This was a day to forget for the United States men’s soccer team. As seen from the graphic below, Morocco dominated the game in key statistical metrics, ending the United States’ hopes of a medal. Thus concludes the United States men’s two-tournament summer. Tanner Tessmann was at the heart of most of the United States’ positive passages. It won’t inspire many hearts and minds, but the United States did exactly that in the first half against Morocco — save for one ill-advised wag of Harriel’s leg.

CNN —A Spanish tourist was crushed to death by a herd of elephants inside South Africa’s Pilanesberg National Park after he left his vehicle to take a close-up photo of the breeding animals, local police said. Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia identified the tourist as Carlos Luna, whom it said was from Zaragoza. The Pilanesberg Game Reserve is South Africa’s fourth-largest park and a popular tourist destination. In 2019, a suspected poacher was attacked and killed by an elephant, and his body eaten by lions in the northeastern Kruger National Park, authorities said at the time. Three months ago, an elderly American woman was killed after an elephant charged at a vehicle transporting tourists inside Zambia’s largest national park.

CNN —Two lion brothers, including one with an amputated leg, were spotted making a record-breaking night swim through treacherous waters in Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park. Researchers believe that the nearly mile-long (1.6-kilometer) crossing of the crocodile-infested Kazinga Channel is the longest documented swim by lions. They were likely in search of females after losing dangerous fights to another group of male lions — and to avoid humans while doing so, according to the researchers. The two big cats set out for what the researchers call the longest-recorded swim ever taken by lions. The scientists describe their findings in a paper that has been accepted for publication in the journal Ecology and Evolution.
