Were Trump to follow through on his vow to impose tariffs on imports on Europe as well as from China, they would likely deviate further. There is also uncertainty across the continent about what the new White House will mean for the war in Ukraine. In their view, China could help to pressure Russia over Ukraine as Xi loses patience with a war he did not expect would drag on for almost three years. One senior European diplomat said that while China has never explicitly condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it has helped in other ways to rein in Moscow. continues to say that Ukraine will negotiate when Ukraine wants to negotiate,” another European official said, “and that the E.U.

China's President Xi Jinping (L) and Peru's President Dina Boluarte shake hands during a meeting at the government palace in Lima on November 14, 2024, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. Beijing is strengthening economic ties in Latin America as it seeks to further bolster trade and gain influence in the resource-rich region, experts told CNBC. "The completion of Chancay Port will effectively consolidate Peru's role as a gateway linking shipping routes across land and sea, and between Asia and Latin America," the spokesperson said Friday. Experts say that the port cements China's growing position as a top trade partner of Peru and the rest of Latin America, as it supplants the U.S. in its own backyard. "The port of Chancay is seen as a game changer in the logistics of Latin America," Juan Carlos Ladines Azalia, professor of international affairs and international trade management at Peru's Universidad del Pacífico, told CNBC.

The national flags of the United States and China flutter at the Fairmont Peace Hotel on April 25, 2024 in Shanghai, China. China is willing to be partners and friends with the United States, China's ambassador to Washington said, seeking to strengthen dialogue between the world's two largest economies. China has no plan to surpass or replace the United States, Xie Feng said in a speech in Hong Kong on Friday, addressing Chinese officials and the U.S. ambassador to China. Chinese President Xi Jinping called on Friday for rejecting unilateralism and protectionism in favour of economic globalisation. However, some analysts say China's pitch as a counterbalance to a Trump-led United States has lost its shine compared to 2016, when Trump was first elected.

HONG KONG — Businesses and consumers in China found the annual Singles’ Day shopping festival less attractive this year due to a sluggish economy, forcing e-commerce firms to look abroad for growth. While Singles’ Day was previously a one-day event, shopping platforms in China now kickstart the festival weeks ahead to drum up sales volume. But amid China’s lagging domestic economy, dragged down by a real estate crisis and deflationary pressures, consumers no longer go all out during the shopping extravaganza. Wang said that the prices offered on e-commerce platforms during Singles’ Day are not necessarily cheaper than usual. “I used to buy a lot two or three years ago and I even purchased a mobile phone (during Singles’ Day),” he said.

A growing group of Chinese travelers are now turning to extreme forms of transportation for their vacations. They call themselves “iron butt” travelers – inspired by the amount of time they spend traveling on uncomfortable seats that make flesh start to feel like metal.
