Added sugar: How to cut out or lower your intake
  + stars: | 2024-10-28 | by ( Andrea Kane | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Consuming added sugar has become a part of life, woven into almost every meal. Americans 2 years and older consume on average 17 teaspoons of added sugar a day, according to the most recent government data available. Put sugary foods in their rightful placeSave sugary foods for desserts; don’t allow them to creep into every part of your diet. “This means enjoy the sugar that you do eat by baking together and savoring together, making the (added) sugar that you do eat part of celebrating life,” she said. Look for the line that shows you the “added sugar” content in a food to tally up the grams of excess sugar you consume in a day.

Jon-Adrian Velazquez spent close to 27 years caught in the criminal justice system — nearly all of it behind bars in New York's Sing Sing prison, convicted of a murder he insisted he did not commit. Andrew Cuomo granted Velazquez executive clemency, citing his work in Sing Sing on an educational initiative by those incarcerated to combat gun violence, and he was freed after serving almost 24 years of a 25-year-to-life sentence. The results determined Velazquez's DNA was not on the key evidence. Since his release from prison, Velazquez has used his experience to become an advocate for criminal legal reform and even played himself in the 2023 drama "Sing Sing," based on an actual Rehabilitation Through the Arts program at the prison. The podcast "Letters from Sing Sing" was a finalist for a 2024 Pulitzer Prize in audio reporting and Slepian's book about the case, "The Sing Sing Files: One Journalist, Six Innocent Men, and a Twenty-Year Fight for Justice," was released this month.

Can money buy happiness? It really depends

(CNN) — Can money buy happiness? “This notion that money cannot buy happiness is just, like, patently false,” social psychologist Elizabeth Dunn recently told CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta on his podcast Chasing Life. “Money can absolutely buy happiness,” said Dunn, the coauthor of “Happy Money: The Science of Happier Spending.” “And if you hear anyone say money can’t buy happiness, I would say, tell them to try giving some of it away.”You can listen to the full episode here. “Don’t just buy things you like all the time without even thinking about it,” Dunn said. “And if so, could you use money to buy your way out of it?”Dunn said her research showed that buying time is a great and underutilized way to turn money into happiness.

What to Watch at the First Trump-Biden Debate
  + stars: | 2024-06-27 | by ( Shane Goldmacher | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Mr. Biden sought this historically early confrontation to force into focus the stark difference of their competing visions for America. Mr. Trump has been eager to debate, too. He sees Mr. Biden as cognitively diminished since they last clashed on the debate stage in October 2020. Mr. Trump is savoring the chance to lay into Mr. Biden’s record on the border and inflation in particular. The animosity is expected to be palpable inside the audience-free CNN television studio in Atlanta, where they will debate for 90 of the most consequential minutes of the campaign.

Things like Broadway-style shows, multicourse meals, buffets, pool access, and onboard activities are built into the price of a typical sailing. I'm also willing to pay a little more to select a cabin far away from elevators and loud entertainment venues. Room service offers a level of convenience that makes the delivery fee palatableAlthough some room service options remain complimentary, many now come with an extra fee. However, room service often comes with an additional fee. However, when it came to deciding who to invite to this spring soiree, the mood got heavy in a hurry. I wondered if my son was becoming a mean kidMy plan was to invite the whole class just like we did the previous year, but when I mentioned this to my son, he was not on board. AdvertisementI asked him how he felt when he wasn't invited to an event and reminded him how important it is to always be kind. The kids in question didn't even end up attending the party, but that really wasn't the point. Next year, he still might not want to invite the whole class for his birthday so perhaps we pivot and also have an end of the year class party with everyone, an idea Edlynn suggested.

Why Bolivia is Latin America’s next dining destination

Capital city La Paz boasts three eateries — Gustu, Ancestral and Phayawi — currently ranked among the top 100 restaurants in Latin America. At this luxury escape in White Lake, N.Y., about a two-hour drive from Manhattan, immerse yourself in more than 100 acres along the Toronto Reservoir. Or better yet, get into the reservoir and go paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking and swimming. And because the Chatwal Lodge is set within the approximately 2,500-acre Chapin Estate, you can also fly-fish on private trout streams there. On dry land, pretend you’re back in summer camp and try archery, birdhouse decorating, baking classes and yoga. Or visit the recreation center where you can play shuffleboard, duckpin bowling, ping pong, billiards and board games.

Opinion: Why gardens and poems rhyme
  + stars: | 2024-04-22 | by ( Opinion Tess Taylor | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
This year, particularly, I’ve been meditating on the fact that gardens and poems share critical, linked invitations. And because even as the planet warms, gardens and poems help cool us off, practically and emotionally. I don’t think I’m overstating the case to say that time spent with poems and gardens build pathways that actually repair us. In their own small plots, poems build diverse networks as well: Sinking into the rhythms and pleasures of literature stimulates the parts of our brains attuned to empathy, helping us build attention, kindness, compassion, regard. Gardens and poems invite that kind of dwelling.

The four-year total return for the S & P 500 since March 23, 2020, is just about 150%, or 25.7% annualized. .SPX mountain 2020-03-23 S & P 500 since the Covid low This is, of course, an idealized starting point from which to measure performance. While the S & P 500 bottomed at around a three-year low under 2,200, the index spent only a few weeks under 2,500. More qualitatively, it's a bull market, and in a bull market the overshoots occur to the upside, so a rally being "ahead of itself" is not fatal.
