Lahore, Pakistan AP —Pakistani police fired tear gas and charged at student protesters who ransacked a college building Thursday, as anger spread over an alleged on-campus rape, prompting the government to shut schools, colleges and universities for two days. Tensions have been high on college campuses since reports of the alleged rape in the eastern city of Lahore spread on social media, and protests have broken out in four cities. Thursday’s violence started when hundreds of students demonstrated outside a campus in the city of Rawalpindi in Punjab province. They also arrested a man who is accused of spreading misinformation on social media about the alleged rape and inciting students to violence. But Punjab police on Thursday urged people to share any information about the alleged rape.

Navarro’s stint in prison comes as Trump himself has yet to face criminal consequences for the various crimes he’s been accused of committing. Navarro made a last-ditch bid for a Supreme Court intervention that would put off his self-surrender to prison. Yet the number of times the DOJ agreed to prosecute a witness for contempt of Congress are extremely low. He was charged in June 2022 with two counts of contempt of Congress and was found guilty on both counts last September. He was no longer in the White House during the period the House committee was probing.

With Palestinians in Gaza in dire need, any aid is welcome, but aid groups say maritime and air-dropped aid should be complementary to land deliveries, not a substitute. CNN —The war in Sudan is “triggering the world’s largest hunger crisis,” with more than 25 million people “trapped in a spiral” of food insecurity, a United Nations agency has warned. The war, which has also created the world’s largest displacement crisis, according to the UN, has left 18 million people “acutely food insecure” in Sudan and millions more in neighboring South Sudan and Chad. “Twenty years ago, Darfur was the world’s largest hunger crisis, and the world rallied to respond. Nearly a year into a war that has sent Sudan to the verge of collapse, the vast majority of its people are going hungry, the UN's World Food Programme says. Armed transfers that must stop,” she said, remarking that the international community “is not doing nearly enough” to address the crisis.

Haley laid out a stinging character study of the former president in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday. Grouping Trump with President Joe Biden, she said it was “absurd” that the country would be stuck with two 80-year-old candidates. In recent campaign events, Haley has also questioned Trump’s morality and capacity to tell right from wrong. They had to find a way to exploit Trump’s greatest general election liabilities in the knowledge that most Republican voters had no interest in hearing about them. South Carolina state Rep. Bill Taylor hit back at some of Haley’s recent criticisms that Trump only thinks of himself.

New York CNN —“Shoplifting in Great Department Stores.” “The Shoplifting Profession.” “No Mercy to Shoplifters.”These headlines could be from articles today. While shoplifting has seemingly never been a bigger problem than it is now, shoplifting has long captured the public’s attention. Angela Weiss/AFP/Getty ImagesAlthough shoplifting increased in some cities during the first half of the year compared to pre-pandemic levels, there is no clear national rise in shoplifting, according to a new analysis by the Council on Criminal Justice, a nonpartisan criminal justice policy organization. Middle-class women shoplifting in Victorian Britain during the 1800s were the focus of an early panic over shoplifting. Fears spread over middle-class women shoplifting during the early years of department stores.

For years Bashir's startup had been building muscle around these capabilities; now it had an eager audience. Eating at acclaimed restaurants is fine, but Bashir prefers the more-intimate affairs at tech executives' homes because, she says, "you can stay longer."

It seems nothing less than a miracle that so many manuscripts from the era endure to our day. These heroes are the subjects of Christopher de Hamel’s lovingly written and lavishly illustrated “The Manuscripts Club: The People Behind a Thousand Years of Medieval Manuscripts.” Crack the spine of any volume by de Hamel and you will step into a world of bookish wonderment. One of the most eminent living scholars and catalogers of medieval European manuscripts, de Hamel is also their greatest champion, having devoted his career to revealing their treasures and mysteries to scholarly and public audiences alike. Alongside his catalogs of private and public collections, he has published studies and guidebooks on a variety of topics. “Scribes and Illuminators” (1992) is still widely taught to students in paleography and codicology (the sciences of old handwriting and old manuscript books, respectively), while “The Book: A History of the Bible” (2001) surveys the history of the sacred Hebrew and Christian texts through the lens of their myriad surviving manuscripts.

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” requires no critical endorsement. His slim 1925 novel still takes up permanent residence in the book bags of students across the nation. “The Great Gatsby,” now playing at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, N.J., replicates its literary prototype. Jay Gatsby (Jeremy Jordan) is the elusive seigneur of a mansion in West Egg, a fictional Long Island town. Though the musical remains largely faithful to that plot, Kait Kerrigan, the book writer, takes liberties with the point of view.

GENEVA (AP) — Voters in a southern Swiss region on Sunday rejected a plan to allow large solar parks on their sun-baked Alpine mountainsides as part of the federal government’s push to develop renewable energy sources. The rejection doesn't torpedo solar parks entirely if the private sector wants to develop them. At stake is up to 60% of financing for big solar parks. The federal energy department estimates that about 40 to 50 proposals for large solar parks have been made across the country. Overall, Swiss federal authorities have set a target of 2 billion GWh in new solar energy under legislation promoting development of solar energy, adopted in September 2022.

Brazil’s Congress opened an inquiry into the matter, which will eventually produce a written report and may suggest that prosecutors bring criminal charges. The committee has called former Bolsonaro aides to testify about an alleged conspiracy to overturn electoral results which they have denied. Opposition lawmakers have sought to turn up evidence that the government was to blame for the rioting because it failed to provide adequate security in the capital. Some opposition lawmakers have focused on a portion of security footage showing him taking pictures to suggest the scenes were staged. “We’re here today at an anti-climax, listening to a working journalist who was taking photographs,” said pro-government lawmaker Rogerio Correia.

One of the most prolific thieves in the South Lake Tahoe, Calif., area was “safely immobilized” by tranquilizer dart and apprehended Friday morning, according to state officials: a 400-pound black bear that the public had come to know as Hank the Tank. The captured bear was responsible for at least 21 DNA-confirmed home break-ins and extensive property damage in Tahoe Keys dating back to early 2022, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said in a news release. Based on visual observations made by residents during a string of rummaging and ransacking incidents dating back to 2021, the public initially thought “Hank the Tank” was one male bear. “I guess they all technically are ‘Hank the Tank,’” Jordan Traverso, a spokeswoman for the department, said. She said the “other Hanks” have not “presented themselves as problems” this year in Tahoe Keys, a gated community about 190 miles northeast of San Francisco.

Former Vice President Mike Pence said he's not concerned about Trump's rhetoric inciting violence. CNN's Dana Bash responded by noting some Trump supporters called for Pence to be hanged. The former vice president said he was "infuriated" by the violence on January 6 but argued that the ransacking of the US Capitol was carried out by a small minority of Trump supporters. After CNN played the recording of Trump's remarks, Pence said he could "hear my former running mate's frustration in his voice." Around the same time, according to videos posted from inside the US Capitol, some Trump supporters began chanting, "Hang Mike Pence."

CNN —A man dressed in the yellow and green of the Brazilian flag walks towards a glass table inside the Planalto Presidential Palace in Brasilia with a metal rod in his hand. The footage provides new insight into one of the darkest days in in the life of Brazil’s young democracy. It also appears to bolster the claims of those who accused police of failing to act to stop protesters from breaking into the Presidential Palace, among other government buildings. The newly obtained footage shows police forces seemingly retreating as supporters of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro – who was ousted in a vote last fall – march on the palace. “To liken my behaviour to that Major distributing waters to protesters is absurd,” he told Brazilian broadcaster Globo.

BRASILIA, Feb 17 (Reuters) - There will be no "witch-hunt" to root out members of Brazil's military who may have potentially been involved in the Jan. 8 Brasilia riots, the country's top military prosecutor said in an interview, pledging to follow due process to mete out justice. For months ahead of the Oct. 30 Brazilian presidential election, far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro sought to enlist military support for his baseless claims of electoral fraud. There has been mounting public pressure for anyone in Brazil's military accused of involvement in the riots to be tried in civil courts. However, Brazil's army brass are unhappy about efforts for military wrongdoing to be tried by the Supreme Court, and want to keep litigation in military courts, according to sources familiar with the matter. Fifteen military investigations related to Jan. 8 have been opened, according to the military attorney general's office.
