Washington CNN —President Joe Biden is facing mounting pressure from Democratic lawmakers and allies to extend protections to immigrants in the United States amid party fears over President-elect Donald Trump’s promise of mass deportations. Some administration officials are skeptical that expanding or redesignating TPS would pass muster under an incoming administration beyond those that will already be up for renewal. Temporary protections for El Salvadorans in the United States, for example, are set to expire in early March. Just before leaving office in 2021, Trump provided Venezuelans already in the United States temporary protection from deportation. “People are on the edge of their seat,” one immigrant advocate told CNN, referring to immigrants in the United States.

Read previewAround 200,000 Haitians living in the US are on Temporary Protected Status, including many of those living in Springfield, Ohio, who have been targeted by former President Donald Trump and others with baseless claims about eating pets. Trump has already called for mass deportations from the town, saying last week: "We're going to start with Springfield and Aurora." "Once a country is designated, each individual covered by the designation must apply separately for TPS status," she said, noting that existing TPS holders must also renew their paperwork with each redesignation. However, if Trump wins, Leblang told BI this is far less likely. Indeed, it already was once before when Trump sought to end TPS for certain countries during his last administration.

The move comes as the Houthis have launched dozens of attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea. In its waning days, the Trump administration designated the Houthis a foreign terrorist organization over the strong objections of human rights and humanitarian aid groups. Yemen, on the tip of the Arabian Peninsula bordering the Red Sea, is the poorest country in the Arab world. While supporters of broad sanctions argue it’s possible to shape any enforcement mechanisms so to exempt food and humanitarian aid, aid organizations worry that fears of running afoul of U.S. regulation could scare away shippers, banks and other players vital to Yemen’s commercial food supply. The Red Sea attacks have already caused significant disruptions to global trade.

Considering contributing to a 529 plan for their college education, or making them your life insurance beneficiary. But when that generosity comes at the cost of depleting your own retirement savings, the prospect becomes a lot less compelling. At current levels, most American families will have absolutely zero interaction with federal estate taxes. Amorello explained: "Gifting money actually can help grandparents lessen their own net worth to lower estate taxes. Because if you're leaving behind an inheritance, but half of it is going to the estate taxes, that can be a daunting realization."

Why Egypt is asking its people to eat chicken feet

Abu Dhabi CNN —Egypt’s economic situation is so dire that the government is asking people to eat chicken feet. In Egypt, chicken feet are seen as the cheapest of meat items, considered by most as animal waste rather than food. After the recommendation to switch to chicken feet, the price of one kilogram of the product reportedly doubled to 20 Egyptian pounds ($0.67). But those firms don’t operate like private companies, enjoying special privileges without disclosing their financial data to the public. Experts have questioned why international creditors had not leveraged their loans to drive Egypt’s military out of the economy.
