Americans are doom spending
  + stars: | 2024-11-10 | by ( Erika Tulfo | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
While this kind of catharsis might work to temporarily allay worries, experts say doom spending poses a danger to consumers’ long-term financial health. Joe Raedle/Getty ImagesThat financial gloom is powering doom spending and, in turn, driving up credit card debt. Beyond the economy, experts say that internet habits play a significant role in driving doom spending, especially for younger consumers. But Alev says that she anticipates a pop in spending whether Americans feel positively or negatively about the outcome of the election. How do you curb doom spending?

This past Wednesday alone, he recorded 21 videos for the Harris campaign. Obama acolytes have spent the last eight years rationalizing Trump as the last gasp backlash to the Democrat and his presidency. While most of the party leaders Harris called that Sunday afternoon, including Bill Clinton, and immediately pledged support, Obama held off. Harris advisers knew Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi favored an open process to find a new nominee. And according to people who know about the conversations, he checks in with several of his own closest aides now helping run Harris’ campaign, such as current campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon and his own 2008 campaign manager, David Plouffe.

A poll released last week from AAPI Data, a data analytics firm that focuses on Asian Americans, found that 66% of Asian American voters plan to support Harris and 28% intend to back Trump. The same survey found that 62% of Asian American voters say they have a favorable opinion of Harris, compared with 35% who hold an unfavorable view. Republican officials declined to elaborate on efforts to win over Asian American voters. The Harris campaign has three full-time staffers at the national headquarters dedicated to engaging Asian American voters, a spokeswoman said, with additional staff being deployed to Georgia and other battleground states. There’s been an odd numbness in the political ecosystem regarding the apparent second attempt to assassinate former President Donald Trump. The problem with political discourse in America right now is that we are all stuck in a social media funhouse mirror booth. I promise you that the way Americans speak about one another online isn’t the way most Americans behave in person with one another. As social media rose and became the main distributor and facilitator of political information, our politics have become more combative and less collaborative. Right now, our political information ecosystem doesn’t reward incrementalism or nuance, instead punishing both and, more to the point, rewarding those who make up the best stories.

In a house with two small kids, clutter was a given. Our house wasn't dirty, but it was full of things we didn't need — clothes that no longer fit, threadbare towels, unused kitchen utensils, toys we'd outgrown. The idea of throwing or giving away things you no longer needed felt wasteful and foolish, so she just kept everything. Even today, getting him to toss broken or unused items takes an act of Congress. My upbringing informed how I see clutter as an adultGrowing up in a house like this colored how I see clutter and cleaning.

It's all unraveling at OpenAI (again)

In a statement to Business Insider, an OpenAI spokesperson reiterated the company's commitment to safety, highlighting an "anonymous integrity hotline" for employees to voice their concerns and the company's safety and security committee. Safety second (or third)A common theme of the complaints is that, at OpenAI, safety isn't first — growth and profits are. (In a responding op-ed, current OpenAI board members Bret Taylor and Larry Summers defended Altman and the company's safety standards.) "I have been disagreeing with OpenAI leadership about the company's core priorities for quite some time, until we finally reached a breaking point." For those outside the Westminster bubble, the announcement felt less like a starting pistol than a final gasp. But unlike Sunak, who with his wife Akshata Murty is worth an estimated £651 million ($828 million), most of us can’t afford it. The British economy never fully recovered from the 2008 recession and, consciously or not, most people still feel the sting every day. As Sam Knight recently noted in the New Yorker, the average British worker is estimated to be £14,000 ($17,800) worse off per year now than they would be if earnings had risen at pre-crisis rates. Her disastrous mini-budget wiped £30 billion off the UK economy that autumn, according to independent think tank Resolution Foundation, and sent interest rates rocketing.

CNN —The political rawness of the moment, as Israel pounds Gaza and outrage rocks American college campuses, means President Joe Biden’s big speech Tuesday condemning antisemitism is most notable for what he left unsaid. The speech was closely watched given the turmoil in the Middle East and its stunning political reaction in the US. “My commitment to the safety of the Jewish people, the security of Israel, and its right to exist as an independent Jewish state is ironclad. While praising the right to free speech as a fundamental American value, he condemned reported instances when some Jewish students have faced antisemitic taunting. watch nowThe Bitcoin network on Friday evening completed its fourth "halving," reducing the rewards earned by miners to 3.125 bitcoins from 6.25. After the 2012, 2016 and 2020 halvings, the bitcoin price ran up about 93x, 30x and 8x, respectively, from its halving day price to its cycle top. Hash rates are a measure of the computational power used to process transactions on the bitcoin network. "The market so far has seen bitcoin mining stocks as mere BTC proxies, in absence of bitcoin ETFs," said Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani. "[The] Bitcoin halving is already partially priced in by the market and we do not expect prices to increase significantly following the halving event," the firm's Marion Laboure said in a note Thursday, adding that it "has been widely anticipated in advance due to the nature of the Bitcoin algorithm."

In the current quarter, American Eagle expects sales to be up by a mid-single digit percentage, which is in line with estimates of up 5%, according to LSEG. During the Covid pandemic, American Eagle spent hundreds of millions of dollars acquiring a number of shipping and distribution companies that eventually became Quiet Platforms, the retailer's internal logistics branch. Last spring, American Eagle acknowledged that Quiet Platforms wasn't performing as it had expected. To increase profits, American Eagle plans to amplify its brands by growing its namesake banner, boost Aerie's expansion and develop the activewear assortment at its Offline banner.

So it was surprising that the end of Sunday night’s season premiere of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” — look out, spoilers coming — took pretty, pretty, pretty clear aim at the major voting law Georgia passed in 2021. Larry David, who as the show’s curmudgeonly star is better known for breaking social norms than actual laws, travels to Atlanta in the episode. “Sir, in the navy blazer, put your hands in the air,” an officer says to a confused Mr. David. In another episode, the cantankerous Mr. David realizes that wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat around liberal Los Angeles gets him out of many unwanted meetings and interactions. In an interview with TheWrap, one of the show’s executive producers said that its writing team had decided to somehow incorporate the Georgia law back when it passed two years ago.

The more than 600 SpaceX injuries Reuters documented represent only a portion of the total case count, a figure that is not publicly available. SpaceX injury data reporting failures SpaceX facilities failed to submit injury data annually, as required by regulators, for most years since 2016. Workers welded rocket parts up to 12 hours a day, six days a week, often in temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the SpaceX workers said. The accident occurred when he and other SpaceX employees were being transferred between two vessels.

Girl math is a viral Tiktok trend where women justify spending with their discretionary income. Girl math is often about quality of life decisions and the impact of your spending's value. All over TikTok, "girl math" is being used to justify almost any purchase, from everyday things like $5 coffees to big-ticket items like concert tickets. While everyone's version of girl math is different, it typically involves rationalizing your spending in often illogical ways. On TikTok, there are hundreds of videos tagged as "girl math," with some amassing millions of views.
