductor division since May, issued a rare apology after the company posted disappointing third-quarter profit guidance. Samsung's chip business posted a sharply lower third-quarter profit compared to the previous quarter.

The U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who built a powerful Islamic movement in Turkey and beyond but spent his later years mired in accusations of orchestrating an attempted coup against Turkish leader Reccep Tayyip Erdogan, has died. Since the failed coup, his movement has been systematically dismantled in Turkey and its influence has declined internationally. Soon after the 2016 coup, Erdogan described Gulen’s network as traitors and “like a cancer”, vowing to root them out wherever they are. Bitcoin that's lost either when an investor dies or is simply locked out of their wallet reduces available supply. Estate planning is crucial for bitcoin investors who store the coin on a cold wallet, experts say. Satoshi Nakamoto being deceased would potentially soothe a big fear that's loomed over the bitcoin market for years, which is that the person could sell their estimated 1 million bitcoin. If no one has your private key, the funds will be locked permanently," Wealthica CEO Eric Lemieux told Business Insider. Otherwise, more lost bitcoin could mean even higher prices for the crypto.

As Donald Trump calls for overhauling the Affordable Care Act with a new health care system, one Republican senator running for an influential leadership position says the party should combine that pursuit with a major tax bill in the new year. “We’ll have an opportunity next year, when it comes time to extend the Trump tax cuts, to adopt new policies that again will make health care more affordable and more personalized,” Cotton said. “Because a lot of health care in this country does go through our tax code. “Because the Democrats have become so obstructionist on President Trump, the opportunity to pass major legislation next year will probably be centered on the extension of the Trump tax cuts from 2017 in addition to other measures,” Cotton said. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., who sits on the Finance Committee that oversees tax and health care policy, said Congress will scrutinize Trump’s litany of expensive proposals in a tax bill.

Canada already imposes 6.1% tariff on EVs manufactured in China and imported into Canada, the government said on Monday. The country will also put a 25% tariff on China-made steel and aluminum imports, effective Oct. 15. China is the third-largest country for steel imports into Canada, according to the Canadian Steel Producers Association. Canada's EV, steel and aluminum industries face "unfair competition" and trade practices from China, the government's finance department said.
