His daughter said in July that he was planning to run for Peru’s presidency for the fourth time in 2026. The former university president and mathematics professor was the consummate political outsider when he emerged from obscurity to win Peru’s 1990 election over writer Mario Vargas Llosa. He had hoped to run for Peru’s presidency in 2006, but instead wound up in court facing charges of abuse of power. He became the first former president in the world to be tried and convicted in his own country for human rights violations. “After a long battle with cancer, our father, Alberto Fujimori, has just departed to meet the Lord,” she said on X Wednesday.

Read previewAs a young queer woman in my 20s, I found it exhilarating to march down Fifth Avenue in New York City's Pride celebrations, joining the drumming, shouting, balloons, feathers, and sequins. But my feelings toward Pride celebrations shifted when I considered bringing my two small kids. AdvertisementI wondered: What would Pride mean to our young daughters, then ages 9 and 4? It's also important, especially to our queer family. Many of our queer friends with kids have celebrated pride for years and recommended a smaller, family-friendly Pride celebration, so we decided to join the throng in Jackson Heights, Queens.

RAMALLAH, West Bank, Nov 24 (Reuters) - Israel will on Friday release 39 Palestinians prisoners, among them 24 women and 15 teenaged males, in the occupied West Bank in exchange for 13 hostages due to be freed from the Gaza Strip by Hamas, a Palestinian official said. The inmates, all of them from the occupied West Bank or Jerusalem, will be handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross at Israel's Ofer military jail around 4 p.m. (1400 GMT), said Qadura Fares, Palestinian commissioner for prisoners. That would coincide with the planned handover at the Gaza-Egypt border of 13 women and children who were among some 240 people taken hostage by Hamas gunmen during a deadly Oct. 7 rampage in southern Israel. "After the Red Cross receives the (Palestinian) prisoners, the ones from Jerusalem will go to Jerusalem and the ones from the West Bank will gather in Betunia municipal council where their families will be waiting,” Fares told Reuters. Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., September 26, 2023. A four-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas appeared to be holding shakily on Friday with no major reports of attacks, although both sides were accused of violations. The decline marked yet another investor shrug at reports of further official moves to shore up China's ailing property sector. In Europe, data showed Germany's economy shrank slightly in the third quarter, confirming an initial estimate of a 0.1% fall. In the opening set of her third-round match against Elise Mertens on Friday, Coco Gauff looked fallible, frustrated and like she would be finished early, nothing like she had earlier this week at the U.S. Open. Mertens, a 27-year-old Belgian, was playing loosely and aggressively, while Gauff, the 19-year-old American superstar, made error after error on just about every stroke. It was suddenly easy to imagine Gauff’s run at the U.S. Open coming to an end on this cool New York evening. Instead, Gauff turned it on and turned the emotional tables on Mertens. Gauff won the third set cleanly, 6-0.

A clip of a gorilla sculpture in a town in France is circulating online with the false claim that it shows an animal let loose from a zoo during riots which took place in France in late June and early July. The shakily filmed video captured in low light shows what appears to be a gorilla perched atop a building. According to the blog, the sculpture is in the Valensolles district, Valence, France. Reuters traced the sculpture to a building in Valence, where the corner of the building similarly matches street view(bit.ly/44tKQaR). The clip shows a sculpture of a gorilla in Valence, France, and not an animal let loose during riots in France.
