Hundreds of demonstrators have taken to the streets in Christian neighborhoods of Damascus after a Christmas tree burning heightened fears that the overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad could presage crackdowns on Syria's religious minorities. A Christmas tree is set alight in Hama on Monday. Because of its roots in radical Islamist movements, HTS remains a globally designated terrorist group. Al-Sharaa has also attempted to move away from his past as a jihadist leader with links to both the Islamic State terrorist group and Al Qaeda. Protesters carry crosses during a demonstration against the burning of the Christmas tree in Hama on Tuesday.

Analysts said the president-elect's latest threats could presage tariffs on other countries' exports and escalate into a full-scale trade war. "There has been a view among some investors that Trump's tariff talk was a negotiating tactic, a threat rather than a promise. London CNN —Is it a prelude to a wider attack or the totality of the message to Hezbollah? The risk of widespread war with Israel again has become a pressing reality since the October 7 attacks. It places Hezbollah, however, in another unenviable moment of frailty – plunged into chaos, with great pressure upon them to project strength again. Hezbollah will still be able to inflict significant damage upon Israel if a full-scale battle erupts. But Israel may have decided too cleanly that Hezbollah seeks to avoid war, and therefore can be goaded repeatedly.

How to Cope When the Markets Panic
  + stars: | 2024-08-09 | by ( Jeff Sommer | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Time can speed up radically in the markets. Global stock and bond markets rose and fell and rose again in cascading waves, moving across oceans and time zones. Fears of a recession in the United States mounted, and the Federal Reserve came under pressure to cut interest rates and spur growth. Late in the week, it was almost as if the seemingly calamitous market whirlwind had never happened. What we just experienced wasn’t all that severe, on a historical basis, at least not in the United States — but it could well presage deeper losses down the road.

Before Andreessen and Horowitz formed their venture-capital firm in 2009, Andreessen was an incisive observer of Silicon Valley. Big Andreesen (meaning the current bloated billionaire model) also contradicts Little Andreessen (the earlier, leaner blogger) on the issue of regulation. The reason, he now claims, is that government used to leave Silicon Valley alone. He and his fellow Silicon Valley investor-class billionaires have been sliding rightward for years. It's that I didn't see that this is where Silicon Valley was always headed.

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia and North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, revived a Cold War-era mutual defense pledge between their nations on Wednesday, as the Kremlin deepened its security relationship with North Korea and vowed solidarity in challenging the United States. Neither Russia nor North Korea immediately released the text of the new treaty. But Mr. Putin, speaking at a joint briefing in Pyongyang after the two leaders signed the document, said the pact called for the nations to aid one another in the event of “aggression” against either country. The pledge of mutual assistance is likely to further alarm Washington and its allies. It could presage not only deeper support by North Korea for Russia’s war in Ukraine but also greater support from Moscow in aiding Mr. Kim’s quest for better-functioning nuclear weapons, missiles, submarines and satellites — a development that would increase anxiety among America’s Asian allies, especially South Korea.

Earlier this year, I wrote about a friend who was attacked and thrown to the ground on a September afternoon, while she was walking toward Borough Hall in Brooklyn to go to the post office. She was on the phone with her mother when a man, whose erratic behavior she had noticed in the distance, pushed her into the street, leaving her with bruises, a chipped tooth and fear new to her after decades of living in New York. At the time, it did not seem as though the assault might be part of a dark emerging trend. But the incident would presage many others — instances in which women in New York were randomly punched on the street in the middle of the day. A few days before the announcement, a 9-year-old girl standing with her mother was punched in the face by a man at Grand Central Station.

This has been a very good year for Letitia James. Over the past month, Ms. James, New York’s attorney general, has racked up hard-fought victories over two formidable opponents. First, in mid-February, her office won a staggering $454 million judgment against former President Donald J. Trump in a civil fraud trial stemming from accusations that he had inflated his net worth. A week later, Ms. James, a Democrat, prevailed again, this time against the National Rifle Association and its longtime leader, Wayne LaPierre, who was found personally liable for more than $5 million in misused funds. Ms. James, who won a second term handily in 2022, is seemingly reveling in her reputation as an antagonist of right-wing political figures, some of whom have reacted to her public pronouncements with fury.

For the people who run elections at thousands of local offices nationwide, 2024 was never going to be an easy year. But the recent anonymous mailing of powder-filled envelopes to election offices in five states offers new hints of how hard it could be. The letters, sent to offices in Washington State, Oregon, Nevada, California and Georgia this month, are under investigation by the U.S. And they presage the pressure-cooker environment that election officials will face next year in a contest for the White House that could chart the future course of American democracy. “Every way in which our elections are administered is going to be tested somewhere, at some time, during 2024.”

Wall Street analysts and economists have always had a tendency to fall in love with their forecasts. This stubbornness helps explain why Wall Street is having an exceptionally hard time letting go of the idea that a recession is just around the corner. Despite the year-plus in which analysts have been arguing that a recession is imminent, none of the arguments behind the predictions stand up to scrutiny. CNN —The world just got a hint of a tantalizing but possibly even more dangerous future without Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Western stakes in the Ukraine war rose significantly as a result. There’s now no doubt that the war Putin unleashed to wipe Ukraine off the map poses an existential threat to his political survival. This would be good news for the West, which has bankrolled and armed the country’s fight for its life. After this weekend, this new reality will require the West to once again examine its balancing act to save Ukraine.

DAKAR, May 8 (Reuters) - The presidential bid of a popular Senegalese opposition politician was thrown into doubt on Monday after a court of appeal handed him a heavier suspended sentence in a libel case, triggering a small protest in Dakar that riot police quelled with tear gas. But Monday's appeal hearing extended the suspended sentence to six months, said lawyer Boubacar Cissé, who represents the minister. "If this sentence is final, there is a good chance that his candidacy will be inadmissible," Diaw said. He has six days to file an appeal with the Supreme Court. Aside from the latest ruling, Sonko is also charged with raping a beauty salon employee in 2021 and making deaths threats against her.
