To the Editor:Re “Less Marriage, Less Sex, Less Agreement,” by Nicholas Kristof (column, May 30):Women’s discontent with marriage is not new; it just became more obvious because the availability of both birth control and abortion freed women to express their discontent by either not marrying or not remarrying. Recently the number of women who are choosing not to marry has reached a level that is alarming to those who become anxious when the power of traditional hierarchies weakens. So it’s not surprising that a prominent feature of the MAGA movement is an effort to bully women back into dependency by appointing Supreme Court judges willing to revoke their access to abortion and perhaps also birth control. This bullying gets dressed up in religious rhetoric that ignores the obvious truth that our freedom of religion must always include freedom from others’ religious convictions.

The rate of "gray divorce" — a term that describes divorce at age 50 and older — doubled from 1990 to 2019, according to a 2022 study published in The Journals of Gerontology. The 'chronic economic strain' of gray divorceIn heterosexual relationships, gray divorce typically "has more negative implications for women than for men," said Kamila Elliott, a certified financial planner and co-founder of Collective Wealth Partners, based in Atlanta. Altogether, women's standard of living declined by 45% following a gray divorce, while the drop for men was less severe, at 21%, Brown and Lin wrote. These negative economic outcomes persisted over time, "indicating that gray divorce operates as a chronic economic strain," they said. For example, let's say a husband is eligible for a larger Social Security benefit relative to his female spouse.

red_moon_riseThe rules around claiming Social Security benefits are full of caveats and nuances. "Your ex is worth twice as much dead than alive," said Mary Beth Franklin, a certified financial planner and Social Security expert. The calculus assumes the first spouse to die had a larger Social Security retirement benefit than the survivor. Social Security rules for married, divorced spousesThe federal government determines Social Security benefits based on age and earnings history. Claiming benefits based on an ex-spouse's earnings record doesn't affect or reduce that former spouse's benefits, Colley said.

Her committee, she said, addresses "the desire of the families of loved ones abducted to Gaza to know as much as possible". Since the truce expired, Israeli authorities have declared six civilians and an army colonel dead in captivity. It has previously said dozens of hostages were killed in Israeli airstrikes, has threatened to execute hostages itself and suggested that some hostages were in the hands of other armed Palestinian factions. Additional considerations have been hostages' rough handling by captors, the reduced chances of them getting adequate medical care in Gaza and accounts of deaths by former fellow hostages. The military has recovered the bodies of one captive soldier and two civilian hostages, and freed one soldier in a rescue operation.
