Investigators say they have mounting evidence against Luigi Mangione, 26, connecting him to the assassination of Brian Thompson on December 4. Mangione was denied bail on Tuesday and is fighting his extradition to New York, where he faces five charges, including second-degree murder, in Thompson’s killing. If convicted of second-degree murder, Mangione faces at least 15 years to life in prison, while a first-degree murder charge carries a minimum of 20 years to life in prison. A second-degree murder charge – but not first-degree murder – allows the defendant an “affirmative defense,” which is essentially a “Yes, but” argument to lessen the seriousness of the charge to first-degree manslaughter, according to Shapiro. Mangione’s arrest is only the first piece of the case against him, according to Ken Corey, former NYPD chief of department.

CNN —David Knezevich, the South Florida businessman accused in the February disappearance of his estranged wife in Spain, is now charged with her murder. A federal grand jury in Miami indicted Knezevich, 36, Wednesday on charges of kidnapping resulting in death, foreign domestic violence resulting in death, and foreign murder of a US national. If convicted of the newest charges, Knezevich could face the death penalty. Prosecutors said Knezevich traveled from Miami to Turkey and later to his native home of Serbia, where he rented a car and drove to Spain in late January. The complaint said the vehicle’s license plates were stolen from another vehicle on the street in Madrid where Henao was living.

Aug 2 (Reuters) - A federal jury on Wednesday voted to sentence Robert Bowers to death for killing 11 worshippers at Pittsburgh's Tree of Life synagogue in 2018, the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S. history, the New York Times reported. Bowers was convicted of 63 counts, including 11 counts of obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death. Two weeks ago, during the first phase of the sentencing portion of the trial, the jury found Bowers to be eligible for the death penalty. CNN —Tiger Woods’ ex-girlfriend Erica Herman has dropped her lawsuit filed in October 2022, which alleged that a trust owned by the 47-year-old golfer violated the Florida Residential Landlord Tenant Act by breaking an oral tenancy agreement, and which sought damages “in excess of $30,000,000,” according to court filings and previous CNN reporting. Herman dismissed her complaint without prejudice “pending the resolution” of her appeal in a more recent complaint, aimed at nullifying an NDA, that she said required “confidential arbitration in all disputes between” Herman and Woods. CNN has reached out to attorneys for Tiger Woods and Erica Herman for comment regarding the dropping of the $30 million lawsuit. The October filing had alleged that Woods’ Jupiter Island Irrevocable Homestead Trust unlawfully brought Herman’s tenancy at the couple’s property on the Hobe Sound, Florida, to an end. Last month, the jury found Bowers, 50, guilty of dozens of federal hate crimes in the trial at the U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh in western Pennsylvania. Federal prosecutors had charged Bowers with 63 counts, including 11 counts of obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death. In the final phase of the sentencing portion of the trial, both prosecutors and defense attorneys will have the chance to make arguments on whether Bowers deserves the death penalty. In their arguments in support of making Bowers eligible for the death penalty, prosecutors said that he had the necessary intent and premeditation to qualify for the sentence.

CNN —The suspect in the stabbing death of CashApp founder Bob Lee was also accused of stabbing two teenagers in 2005, according to documents uncovered by the San Francisco Chronicle. Nima Momeni, 38, is accused of fatally stabbing Lee in April in San Francisco’s Rincon Hill neighborhood. Momeni was also cited but not charged in a 2022 domestic battery incident, according to an April report from the San Francisco Chronicle. An autopsy report showed Lee, the 43-year-old mobile payment app founder, sustained knife wounds that pierced his heart and lung. According to San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, Lee and Momeni knew each other and were together throughout the evening leading up to the killing.
