Morton/APHurricane survivors returning to damaged houses face a torrent of challenges – if they’re lucky enough to have a home at all. Residents should “return home only when local officials say it is safe to do so,” the Federal Emergency Management Agency says. Once you get there, “Walk carefully around the outside of your home to check for loose power lines, gas leaks, and structural damage,” the National Weather Service says. In a large part of American political discourse, overt cynicism is the currency of sophistication. It is a sign of political savviness, even worldliness, to know that politicians are creatures of pure self-interest, with no solid beliefs, concerns or preoccupations. For years, the savviest position was the cynical one: Their vocal opposition notwithstanding, neither Republican lawmakers nor conservative judges would actually try to overturn Roe v. Wade. And public cynicism notwithstanding, they want to do this even if it costs them votes in the short term. The same was and remains true for Republicans and abortion.

Polling increasingly shows Biden and the Democratic Party may face difficulties next election. AdvertisementTrouble's brewing in the SenateAs a result of successful midterm elections in 2022, the Democratic Party currently holds a 51-seat majority (comprised of Democrats and Democratic-caucusing independents) in the Senate. For the Democratic Party to hold on to the majority, it'll likely have to hold onto the seats it currently has in increasingly red states like West Virginia, Ohio, and Montana. If the Democratic Party loses control of the Senate, it makes it much more difficult for Biden or any Democratic president to appoint a new justice to the Supreme Court if any vacancies arise. Biden's already proven he can defeat Trump in a presidential election by highlighting the former president's track record in the White House.

Aug 28 (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Idalia was expected to intensify into a major hurricane on Monday as it barreled toward Florida's Gulf Coast, where authorities urged millions of residents to prepare to evacuate ahead of an expected landfall early Wednesday morning. The storm's growing intensity and its current northerly track put some 20 million Floridians under hurricane and tropical storm watches. "This is going to be a major hurricane. This is going to be a powerful hurricane and this is absolutely going to impact the state of Florida." To the east of Idalia, Hurricane Franklin, the first major hurricane of the season, meandered in the Atlantic, where it was forecast to turn to the northeast over the next two days.

Every morning at the stroke of nine, in the western Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi, the entire town square comes to a standstill for a moment of silence to mourn the war dead. Languid, operatic music flows from a speaker positioned on a wrought iron balcony overlooking the cobblestone square. For a few minutes, as the sun beams down and flags snap in the wind, everyone and everything stops. Chernivtsi, tucked into the southwest corner of Ukraine, hundreds of miles from the front, has never been hit by a missile — and it’s not small, 300,000 people. There are few checkpoints or military vehicles or clumps of young men in camouflage crowding the coffee machine at the supermarket — like there always are in Ukraine’s cities in the east, center and south.

Filed: July 17, 2023, 11 p.m. GMTFifty years after the death of Bruce Lee, who galvanised the imaginations of generations of young people worldwide with feats of kung fu immortalised on screen, it sometimes seems as if his legacy of the martial art he practiced is fading in Hong Kong. Born in San Francisco but brought up in the Asian financial hub which would make him famous, Lee died of brain edema aged 32 on July 20, 1973, just six days before the release of “Enter the Dragon”, his most popular film. “He was exceptionally talented and it’s a shame he passed away at such a young age,” said 60-year-old Dorothy Tam, whose hair is now graying, as she punched a sandbag in a small martial arts school covered with bamboo scaffolding in western Kowloon.

Russia and Ukraine on Tuesday accused each other of plotting to stage an attack on Europe's biggest nuclear power plant, where the International Atomic Energy Agency has repeatedly warned of potential catastrophe from nearby military clashes. "The IAEA experts have requested additional access that is necessary to confirm the absence of mines or explosives," it added. loadingIt was not clear from the IAEA statement why the agency wanted access to those two reactor units' rooftops. The IAEA said it was aware of reports that mines and other explosives have been placed in and around the plant. "With military tension and activities increasing in the region where this major nuclear power plant is located, our experts must be able to verify the facts on the ground," the IAEA said.

The complicated reality of America’s oldest president was encapsulated on Thursday as Congress approved a bipartisan deal he brokered to avoid a national default. Yet just before the voting got underway, Mr. Biden tripped over a sandbag at the Air Force Academy commencement, plunging to the ground.

CNN —President Joe Biden tripped on a sandbag and fell as he completed handing out diplomas at the US Air Force Academy commencement in Colorado on Thursday. A group of men, including an official with the Air Force Academy and two Secret Service agents, grasped onto Biden’s arms to help him back to his feet. He’s also been seen slipping on the stairs as he boards Air Force One. In his speech to graduates, Biden did make light of his age, which his political rivals have seized upon as evidence of an inability to serve another term. Biden told US Air Force Academy graduates they were entering a rapidly changing world as he stressed the critical role of US support for its allies and partners and emphasized ongoing US assistance for Ukraine.

SYDNEY, April 2 (Reuters) - Heavy rain brought flash flooding to Australia's largest city Sydney on Sunday, prompting rescues and residents to sandbag houses, as authorities warned of bad weather ahead. A NSW State Emergency Service (SES) spokesperson told Reuters two people were pulled safely from cars that become stranded in floodwaters in Sydney's inner suburbs. "Don't walk drive or ride through floodwater," the SES spokesperson said. The nation's weather forecaster issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Sydney on Sunday, forecasting heavy rain and possible flash flooding, and warned of more rain for the city this week. "That situation can change quickly so if people monitor the conditions and take heed of those warnings ... that would be excellent to keep people safe," the NSW SES spokesperson said.
