Advertisement"My small business is failing," is how they often begin. AdvertisementIt also comes "as more small business owners are embracing radical transparency" on TikTok, Rivero added. "Order, order, order, order," she said.

While the motive behind Thompson's murder remains unknown, the internet treated it as an occasion for ghoulish schadenfreude. What's striking, however, is how the backlash revealed the depth of the bitterness toward health insurers. AdvertisementIn one exchange, a hospital executive acknowledged that many Americans are fed up with health insurers. One day after Thompson's murder, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield announced that it was rescinding a controversial plan to limit coverage for anesthesia. An Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield spokesperson told Business Insider, "It never was and never will be the policy of Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield to not pay for medically necessary anesthesia services.

The world’s most popular podcaster has, sort of, but not really, thrown his support to one of the 2024 presidential race’s least popular candidates. On Thursday, Joe Rogan said he preferred Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is running as an independent, for president. His remarks about Mr. Kennedy, uttered on a show with a far smaller reach than his own, nonetheless set off a frenzied response. Supporters of former President Donald J. Trump, worried that Mr. Rogan’s stance could carve off voters and hurt his electoral chances come November, quickly turned on the podcaster, standup comic and U.F.C. They questioned his intelligence and even mocked his height, a spectacle that was greeted with something akin to joy — or, at least, schadenfreude — among Democrats who have long written off Mr. Rogan as helpful to their cause.

Donald Trump is on a winning streak, which is all the more remarkable because he's barely played the game. He's in the strongest position any Republican presidential hopeful has been in July since George W. Bush in 2000. AdvertisementSince the debate, Biden has faced almost daily onslaught of Democrats calling him to step aside. Even as he's refrained from rallies, he's still ranting on social media. Trump also handed Biden's campaign a major gift by offering one of his signature "I don't know them" denials about Project 2025.

Opinion | Oops, Justin Timberlake Did It Again

Poor Justin Timberlake … are not three words I could have imagined typing 25, or 15 or even five years ago. Sprinkling salt on the wound, Page Six reported that the arresting officer didn’t know who the perp was. Streams of Britney Spears’ song “Criminal” spiked. The misery of celebrities always occasions a fire hose of schadenfreude, but this seems next level. Where, I found myself wondering as I scrolled and LOL’ed, are the fans rallying to his defense?

And as China woke up Friday to the news of Trump’s conviction on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, the country’s heavily censored social media lit up. Under leader Xi Jinping, China’s most assertive leader in decades, the country’s social media platforms have become increasingly dominated by anti-American, nationalistic voices. Second, can he still run for president?”But analysts say Trump’s conviction could be a tricky topic for Chinese state propagandists to navigate. So far, Chinese state media outlets have yet to publish the kind of blistering commentaries that previously appeared alongside news coverage of Trump’s legal entanglements. Alfred Wu, an associate professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, said China’s state media is unlikely to play up the coverage in the days ahead.

None of them are nearly as long as her most recent video, “The Spectacular Failure of the Star Wars Hotel.”Over the course of 20 video chapters, Nicholson details her 2022 stay at the “Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser” hotel in Orlando, Florida. The tale is likely familiar to Disney and Star Wars fans, many of whom heard about the high-dollar, high-concept hotel and its closure in 2023. The big draw of the hotel lay in what Disney marketing called an “immersive, customizable Star Wars experience” that Nicholson equated to LARPing, or live-action roleplaying. “I couldn’t care less about some dumb Star Wars hotel, but give me those 4 hours,” one X user said.

One helpful way to think about the recent gold rally: it's a case of schadenfreude. The yellow metal does well when other assets — and the world — are in trouble. She died of lung cancer in 1978 never having spoken to Capote again. In the fall of 1955, Mrs. Woodward shot and killed her husband at their estate in Oyster Bay, in the middle of the night, believing that he was a burglar. Capote decided it was not, even though someone eventually pleaded guilty to trying to rob the Woodward house on the night of the shooting. In mid-October, just as Capote’s story was set to drop, Mrs. Woodward killed herself in her uptown apartment. While she had had a difficult life and there was no way to know why she did it, many speculated about the correlation.

The turmoil at Ibram X. Kendi’s Center for Antiracist Research at Boston University, which recently laid off more than half its staff, has been a schadenfreude bonanza for the right. Three years later, there are considerable questions about what’s been accomplished with all that money. Conservatives who see Kendi as the living embodiment of the style of social justice activism they deride as “wokeness” are, naturally, gleeful. It’s almost hard to blame right-wingers for their delight; Kendi’s mistakes played right into their hands. It exemplifies the lamentable tendency among left-leaning donors to chase fads and celebrities rather than build sustainable institutions.

New York CNN —Burning Man, the desert confab that descended into chaos over the weekend, isn’t quite the scrappy, free-spirited revelry that it once was. For many watching the disarray of Burning Man from afar, the rain and mud that left 70,000 people stranded quickly became a symbol of the festival’s departure from its roots. Or, more simply: how the billionaires ruined Burning Man. Going to Burning Man is, in some elite circles, akin to having climbed Everest or taken ayahuasca on a meditation retreat — a spiritually transformative experience, undertaken with a considerable safety net of privilege. “Burning Man is the perfect example of how many rich White people recreationally manufacture hardship because they are immune from it systematically,” wrote one user on X, formerly Twitter, this weekend.

Known as a “play signal,” mammalian laughter accompanies playful interactions to signal harmless intentions and keep the play going. And laughter is an essential feature of human social interactions. For humans, laughter has expanded from its original function as a play signal to serve a variety of social functions. I suspect people borrow and transform the play signal of laughter to influence situations that, on their face, have nothing to do with play. All laughter serves genuine social functions, helping you navigate complex social interactions.

Mark Zuckerberg bills Threads as a space for kindness — but he's not above using it to ding Elon Musk. Threads arrives as Twitter has another disastrous week. As the Meta chief put it on the new Threads app, the vision is "to create an open and friendly public space for conversation" for 1 billion-plus people.
