NATO gives it a global bedrock of legitimacy, support for the dollar, and the post-Soviet hegemony it thrives upon. Saturday’s misunderstanding considered, Trump’s comments come at a devastatingly bad time for Europe. The more the US bemoans its allies and their miserly neglect of NATO, and withdraw from it, the less powerful it is. Is NATO willing to go to war with Moscow over Russian-speaking parts of the Baltic state of Estonia? He is not simply saying the US won’t help NATO allies who haven’t paid.

Bayer slow-motion breakup may leave clunky core

LONDON, Nov 8 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Bayer’s (BAYGn.DE) planned surgery risks leaving an ailing rump. Valued in line with peers, Bayer’s seeds, drugs and consumer units could be worth 54 billion euros, 38 billion euros and 16 billion euros respectively, according to Breakingviews calculations using LSEG data. Take off debt and pensions, and Bayer’s equity should total nearly 60 billion euros, some 47% above its current market capitalisation. But hiving off the seeds business would leave a pharma business hitched to a consumer unit, a model shunned by rivals Pfizer (PFE.N), Sanofi (SASY.PA) and GSK (GSK.L). The first Republican presidential debate is scheduled for August 23, 2023, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Without Trump at the debate, seven other candidates are set to make their cases for the White House. Here's a look at how the debate is coming together, as the GOP candidates had to meet a set of criteria to even appear onstage. Christie, once a close ally of Trump, has consistently been the fiercest critic of the former president in the GOP race. Suarez, should he make it onstage, will likely just focus on boosting his profile to GOP voters beyond South Florida.

The fees amount to some 15% of the 857 million euros banks and fund Algebris have agreed to backstop. The fees in Saipem’s (SPMI.MI) 2 billion euro rights issue amounted to less than 5% of the amount banks had agreed to mop up. Monte Paschi says investors have committed 37 million euros and others say they will take up more than 50% of the 900 million euro portion of the rights issue reserved for private investors. That implies the banks may get stuck with some 400 million euros of unsold stock in a worst case scenario. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com RegisterFor Monte Paschi, the cost of the rights issue will cut some 15 basis points off its Tier 1 capital ratio target of 14.2% for 2024.
