He did not show up, according to two people familiar with the matter. A week later, Mr. Rivera went on a rampage, randomly stabbing three people to death as he stalked across Manhattan, the authorities say. Mr. Rivera’s apparent descent into homicidal madness shows the difficulty that the medical and legal systems have in keeping track of some of the city’s least stable people and ensuring they stay connected to care. He was required to attend two in-person sessions with a case manager, complete two phone check-ins and go to therapy in the first month. That schedule was one of the strictest available under the supervised release program.

A Dallas anesthesiologist was sentenced to 190 years in federal prison in a case where he was convicted of injecting drugs into IV bags, leading to at least one death. He was sentenced in federal court Wednesday to a total of 2,280 months, which the judge ordered to be served consecutively. Doctors began to suspect an issue with the IV bags in August 2022, after a 18-year-old patient’s condition became critical during a routine sinus surgery, prosecutors said. Video presented as evidence also showed Ortiz “repeatedly retrieving IV bags from the warming bin and replacing them” shortly before the bags were taken into surgery, prosecutors said. Doctors testified at the trial, noting that the medical emergencies occurred shortly after new IV bags were hung during the procedures.

“Mary Jane Veloso is coming home,” Marcos said in a statement. Philippine Foreign Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega said at a news conference in Manila that Filipino authorities would discuss the legal terms of Veloso’s transfer with their Indonesian counterparts. The Indonesian government has asked the Department of Justice in Manila to formally request Veloso’s transfer back to the Philippines, Justice Department spokesperson Mico Clavano said. Veloso traveled to Indonesia in 2010 where her godsister reportedly told her a job as a domestic worker awaited her. That Philippine case helped convince Indonesian authorities to delay Veloso’s execution and eventually consider her transfer back to her country, Clavano said.

Just hours after 51-year-old Ramon Rivera was taken into custody following the trio of slayings, New York City Mayor Eric Adams was already questioning why the homeless man was walking free. A lawyer said his client was allegedly paid to have sex with Matt Gaetz at a 2017 party. A man accused of three fatal stabbings in New York City has an extensive criminal history. CNN —Donald Trump’s increasingly provocative Cabinet picks have left some Republican senators aghast and Washington in shock. The dismay engulfing establishment elites contrasted with the euphoria rocketing through conservative networks and social media among Trump fans. News that Hegseth had been picked to lead the Pentagon rocked Washington the night before the Gaetz pick and sparked similar questions about Trump’s motives. What issue did your vote come down to in the end? Starting in mid-August, we spoke regularly to 13 young voters who were torn about their choice in the presidential election, to track how and why their opinions were evolving. “I can’t believe it, but I did end up voting for Donald Trump,” said Abigail, a 23-year-old Virginian who backed Mr. Biden last time. She felt Mr. Trump was a strong leader, liked his choice of JD Vance and felt Democrats made assumptions based on gender. Even those in our group who sharply disagreed with one another felt a measure of appreciation for the chance to talk and listen.

WASHINGTON — The Department of Justice on Friday charged an Iranian man in a murder-for-hire plot to assassinate then-candidate Donald Trump and two others in a plot to kill an American journalist critical of Tehran. The three who were charged are Farhad Shakeri of Iran; Carlisle Rivera of Brooklyn, New York; and Jonathan Loadholt, of Staten Island, New York. Around Oct. 7, the Iranian official tasked Shakeri with providing a plan within seven days to kill Trump, he told law enforcement in recorded interviews, the complaint says. CNN —The Justice Department on Friday announced federal charges in a thwarted Iranian plot to kill Donald Trump before the presidential election. According to court documents, Iranian officials asked Farhad Shakeri, 51, in September to focus on surveilling and ultimately assassinating Trump. But IRGC officials told Shakeri on October 7 to focus only on Trump, court documents say, and that he had seven days to formulate an assassination plan. Shakeri would pay these criminal associates, like his two co-conspirators, to monitor the victims Iranian officials sought to assassinate, according to court documents. Correction: An earlier version of this story stated that all three men were specifically charged in the plot against Donald Trump.

The Department of Justice on Friday charged an Iranian man and two New York residents in murder-for-hire plots targeting then-candidate Donald Trump and others. The department said the plot was part of Iran's efforts to exact revenge for the death of Iranian military leader Qasem Soleimani during the Trump administration. Around Oct. 7, the Iranian official tasked Shakeri with providing a plan within seven days to kill Trump, he told law enforcement in recorded interviews, the complaint says. Local political parties are largely divided based on the issue of Puerto Rico’s territorial status. For our final Times Opinion focus group of the 2024 election, we spoke with late-deciding voters — Americans who were seesawing between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump recently and making up their minds at the last minute. All of our 15 late deciders were from swing states like Pennsylvania and Michigan, and many of them voted for Mr. Trump in 2016 and for Joe Biden in 2020. No surprise, most of them had concerns and hang-ups about both of the candidates, but it quickly became clear that Mr. Trump, in particular, was doing himself no favors with these voters. As for Ms. Harris, most of these voters thought she would be "more of the same" as president, rather than a leader who pursues changes, and saw her as less authentic than Mr. Trump.. But in the end, years of misgivings and doubts about Mr. Trump outweighed the uncertainty about Ms. Harris with several participants, and more of them saw her winning than Mr. Trump.

So let’s do our best to tell you about Game 5 of the 2024 World Series — the game that crowned the Los Angeles Dodgers the champions of baseball, but also very possibly the craziest World Series clincher ever. Was that upside-down enough to qualify as the craziest World Series clincher ever? That was Game 5 of the 2024 World Series, the only postseason game in history in which all that happened. On one hand, STATS tells us that the previous two teams to do it in a World Series game both won anyway. That would be the Cubs, in Game 7 in 2016, and the Cardinals, in The David Freese Game (Game 6) in 2011.
