Read previewElon Musk might just be losing any hopes he had of one-upping his arch nemesis, Mark Zuckerberg. A lost battleElon Musk is facing a tougher battle with Mark Zuckerberg's social media empire. Beata Zawrzel/Getty ImagesOne of Musk's biggest challenges in turning X into a legitimate rival to Zuckerberg's social media platforms is generating revenue. In Musk's own words, it's a declaration of "war" with the very people he needs to boost falling revenue at X. But none of this helps Musk in its effort to outdo Zuckerberg at his own social media game and widen X's appeal.

The video, released Wednesday by the Kremlin, showed the Russian president was not happy with news from the southern region of Kursk. The head of the city of Rylsk – some distance from the most advanced Ukrainian units – said Friday more than half the population of 15,000 had left. An expeditionary forceUkrainian troops, even if reinforced, cannot expect to occupy several hundred square kilometers of Russian territory. But holding a large chunk Russian territory is beyond their capacity and probably beyond their goal. “The unfolding events demonstrate the extent to which Moscow has deeply depended on sanctuary in Russian territory to wage its war against Ukraine,” Barros told CNN.

Musician Rosalía brings the straitjacket back into view
  + stars: | 2024-05-03 | by ( Leah Dolan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —On Tuesday, 12-time Latin Grammy winner Rosalía stepped out in New York wearing an outfit that demanded a double-take. (Since the release of her third album, “Motomami,” Rosalía has been spotted in everything from biker-style shield sunglasses to Harley Davidson helmets). In 1994, the New York State’s Office of Mental Health proposed that straitjackets be discontinued after 18 patients died while restrained or in “unsupervised seclusion” between 1988 and 1992. But Rosalía isn’t the first to attempt to recontextualize the garment in the name of fashion. At the Gucci show in 2019, Ayesha Tan-Jones protested the label's straitjacket-inspired clothes by writing "Mental health is not fashion" on their hands.

After sweeping the Emmys with the previous iteration of its cast, the Netflix drama looks ready to limp across the finish line unbowed, but slightly bloodied. Fflyn Edwards as Prince Harry, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana and Rufus Kampa as Prince William in "The Crown" Season 6. Ivanka Trump tried to distance herself from her father's scandals after he left the White House. Donald Trump is the GOP 2024 frontrunner, but is mired in legal troubles. But on Wednesday, she'll be dragged back into his drama when she takes the stand to testify in her father's New York civil fraud trial. Ivanka Trump speaks at a campaign event with her father, then-President Donald Trump, in Kenosha, Wis., on Nov. 2, 2020. Donald Trump has denied the fraud accusations leveled against him, claiming the charges are politically motivated.

On Friday, Trump's NY fraud-trial judge ruled Ivanka Trump must testify next week. Lawyers for the New York attorney general's office, who plan to call Ivanka Trump to the witness stand on Friday at their ongoing, $250 million Trump fraud trial, agree it was quite the deal. Her testimony at the non-jury trial could prove highly damaging to her father and two eldest brothers, Donald Trump, Jr., and Eric Trump – Trump Organization vice presidents who, like their father, are defendants in James' lawsuit. "Ivanka Trump tried to negotiate the number down to 2 billion," Wallace said in openings, "before agreeing to 2.5 billion." But during the same period, Donald Trump's net worth statements valued the exact same unit at $20.8 million.

Why, when we think of climate change, do we think of big oil, not big ag; Exxon and not Tyson? It’s time you met the big ag lobby, one of the most powerful influences on policy in America. But when we started digging into the big ag lobby, we discovered it’s basically — “The most powerful lobby on Capitol Hill. So the big ag lobby has one key aim — block environmental regulation. I absolutely envy how good these lobbyists are at their job.” It’s outrageous what the big ag lobby has gotten away with.

Apple didn't mention the metaverse once

Apple's mixed-reality headset is finally here, but it isn't talking about the metaverse. Apple may see the term metaverse, pushed by Mark Zuckerberg, as confusing and alienating. Apple mixed-reality headset, called Vision Pro, is finally here but for anyone watching the grand unveiling in Cupertino something was conspicuously missing: The metaverse didn't get a single mention. At no point did the Apple CEO use the term metaverse. "In the same way Mac introduced us to personal computing, and iPhone introduced us to mobile computing, Apple Vision Pro will introduce us to spatial computing," he said.

But there's a similar legacy battle going on inside LVMH, the French luxury house run by Bernard Arnault. The children of the world's richest man are vying for influence within LVMH in a "Darwinian" fight. Showrunner Jesse Armstrong says his fictional Roy family is inspired by several famous dynasties, such as the Hearsts — the family behind Hearst Communications — and the Redstones — the controlling influence behind Paramount Global. There's still plenty of rivalry between the progeny of Bernard Arnault, CEO of luxury goods behemoth LVMH and world's richest person. The Roy family of "Succession."
Citi thinks cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase's future will be plagued with regulatory uncertainty, and investors may want to steer clear because of that. The firm downgraded shares of the platform to neutral/high risk from buy/high risk with a $65 price target, down from $80. COIN YTD mountain Coinbase stock could face more pressure as the legal dispute with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission unfolds, Citi says. But Citigroup isn't convinced that's likely, especially since Coinbase is pursuing its own lawsuit against the SEC in response to a Wells notice received in March. Coinbase shares fell more than 1% after the downgrade.
After shelling out $787.5 billion to settle Dominion's lawsuit, Fox has more troubles on the way. Atop the list is a separate lawsuit from Smartmatic, another election technology company that sued Fox News Network and its parent company, Fox Corp., in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election. Smartmatic's defamation lawsuit asks for $2.7 billion in damages and was filed against Fox Corp.; Fox News Network; hosts Jeanine Pirro, Maria Bartiromo, and Lou Dobbs; and Powell and Giuliani. Aside from the Smartmatic case, Fox News has to deal with potential shareholder lawsuits. The overall value of Fox Corp. — which also includes Fox Sports and the streaming service Tubi — is more than $17.6 billion.
Now, two voting-technology companies, Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic, want to make another Murdoch media property pay even more for Fox News's role in spreading election denial. But the phone-hacking scandal showed how Murdoch has weathered challenges to his power before. Another key difference from the phone-hacking scandal is the presence of written records that show Fox execs knew exactly what was going on. In the last quarter of 2022, Fox Corp. netted $321 million on $4.6 billion in revenue. And during the phone-hacking scandal, Murdoch showed fierce loyalty.
Goldman Sachs estimates 300 million jobs could be affected by AI. A new report from Goldman Sachs reckons generative AI models like OpenAI's GPT-4 could impact 300 million full-time jobs globally. OpenAI's apparent willingness to roll out advanced AI models as soon as they're ready points more to a future where the tech replaces vast swathes of the workforce. History dictates that innovation with the power to disrupt and eliminate jobs typically paves the way for new fields, in time. A 2020 report from the World Economic Forum predicted AI will displace 85 million jobs by 2025, and create 97 million new ones.
There’s No Quick Fix for Social Media
  + stars: | 2023-01-20 | by ( Suzanne Nossel | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Social media is in crisis. Elon Musk’s Twitter is still afloat, but the engine is sputtering as users and advertisers consider jumping ship. Many view this moment of reckoning over social media with grim satisfaction. Advocates, politicians and activists have railed for years against the dark sides of online platforms—hate speech, vicious trolling, disinformation, bias against certain views and the incubation of extremist ideas. Social media has been blamed for everything from the demise of local news to the rise of autocracy worldwide.
Anthony Scaramucci spoke about his relationship with Sam Bankman-Fried at a Davos crypto panel. Scaramucci alluded to the circles of hell in Dante's "Divine Comedy" and compared SBF to Bernie Madoff. FTX bought 30% of SkyBridge Capital for $45 million in September 2022. The Financial Times reported that SkyBridge Capital also bought $10 million of FTX's cryptocurrency, FTT, as part of the deal's requirements. "I made a mistake being involved with Sam," Scaramucci said.
The tl;dr version: It seems that SBF’s US lawyers worked out an agreement with Bahamian prosecutors to drop the extradition fight, which would have taken months, if not years, to play out. But SBF’s local defense lawyer, Roberts, said he wasn’t included in that plan, and claimed prosecutors wouldn’t share the US indictment with him. But then he was denied bail in the Bahamas, meaning he wouldn’t be able to fight extradition from the comfort of his luxury home. After a week of that, SBF is ready to face the music on US soil. To be sure, the federal detention facility in Brooklyn where SBF could end up while awaiting trial isn’t exactly the Ritz.
The report found that the FBI and DHS continue to spend more on international terrorism, despite saying for years that domestic terrorism now poses a greater threat to Americans. The report said a change in how the FBI categorizes domestic terrorism ideologies has been a hindrance to understanding the problem. In 2017, FBI created a new category of domestic terrorism ideology called “Black Identity Extremists,” but then stopped using it. The report also criticized the FBI and DHS as having been conservative in hunting for threat intelligence posted publicly on social media. Research conducted by MIT’s Technology Review found that “users consistently migrate from milder to more extreme content” on YouTube.
The biggest cable company in the industry at that time had about a million customers. And the second question is, very much related to that, for years now, the bull investor thesis has been broadband growth. So does that mean that broadband growth is no longer the big growth story it once was? No, I think there's plenty of broadband growth to get for us and there's continued broadband adoption to get for the whole industry. And I think there's some value in scale which can translate into consumer value as well.
