“Black maternal health and reproductive health has to be a conversation that I hear from any candidate for me to be on board to vote for them,” she said. Black women in the U.S. also face greater risks bearing children. “The landscape for reproductive health for Black women has gotten far more dangerous in the last two and a half years,” she said. When asked, the Harris campaign did not point to specific policies on Black maternal health. Desta-Bell said she’s found growing interest from voters about the state of Black maternal health and reproductive justice.

Heli-hiking on a remote slice of Vancouver Island in Canada. Concocting your own perfume in southern France. Planning a shoot with a New York fashion photographer. Now that amenities like infinity pools and posh spas (rebranded as wellness centers) are practically de rigueur at upscale lodgings, many properties are trying to distinguish themselves with activities that are ever more bespoke and brag-worthy. Indeed, said Janelle Ruhumuliza, a travel adviser with Embark Beyond, “experiences have to go further than what they were before.” She notes that social media has amplified travelers’ desire to “one-up” what others are doing online.

The days of women standing up next to their philandering husbands should be well in the rear view. Melania’s decision to stay married to Donald despite very public evidence of an affair is her choice to make. (Her decision to stay married to a man who very publicly cheated on his first wife, is virulently misogynistic and has stoked hatred of immigrants tells us something else about her character.) Former First Lady Melania Trump stands alongside her husband, former President Donald Trump at a fundraising event in Palm Beach, Florida on April 6, 2024. Would Donald stay married to Melania if she faced multiple very public affair accusations?

My Apple Vision Pro nightmare

So when the Apple Vision Pro arrived, I was giddy with excitement to dive into the type of toy I'd dreamt of since childhood. The Vision Pro tries to answer the question of how you can use a computer without a mouse or keyboard. Apple Vision Pro marks the foundation of a new architecture of total digital isolation. Apple touted your ability to use the Apple Vision Pro to connect to your laptop, simulating a screen for your device. In the end, I followed the path of so many other Vision Pro early adopters and became an early returner.

How the Humble Sheet Cake Became Top Tier

The Los Angeles-based baker Michelle Boulos can still picture the sheet cakes she ate as a child: slathered with bright white frosting, decorated with tiny plastic balloons. But the confections she makes and sells via her Instagram account No Good Cakes are something else entirely. On one recent creation, frills of buttercream surrounded an acid green ombré surface inspired by a chemical spill. Boulos, 34, started baking the fantastical cakes out of her home in 2022 after making one for a wedding. “I got bitten by the sheet cake bug,” she says.

If you do a Google search for the Pickleball Hall of Fame, you may find its humble website, with the biographies of the hall of famers stacked on top of each other in a rudimentary blog, hosted for free on blogspot. Do these elite athletes get stopped for autographs or get the red-carpet treatment? Not exactly. Despite pickleball’s meteoric rise from obscure to de rigueur, many pioneering picklers are hardly known—and now have to jockey for court time alongside the newbies.

Season 2, Episode 6: ‘Qui’“Yellowjackets” often favors the disturbing over the tragic. And for a moment it appears that’s how the long-awaited birth of Teen Shauna’s child is going to go. It’s the most upsetting thing that could possibly happen — or at least it’s what you would think would be the most upsetting thing that could possibly happen. This week’s episode, titled “Qui,” challenges that with a bait-and-switch scenario that swaps out the gruesome for the mournful. It was easy to guess that Shauna’s baby wasn’t going to survive.
Meta and Amazon have announced two series of mass layoffs in the span of months. After years of companies trying to attract and placate workers amid a labor shortage, businesses are reasserting some of their power. "We read about two rounds of layoffs now and shrug and say, 'When's the third?'" Drew Angerer/Getty ImagesIt's rare for a company to conduct multiple rounds of layoffs, according to data from Crunchbase. Amazon and Meta did it, so it won't stand out as much."
Snap is moving to replace its cash performance bonuses with a more limited potential pay increase. Snap will change its employee performance bonus system as the company continues to reduce costs amid struggles with profitability. For many years, Snap employees could receive an annual cash bonus equal to 10% of their base salary after performance reviews. Moving away from a cash performance bonus, however, is rare, even as guaranteed grants of stock in compensation packages become more costly for companies. A performance bonus can range from 5% to 20% of a person's base salary at major tech firms, according to data from tech compensation database Levels.fyi.
Hong Kong’s hamsters sound shrill warning
  + stars: | 2023-01-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
HONG KONG, Jan 5 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Almost a year to the day since Hong Kong culled 2,000 hamsters to combat Covid-19, the city is rescinding a ban on importing the creatures for sale, Bloomberg reported on Thursday. The rodents’ return is a small but welcome landmark in its gradual reopening. Imported hamsters must still test negative for the virus before they can be sold. As Hong Kong prepares to start reopening the mainland border next week, the city needs to cure lingering, illogical bureaucracy, which will hamper urgent efforts to heal the economy, and resurrect normal life. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.
We knew that the stock market had formed a bubble and that it was going to pop as interest rates went up. That, in turn, pushed the stock market off a cliff so steep that we still cannot see the bottom. This all goes back to the Fed's move to keep interest rates at 0% after the 2008 financial crisis. Since interest rates were so low, companies that didn't make money could just borrow to keep the lights on. In 2018, Wall Street got a preview of how ugly this bubble would look once it popped in earnest.
Remember slips? Your mother or grandmother likely wore those fusty, lace-trimmed polyester or silk skirts and dresses underneath their clothing, so that no trace of the human body could be detected. These days, slips are more likely to be worn as cheeky clothing on their own, and lingerie pieces designed to be worn out, such as bra tops, are widespread. But until now, pants or skirts with some level of coverage have remained de rigueur for a stroll around town or a trip to the market.
