House Speaker Mike Johnson said Sunday that House Ethics Committee's probe into Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald Trump's pick for U.S. attorney general, is a "Pandora's box" and said the report from it should not be released. The House Ethics Committee was investigating allegations that Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct, illicit drug use and other wrongdoing. I don't think we want the House Ethics Committee using all of its vast resources and powers to go after private citizens, and that's what Matt Gaetz is now," Johnson said. Gaetz's resignation effectively ends the Ethics Committee probe because the panel's reach is limited to members of the House. On Friday, a lawyer for a woman told the Ethics committee she saw Gaetz have sex with a minor, NBC News reported.

In today’s edition, senior national political reporter Sahil Kapur examines the way Democrats can still exert some power in Donald Trump's Washington. How Democrats can still flex power in Trump’s WashingtonBy Sahil KapurRepublicans have won full control of Washington, but Democrats will retain two key levers of power to shape legislative outcomes in Donald Trump’s second term. That margin is slimming further as Trump plucks House members for administration jobs. The last two years showed how chaotic and dysfunctional this GOP-controlled House can be, even when the stakes are low. The Ethics Committee has jurisdiction over only sitting House members.

WASHINGTON — Republican senators are preparing for a robust vetting of Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald Trump's pick to lead the Justice Department, with a keen interest in details from a House Ethics Committee investigation into the former congressman from Florida. The Ethics Committee has jurisdiction only over sitting House members. Many Republican senators, including members of the GOP-led Judiciary Committee that will oversee Gaetz’s nomination for attorney general, said they'll want to see the details of the House Ethics investigation into Gaetz. But Gaetz's resignation complicates things, and the House committee hasn't indicated what it will do. Asked directly if he'd vote to confirm Gaetz, Cramer said the Florida congressman would have to make it through the Judiciary Committee first.

The surprise announcement Wednesday, and Gaetz's swift resignation from Congress, also drew attention to a House Ethics Committee probe into allegations that Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct, illicit drug use and other wrongdoing. "I think there should not be any limitation on the Senate Judiciary committee's investigation, including whatever the House Ethics Committee is generated," Cornyn told reporters on Capitol Hill. We would support the House Ethics Committee immediately releasing their report," John Clune, a partner at Hutchinson Black and Cook, wrote on X. Gaetz's resignation effectively ends the Ethics Committee probe, because the panel's reach is limited to members of the House. The Ethics panel was slated to meet Thursday behind closed doors, a source familiar with the situation told NBC.

When officials meet to decide where interest rates should be, they don’t consult the president and other elected officials — and for good reason. That’s because, as one former Federal Reserve chair famously said, central bankers’ job is to remove the punchbowl right when the party is just getting started. I feel that strongly,” Trump said at a press conference in August, referring to the Fed’s interest rate decisions. Lowering interest rates too soon could’ve risked reigniting inflation, which is currently just a tenth of a percentage point higher than the Fed’s 2% target. That’s why countries with independent central banks generally have lower inflation, Fed Chair Jerome Powell told reporters in September after central bankers lowered rates by a half point.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Ben Cardin was targeted by a caller who posed as a former top Ukrainian official during a recent Zoom call, according to a notice circulated to Senate offices and obtained by NBC News on Wednesday. According to the notice, the caller's questioning was "likely trying to bate the Senator into commenting on a political candidate." Cardin and his staff ended the call, the notice said, adding that Cardin's office contacted the State Department, which confirmed the caller was not Kuleba. Cardin referred to the caller as a "malign actor" in a statement about the incident his office released Wednesday night. NBC News reported this month that the Justice Department plans to file criminal charges in connection with the hacking of Trump’s campaign, according to two law enforcement officials.

While Trump insists he's sticking with Vance, the senator's poor polling combined with Vice President Kamala Harris' momentum has led some to ask: Could Trump replace Vance? The Democratic and Republican National Committees have separate rules governing how they fill vacancies of presidential or vice presidential nominees. Related stories"I think sometimes what people forget is that people start voting in September," Dacey told Business Insider. It would be, he said, "extraordinarily disruptive" both logistically and politically to replace Vance as the vice presidential nominee. Vance, the author of "Hillbilly Elegy" and a former venture capitalist, has been outspoken about his views on family and birth rates. "We should worry that in America, family formation, our birth rates, a ton of indicators of family health have collapsed," Vance said in 2021 remarks. But Vance's actions as a senator suggest some support for Democratic policies, such as an expansion of the child tax credit. Right-wing lawmakers are ramping up their threats to remove Speaker Mike Johnson from his role after Johnson’s supporters pushed him to make it harder to oust him from the speakership. The House is finished with floor action for the day, which means that the earliest that Greene could make a motion to oust Johnson would be on Friday. At one point, Johnson was surrounded on the House floor by a number of far-right lawmakers in a heated discussion.
