The number was higher among young adults, with 37% of people ages 18 to 29 saying they turn to influencers for news. Pew surveyed 10,000 adults and analyzed 500 news influencers, which it defined as individuals who regularly post about current events and have over 100,000 followers on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X or YouTube. “And these influencers have really reached new levels of attention and prominence this year amid the presidential election.”The rise of social media influencers, and in particular news-focused creators, has been slowly embraced by politicians in recent years. The Republican convention in Milwaukee hosted more than 70 influencers as part of a content creator program. Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris both appeared on podcasts hosted by popular online personalities ahead of the election.

New York CNN —Young American adults are increasingly getting their news from social media influencers, a majority of whom are men and lean to the right, according to a new study from the Pew Research Center. On Facebook, there were three times as many explicitly conservative news influencers (39% to 13%), and on Instagram conservatives outnumbered liberals, 30-25%. “Many Republicans have long believed that social media sites censor conservative viewpoints. Social media influencers differ from trained journalists in how they report facts, often weaving their own views into current events or presenting opinions as reportable facts. The gender gap was found across most social media platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, X, and Instagram, where men outnumbered women two to one.

What can news outlets do to regain trust and appeal to new audiences without alienating existing readers and viewers? For the past week, CNN’s media team has been receiving feedback from readers of the Reliable Sources newsletter. Mainstream media outlets have been losing public trust for decades, particularly among Republicans, but also among Democrats and independents. Maybe, CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan commented last week, the media collectively spent “too much time obsessing about polling (where did that get us?) As long as President-elect Donald Trump keeps repeating lies and raising controversies, the press will be seen as a hostile force by many Trump voters.

Let's call it the YouTube election

And I'm very confident — based on my non-scientific poll of my teenage sons, who inhale YouTube — that those numbers are way, way bigger for young people. But what was most interesting about the election was the way the Trump campaign spent the summer embracing YouTube personalities. Edison Research says YouTube — including both regular, free YouTube and YouTube's paid YouTube Music service — is the most popular way for people to listen to (or watch) podcasts. And, unlike platforms like Instagram and TikTok — podcasters can get a meaningful share of the advertising revenue generated by their YouTube audiences. We should think about it as a podcast plus a YouTube election," he says.

An NBC News poll at that time showed that at least 20% of Black men would support Trump — an alarming number for Democrats. Harris introduced an Opportunity Agenda for Black Men, outlining what her administration would do to support that voting constituency that seemed movable. But that effort was one of the few that addressed Black men directly, he added. Black men younger than 30 and older than 65 were the most likely to support Harris at 78% and 87%, respectively. We must avoid casting Black men as scapegoats and saviors.”Jones added that the numbers should be considered with nuance.

In the final weeks of the campaign, Trump kept supporters at a Michigan rally waiting for hours after he detoured to Texas to record Rogan’s show. Some comics online did not specifically call out Hinchcliffe’s jokes at the rally but shared broader thoughts about comedians’ crossing the line. On an August episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Rogan said Trump should hire Hinchcliffe to “write bangers” for him on the road. But Hinchcliffe’s joke about Puerto Rico landed poorly across both political parties. While most comedians did not come to Hinchcliffe’s defense, “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart said such jokes should have been expected from a comedian like Hinchcliffe. But with Hinchcliffe’s joke, she said, “it almost just felt like he was saying, ‘I don’t like Puerto Ricans,’ which is so clearly offensive.

Much of Trump's closing message is focused on illegal immigration, one of the centerpieces of his campaign. The interview, which was widely hyped by Trump and his supporters, was a snapshot of his, at best, untraditional attempt at a campaign closing message and, at worst, his tendency to step on his own policy pushes. The discipline of the Harris campaign contrasts with that of Trump, whose late-cycle rallies have maintained the sort of rambling, unfocused structure he has long been known for. That dynamic can be seen even in his final speeches as Trump tries to close out his third presidential campaign. “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign,” Danielle Alvarez, a senior adviser, said in a statement shortly after the joke was made.

Trump’s campaign also expects to draw huge, raucous crowds, and command outsized media attention – which would pay dividends across the political map. It’s the same reason Trump’s campaign has had the former president sit down with popular YouTube streamers and podcasters. Harris’ campaign has employed a similar strategy in recent weeks, targeting specific groups of voters with her appearances on podcasts and other interviews.
