It took months for Democrats to settle on their primary presidential calendar, an extended battle that ended up booting Iowa and New Hampshire from the mix and vaulting South Carolina to the top of the pack. “The 2024 calendar will absolutely not be the calendar for 2028,” said Nebraska state party chair Jane Kleeb. Under the current plan, South Carolina went first, then Nevada, Georgia and Michigan. “The process has to be rigorous, efficient and fair, and we have to make sure that it’s open and transparent,” said a state chair who asked not to be named. Scrapping a state like South Carolina from the top of the list may only alienate those voters.

“I will never excuse murder, and those were brutal, premeditated murders,” Gascón told CNN Thursday. Calling the brothers “model prisoners,” Gascón told CNN he believes there’s a good chance they would be paroled if the decision reaches the parole board. Erik Menendez, left, is seen in an October 31, 2016, photo and Lyle Menendez is seen in a February 22, 2018 photo. “I believe before Thanksgiving, they will be home,” one of the brothers’ attorneys, Mark Geragos, said Thursday. I think that the conviction was appropriate given what was there,” Gascón told CNN.

Los Angeles CNN —Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón is expected to announce his decision Thursday afternoon on whether to recommend resentencing in the case of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who were convicted of murdering their parents more than three decades ago. A judge will ultimately decide on the brothers’ case, and a hearing on the matter has been scheduled for November 26. The attorneys also said a letter Erik Menendez wrote to a cousin months before the killings alludes to the abuse he endured. The brothers’ story has taken on new interest following the September release of the Netflix series, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. Netflix also released a documentary on the Menendez case this month featuring both men discussing what led to the killings.

CNN —Lyle and Erik Menendez weren’t happy with a recent Netflix project about their lives, but another title from the streamer is giving them an opportunity to have their say. In “The Menendez Brothers,” a new documentary, the two men speak in extended interviews about what happened in the 1989 murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, inside the family’s Beverly Hills mansion. According to Lyle Menendez, it “was tremendously painful” when that didn’t happen. They were united in 2018 when he was transferred to the prison in San Diego, California, where Erik Menendez was being held. “The Menendez Brothers” is streaming on Netflix.

CNN —The question for prosecutors reexamining the murder convictions of Lyle and Erik Menendez is not whether they killed their parents, but how culpable they really are. Here’s a look at the timeline of the case over the decades, from the initial shooting to the recent efforts to alter their sentence. July 1993: The Menendez brothers go on trial in a Los Angeles courtroom, each with a separate jury, in a trial televised on Court TV. September 2024: Netflix releases the crime drama “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” a nine-episode series co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan about the killings. “We may be talking later, but that certainly has increased the attention by the public, and that’s why we’re being public about where we are.”A hearing on the Menendez brothers’ petition is set for November 29.

Now, trade economists say Trump's latest trade threat makes no sense. I love the company, but as you know, they've announced a few days ago that they're going to move a lot of their manufacturing business to Mexico," Trump said at Monday's event. AdvertisementJohn Deere is the latest company to face a threat of tariffs from Donald Trump. It's not the first time Trump has threatened companies and Trump's threat to impose large tariffs on imports also isn't new. Trump's tariff goals going into the next election go beyond his former policy on international imports.

Organizations are shifting to hybrid cloud and on-prem IT infrastructure for more control over data. Biogen on Thursday reported second-quarter earnings and revenue that topped estimates and hiked its full-year guidance, as the company's cost cuts showed progress and sales of its breakthrough Alzheimer's drug, Leqembi, and other new products beat expectations. Leqembi, which Biogen shares with Eisai, became the second drug proven to slow the progression of Alzheimer's to win approval in the U.S. last summer. That's above the $31 million analysts had expected, according to estimates compiled by StreetAccount. Tecfidera, for example, booked $252.2 million in revenue in the second quarter, which is relatively flat from the year-earlier period. Analysts had expected the once-blockbuster drug to rake in $233.3 million in revenue for the quarter, according to StreetAccount.

House Speaker Mike Johnson arrives to speak with reporters to discuss his proposal of sending aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan on April 17, 2024. AdvertisementIn an overlooked lawsuit, Donald Trump's lawyers are exhibiting a habit from his White House days: Hunting for anonymous sources. At each turn, a lawyer for the Pulitzer Board members stopped their clients from answering. The journalists whom Trump's lawyers deposed did, however, offer some characterization of the "consultants" who conducted the reviews. The Pulitzer Prize Board is hosted by Columbia University, in Manhattan, which manages the small organization's payroll and offers institutional support. For Black workers, weekly before-tax earnings as of the end of 2023 have risen 24.8% since the first quarter of 2020. "High unemployment for Black workers is a solvable problem," Fulton said. For years, the Duke professor Dan Ariely was at the top of his game. Three professors behind the blog Data Colada reported evidence of fake data in a 2012 paper Ariely coauthored on honesty pledges. "When people do take a risk and they succeed, everybody enjoys it," Ariely told BI. In 2010, Ariely told NPR that two dentists examining the same teeth for cavities would agree only 50% of the time, citing research from Delta Dental. Scientists identified a new species of Tyrannosaurs that's likely a predecessor to T. Rex. The new species shows the dinosaurs got bigger a lot earlier than scientists originally thought. Upon reexamination, the scientists found that the bones belonged to a dinosaur that lived 6 million to 7 million years before T. rex existed. That means that Tyrannosaurus, "also got bigger a lot earlier than we thought," Longrich said. Despite what many scientists thought, the T. Rex wasn't the first Tyrannosaurus, but the last, Longrich said.

In 2019, Henry Kissinger warned that the U.S. and China had entered the “foothills of a cold war,” and the Sino-American relationship has only worsened since. The prospect of a new cold war has induced some historians to reexamine the old one. Nick Bunker’s “In the Shadow of Fear: America and the World in 1950” is one such reexamination. But over the ensuing 10 months, Truman’s attempt to expand on FDR’s domestic legacy fell apart, and the Democratic coalition that had dominated American politics for two decades began to break up as well. Most perplexingly to Mr. Bunker, “American politics descended into strife at a moment when in so many ways the nation had little to fear.”

‘Intel Outside’ is more like it these days

The cash will come in handy for the company whose “Intel Inside” campaign is part of marketing lore, but the benefits of putting the subsidiary on a path to a standalone future are bigger. IMS dominates a specialized niche of semiconductor manufacturing, making laser-based tools that construct masks used to etch complex patterns on silicon-wafer circuitry. With Intel, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (2330.TW), and others rushing to build plants, there’s plenty of business. Intel’s own ambitious plans, including a recently unveiled $33 billion expansion in Germany, have opened it up to talking with outside investors. IMS might benefit similarly from being outside Intel.

Shares of the Swiss bank fell more than 24% after its biggest backer said it won't provide further financial support. Credit Suisse announced on Tuesday that it had found " material weakness " in its financial reporting process from prior years. Bank stocks were under pressure on Wednesday as the sharp drop of Credit Suisse rattled a segment of the market that was already reeling from two large bank failures in the past week. Some regional bank stocks saw even bigger declines. Credit Suisse struggles come on the heels of the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in the U.S. Those failures caused steep sell-offs in regional bank stocks on Monday.
BERLIN, Nov 21 (Reuters) - One of Germany's main industry lobby groups called on Monday for more support for industry to diversify trade beyond China, as the government prepares new policies aimed at reducing the German economy's dependence on Beijing. Planned measures such as stress tests and greater scrutiny on investments in China, outlined in a draft document seen by Reuters, would be an administrative burden for businesses, the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) said. "Everything we have heard so far about the German government's China strategy is extremely defensive," said Volker Treier, head of foreign trade at DIHK. "We need an active and resilient industrial policy and strategy in Europe with regards to raw materials, batteries or semiconductors." For many Nickelodeon actors, life at the network was surreal, the "Amanda Show" actor Raquel Lee told Insider. Schneider set up a meeting to discuss the situation. On the one hand, the success of Schneider's shows provided rare stability in a chaotic industry. None of Schneider's shows credited more than two female writers in the entirety of their runs; "Zoey 101" and "Drake & Josh" had zero. The writer wrote that Schneider once pressured her into simulating "being sodomized" while she was telling a story about high school, to her embarrassment.
Some tasks included connecting with local reporters and coordinating messaging with partner political outfits such as EMILY's List and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. That helped her boss' official congressional office save money it could then spend elsewhere, but it did nothing to help her own financial situation. Congressional staffers have used social-media accounts such as Dear White Staffers to spotlight professional burnout, inadequate pay, long hours, diversity failings, and caustic bosses. For example, one of the rules says a congressional staffer working in a congressional office must step outside the office to do campaign work. Or, if there is compensation offered — which isn't guaranteed — they may desperately need the additional money to supplement the low pay for congressional staff."
