In 1910, Puccini was in New York to supervise the opening night of his opera “La Fanciulla del West,” the Met’s very first world premiere. With the tenor Enrico Caruso and the soprano Emmy Destinn, household names in their day, in the leading roles, “Fanciulla” was a runaway hit. Now, more than 100 years later, with a severe lack of music education in our schools and competition from an ever-expanding array of streaming entertainment options, opera faces its greatest existential challenge. We are fighting to survive economically (our European colleagues are better off with substantial government funding), regain our artistic footing and secure new audiences and donors. This is particularly difficult to accomplish because for decades there has been resistance to substantial artistic change from administrators, academics and critics.

Thousands of Oasis tickets on the secondary market will reportedly be relisted on Ticketmaster at face value, according to the BBC. Oasis, Ticketmaster and SJM Concerts did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Oasis had announced that tickets for the Oasis '25 Live tour could only be resold at face value using Ticketmaster or the ticket resale marketplace Twickets. The demand for Oasis tickets has been high since the band, which features brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher, has not performed together in 15 years following a lengthy feud between the Gallaghers. Since then, Oasis has been taking steps to get tickets in the hands of loyal fans and away from scalpers.

Oasis is canceling around 50,000 tickets for its British tour dates that were resold on secondary websites like StubHub and Viagogo. The band’s tour promoters are canceling tickets resold through unofficial secondary sites to stop price gouging, a spokesperson for Live Nation and SJM, the Oasis tour promoters, told CNN. CNN saw ticket prices as high as $7,294 for the Oasis tour on Viagogo, a secondary market for ticket sales. Canceled tickets will be made available for face value on Ticketmaster, which is owned by Live Nation and considered the designated site for Oasis tickets. The North American leg of the Oasis tour begins on August 24, 2025, at Rogers Stadium in Toronto, Ontario.

Authorities in India have summoned executives of a ticketing platform after furious Coldplay fans failed to secure tickets for the British rock band’s upcoming concerts in Mumbai and complained of unchecked scalping. Many of them are directing their anger at the platforms selling tickets — and calling on officials to take action. On Monday, the website Viagogo showed the lowest-tier tickets available for $1,500 and the highest-tier tickets for as much as $4,000. A third show for Jan. 21 was added the day tickets went on sale due to “unprecedented demand,” BookMyShow said. “These websites are selling tickets for 20, 30, 40 times more,” she said.

New Delhi CNN —Fans eagerly awaiting the return of Coldplay to India were shocked to find tickets being resold online for as much as $11,000, prompting police to seek a statement from the CEO of the shows’ vendor over allegations of fraud. Tickets were scheduled to go on sale by the official vendor, BookMyShow (BMS), at 12 p.m. local time on September 22. Amit Vyas, a lawyer and founding partner of Mumbai law firm Vertices Partners, was among fans waiting for tickets on the vendor’s website when he was suddenly locked out. The complaint was in connection with the alleged sale of fake tickets for concerts on certain platforms, according to CNN affiliate News18. Coldplay fans told CNN their attempts to buy tickets to January’s shows at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai left them frustrated and disappointed.

Shortly after announcing North American tour dates, the band said it will not be participating in dynamic pricing. Dynamic pricing occurs when a ticket seller adjusts the cost of a ticket in real time based on live demand. The band's announcement comes after the U.K. government scrutinized Ticketmaster and its dynamic pricing model in relation to the sale of Oasis concert tickets. Some music fans feel that fandom and devotion should be considered when granting ticket sale access. Oasis said in a news release that it plans to take the tour to "other continents outside of Europe and North America later next year."

The fee could be a sign the Cybertruck might be a smaller release than expected, experts said. AdvertisementTesla's rescinded $50,000 resale fee is the latest sign the Cybertruck won't hit the market in large numbers anytime soon. These restrictions are rare, but they're most commonly used on limited-production vehicles, Stephen Beck, founder and managing partner of consultancy cg42, told Business Insider. "It's really hard to say how many people on the reservation list will actually buy it," Moody told Business Insider. "There will be just as many people who want to work the system to make money as people who want to own this vehicle," Moody said.

More artists got back on the road in 2022, yet still hit pandemic-related snags. Bruce Springsteen, Metallica, Drake, Travis Scott, Ed Sheeran, Morgan Wallen, Maluma and Madonna filled arenas and stadiums. Buying concert tickets, however, has become an increasingly complex and expensive endeavor as costs continue to rise and companies like Ticketmaster and SeatGeek battle bots and scalpers. Fans hoping to attend the year’s hottest tours endured a maze of presale registrations, digital waiting rooms and hourslong queues. Those fortunate enough to reach checkout were met with lofty ticket prices — some because of confusing “dynamic pricing” — and additional fees.

On several occasions, I would walk into Macy's and buy a tube of lipstick, which was something I found comforting. Considering that every lipstick I own, which is not a small number, is basically the same color, I also found that strange. It was the restaurant where we first witnessed a frozen torchon of foie gras being shaved to make a mountain of salty pink snow. These technology failures during a major scaling event — dubbed success disasters — weren't alone. Ticketmaster's failure during their scaling event was just one kind of success disaster — the overburdening of the system's capacity. Success disasters may be common, but that doesn't make them acceptable, especially if a company is offering products or services considered essential. The right answer really depends on the starting point and what scaling events are anticipated. Even on a smaller (but still substantial) scale, Urban keeps this in mind to avoid her own success disaster.

But Swift has also made each show a news event by adding two “surprise songs,” often with headline-grabbing guests. Music critics have portrayed the Eras Tour as showing Swift at the top of her game as a media-savvy, big-tent talent, a pop star with a knack for grand spectacle as well as the polished artistry of a classic songwriter. Shania Twain, the country-pop star whose career in some ways prefigured Swift’s, caught the Las Vegas stop of the Eras Tour, a 44-plus song production that goes as long as three and a half hours. She praised Swift’s “beautiful balance” of high-tech stagecraft and intimate performance segments. (Swift’s representatives declined to comment for this article.)

When people, or their army of bots, buy those lower-priced tickets in order to resell them, they’re abusing that restraint, and reducing the availability of seats at more reasonable prices. But your sister didn’t buy these tickets to resell them. Looming in the future were the tickets I’d purchased to the Taylor Swift Eras tour, intended for my family members and the student. I refused, because if I did so, the student would still be sitting next to us at the concert. Sneaker bots can accelerate the checkout process, wait in a virtual line or even fill out billing information. Sneaker bots took off in 2012, when Nike released its Air Jordan Doernbecher 9 shoes on Twitter. According to Nike, bots can make up to 10% to 50% of entries depending on demand. "People are successfully able to still bot Nike SNKRS," said Nova. Watch the video to learn more about sneaker bots and how companies like Nike are handling them.

Another Twitter account called @ErasTourResell, which has 120,000 followers, has gained significant traction working with resellers who want to sell their tickets at face value. The trio of twenty-somethings aim to make Swift tickets as accessible to fans as possible without them overpaying or getting scammed. “So far we’ve posted somewhere between 2,700 and 3,000 tickets, all for face value,” the trio said in a DM conversation on Twitter. “It’s truly so rewarding seeing these tickets go to real fans for face value when the resale market has insane prices with people making three times the profit.
