KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — A United Nations team said Sunday that 291 patients were left at Gaza’s largest hospital after Israeli troops had others evacuate. Those left included 32 babies in extremely critical condition, trauma patients with severely infected wounds, and others with spinal injuries who are unable to move. The team was able to tour Shifa Hospital for an hour after about 2,500 displaced people, mobile patients and medical staff left the sprawling compound Saturday morning, said the World Health Organization, which led the mission. It said more teams will attempt to reach Shifa in coming days to try to the evacuate patients to southern Gaza, where hospitals are also overwhelmed. “We left at gunpoint,” Mahmoud Abu Auf told The Associated Press by phone after he and his family left the crowded hospital.

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The border crossing between Egypt and Gaza opened on Saturday to let desperately needed aid flow to Palestinians running short of food, medicine and water in the territory that is under an Israeli siege. More than 200 trucks carrying roughly 3,000 tons of aid, which had been positioned near the crossing for days, began heading into Gaza. Many in Gaza, reduced to eating one meal a day and without enough water to drink, are waiting desperately for the aid. Hundreds of foreign passport holders also waited to cross from Gaza to Egypt to escape the conflict. Israel said Friday it does not plan to take long-term control over the tiny territory, home to some 2.3 million Palestinians.

Israel appears to be preparing for a ground invasion of Gaza where it hopes to wipe out Hamas. The attacks prompted a swift and strong counter response from Israel which declared war on Hamas and vowed to lay siege to Gaza. But even the total eradication of Hamas would fail to solve the tensions between Israel and Palestinians, Telhami said. "If Israel wipes out Hamas and leaves Gaza, either Hamas resurges or a more violent option rises," he said. The near future almost certainly includes more civilian deaths and an escalation of violence in Gaza , according to experts.

The back-and-forth is raising fears of another alarming new dimension to a war already marred by alleged war crimes and terrible suffering among civilians. In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that the potential for “sabotage” by Ukraine at the plant was high. Given Russia’s previous nuclear rhetoric and fog of war misinformation, many Western observers are likely to give Zelensky the benefit of the doubt. One Ukrainian official in Kherson stated that as Russian forces moved their equipment to the eastern bank of the river, "we destroy it." Fighting intensifiesThere were already signs on Thursday that fighting was intensifying in Kherson as Russian troops withdrew. Serhiy Khlan, a member of the Kherson Regional Council, said on Facebook that a large buildup of Russian troops had been blown up in Kakhovka in Kherson. Another Ukrainian official noted that Russia hadn't asked Ukraine to create a "green corridor," or safe route, for Russia to withdraw its troops from Kherson safely. While efforts to reoccupy Kherson might be fraught with danger, analysts say Ukraine's forces have executed a well-fought campaign to recapture Kherson from Russia.
