michelle goldbergI mean, I’m a huge Walz fan, and I was worried. ross douthatSo, yeah, I mean, I’m having made the case that this pick makes sense in vibes terms. michelle goldbergYeah, I don’t think that he necessarily overperforms among conservative voters strictly defined. You don’t think that there’s a part of the country that just finds joy like a really refreshing change? I’m going there.

Patrick Healy: Kamala Harris will announce her running mate very soon. Michelle Goldberg: Like a lot of progressives, I barely knew who Tim Walz was two weeks ago. Now I love him, even though I worry that his normal Midwestern guy affect is starting to border on shtick. Goldberg: He reads like an all-American heartland normie — a hunter and former high school football coach — who can articulate progressive priorities in a plain-spoken, unapologetic way. And branding Republicans “weird” was a stroke of genius, capturing the large part of the Venn diagram where sinister authoritarianism and ridiculous online subcultural tics overlap.

Stream These 6 Great Bob Newhart Performances
  + stars: | 2024-07-18 | by ( Noel Murray | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
The legend of Bob Newhart, who died on Thursday at 94, holds that he was once just an ordinary Chicago accountant who honed a stand-up act in his spare time. Overnight, the story goes — almost accidentally — he became a Grammy-winning sensation with his debut album, “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart,” a collection of one-man sketches in which he play-acts one half of funny conversations. Newhart worked in advertising for longer than he did in accounting; and his showbiz ambitions were never just an afterthought. He then played variations on his stand-up character in two hit sitcoms: “The Bob Newhart Show” through much of the ’70s and “Newhart,” which ran from 1982 to 1990. In doing his bits about ordinary schmoes in extraordinary situations — such as crossing paths with King Kong or consulting with Abe Lincoln — Newhart spoofs the language of American life.

That’s a problem for Big Beer, which is dealing with flat sales, declining volume and a fickle generation of younger drinkers who are completely ditching the bottle or preferring anything but a regular beer. It’s a non-carbonated drink because “bloating that may come from carbonation is considered a top barrier” for younger drinkers and the trend of “decarbonizing” drinks is blowing up on the app. Last year, it acquired Blue Run Spirits, a cult favorite high-end bourbon and rye whiskey brand, in light of US spirit sales surpassing beer sales. Its aptly titled “Beyond Beer” category is currently a $1.5 billion part of its global business and is helping attract younger, legally aged drinkers. Despite younger drinkers’ hesitance with buying beer and flat sales, Big Beer companies aren’t facing an existential threat.

And they were everywhere, although, naturally, New York City was a magnet, as it has always been for L.G.B.T.Q.+ people looking for a place in which they can be themselves. New York City was where you lost your soul, and we wanted to be closer to the earth. I wore an eight-and-a-half-foot-tall Statue of Liberty costume to the Easter Parade in New York City, and Kirsten came along with me. By the time I turned 30, I’d been telling people I was older for years, because I’m not the type to bemoan the loss of my youth. Going to New York felt like this moment of emerging to a wider audience, and then I started to travel a lot.

Why Is This Seder Unlike All Other Seders?

Why was this Seder different from all other Seders? Start with the setup: a glittering table set for 100, running the length of a drafty warehouse in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. Also unlike most seders, this one, on Thursday night (before the start of the holiday), featured a D.J. Guests at the Seder and past parties have included Brett Gelman, the actor; Samantha Ronson, the D.J. ; Richard Kind, the actor; Chi Ossé, the Brooklyn city councilman; and the actor David Schwimmer.

Read previewRussian President Vladimir Putin issued a new nuclear threat this week, threatening the West over its support for Ukraine in his most explicit intimidation tactic yet. Russia's President Vladimir Putin gives an interview with US talk show host Tucker Carlson at the Kremlin in Moscow on February 6, 2024. "American politicians are already responding to this war in a way that helps Russia," Schmidt said. But Putin may ultimately have the more resonant message when it comes to American voters, Schmidt said. "It's far more complicated to explain why Ukraine is important to US voters than it is for Putin to threaten nuclear war," he told BI.

Post-earnings moves are top of mind for Morgan Stanley, which noted that they've been subdued throughout 2023. The Republican Party has always leaned on culture war issues to win elections, but for the last three years, since Joe Biden won office in 2020, an aggressive and virulent form of culture war demagoguery has been at the center of Republican political strategy. To be fair to Republican strategists, there was a moment, in the fall of 2021, when it looked like the plan was working. Youngkin shot to national prominence and Republicans made immediate plans to take the strategy to every competitive race in the country. In 2022, with “parental rights” as their rallying cry, Republican lawmakers unleashed a barrage of legislation targeting transgender rights, and Republican candidates ran explicit campaigns against transgender and other gender nonconforming people. “They kicked God out of schools and welcomed the drag queens,” said Kari Lake, an Arizona Republican, during her 2022 campaign for governor.

‘Old Dads’: Bill Burr’s Bitter Comedy of Fatherhood

Bokeem Woodbine, Bill Burr and Katie Aselton Photo: NETFLIXThe shtick of stand-up legend Bill Burr is the comedy of the oppressed—the oppressed in question being middle-aged males in a foreign land, i.e. the 2020s, where they can’t say what they want, smoke where they want, win an argument with a woman or lay claim to the victimhood that seems to give everyone else the upper hand. The Burr persona is angry, ironic and, quite often, hilarious. If you find him offensive, it might be because he’s making fun of you. And you might be him.

Welcome to Opinion’s commentary for the first Republican presidential primary candidate debate, held in Milwaukee on Wednesday night. Gail Collins: She seemed generally reasonable and wow, when the debate turned to education and she actually brought up reading. If there’s any life left in the old G.O.P., Haley gave it hope. I covered Donald Trump’s political ascent more than a decade before most other journalists did, which is another way of saying that I covered Silvio Berlusconi. That was from 2002 to 2004, during the second of his four stints as prime minister of Italy. He was arguably at the peak of his power. I was then The Times’s Rome bureau chief, and I twice met at length with Berlusconi. How well would his shtick play in another country, one with greater weight in the world and more at stake?

But my enjoyment of his newfound Resistance shtick doesn’t bode well for Christie. The people he needs to win over are not liberal New York Times columnists, but voters who hate liberal New York Times columnists. The trick, for a Republican, is going to be painting Trump as a weak loser who will sabotage right-wing priorities. At times Christie tried to do this, as when he criticized Trump for his failure to build the border wall and repeal the Affordable Care Act. presidential nomination, would he be willing to accept the role of the presidential candidate of a 2024 center-right independent party?” Steinberg wrote in April.

If Republicans are serious about dislodging Mr. Trump, this race needs a jolt. Chris Christie, the former governor of New Jersey, has been making noises as if he wants to be that guy. In a recent interview with Politico, he vowed that if he runs, he will tackle Mr. Trump’s weaknesses head-on, from the character troubles to the record of losing. In 2016, no Republicans went hard at Mr. Trump because no one took him seriously. This race needs a brawler in the mix — if not Mr. Christie, then someone else with that inclination.

Lewis Black, ‘Tragically, I Need You’(YouTube)If a stand-up can tap into or channel the fury of an audience, he can light up a room. Lewis Black’s great gift is that behind that dyspeptic front, you could detect a thoughtful, introspective side, a little damaged perhaps. He shows us more of that vulnerable side here, in part because the isolation of the pandemic put him in a reflective mood. Along with swinging sharp political elbows, in defense of Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, say, Black beats himself up over past relationships and sings the praises of companionship. He talks about his failed career as a playwright, bringing up theater because “I like to feel the interest of the audience leave the room.”
Raymond J. Johnson Jr. was a wiseguy, dressed in a zoot suit and a wide-brimmed fedora and waving a cigar in his right hand. “Ohhhh, you doesn’t have to call me Johnson,” he would say. Jr.“But you doesn’t have to call me Johnson.”And you can call his creator Bill Saluga. Mr. Saluga also played Johnson on various television series; on a disco record (“Dancin’ Johnson”); and, most memorably, in commercials for Anheuser-Busch’s Natural Light beer. In 1979, at the peak of Mr. Saluga’s fame as a comedic one-hit wonder, Tom Shales of The Washington Post wrote that “now everybody and his brother are doing Saluga impressions throughout this very impressionable land of ours.”

Each Wednesday night my husband and I tune in to watch “Ted Lasso,” the Emmy award-winning Apple TV+ comedy series. They climb into an impossibly small car, and Ted calls out to Rebecca, his serious, conniving new boss, “Look! Holy fools dwell in ordinary, secular life, but they approach it with completely different values. Rejecting respectability and embracing humility and love, holy fools are so profoundly out of step with the broader world that they appear to be ridiculous or even insane and often invite ridicule. Early in the series, Ted tells a reporter named Trent Crimm: “For me, success is not about the wins and losses.
