The drug company Lykos Therapeutics had spent much of this year expecting to vault to meteoric heights. It had sent an application to the Food and Drug Administration seeking approval to use MDMA to treat post-traumatic stress disorder. It was the capstone to months of increasingly loud concerns being voiced over the quality of Lykos’s clinical trials. Lykos has spent years conducting clinical trials testing whether MDMA-assisted psychotherapy could alleviate the symptoms of PTSD. Its most recent drug trial showed that more than 86 percent of people treated had a measurable reduction in symptom severity.

DENVER — Former Colorado clerk Tina Peters, the first local election official to be charged with a security breach after the 2020 election as unfounded conspiracy theories swirled, was found guilty by a jury on most charges Monday. Peters, a one-time hero to election deniers, was accused of using someone else’s security badge to give an expert affiliated with My Pillow chief executive Mike Lindell access to the Mesa County election system and deceiving other officials about that person’s identity. Lindell is a prominent promoter of false claims that voting machines were manipulated to steal the election from Donald Trump. Peters stood next to one of her attorneys at the defense table as the verdict was read in a quiet courtroom. In a post on the social media platform X after the verdict, Peters accused Colorado-based Dominion Voting Systems, which made her county’s election system, as well as lawyers for state election officials of stealing votes.

A federal regulator signaled it would take a tougher stance with seller-financed home sales on Tuesday, saying that they were subject to many of the same consumer protections as a home bought with a more traditional mortgage. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau released an advisory opinion that put sellers on notice that it would not tolerate the predatory practices that have come to dominate the so-called contract for deed market. These seller-backed sales have become popular in poor neighborhoods with rundown single-family homes, where mortgages are hard to come by. Contract for deeds are multiyear installment contracts in which the seller retains the title to a home until the buyer makes a final payment. These risky deals often have above-market interest rates and put the burden of repairs on the would-be buyer.

Tim Walz of Minnesota defended himself against Republican attacks on his military service record on Tuesday in his first solo campaign event since being named Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate. “I am damn proud of my service to this country,” Mr. Walz said. “And I firmly believe you should never denigrate another person’s service record.”Mr. Walz retired from the National Guard in 2005 after 24 years, a year before his artillery battalion deployed to Iraq. At the time of his retirement, soldiers knew a deployment was possible, but the actual orders came months after Mr. Walz, then 41, had already left to run for a seat in the House of Representatives. On Tuesday, he framed that decision as another act of service.

Allegations of the sexual abuse of Palestinian prisoners by members of the Israeli military are “horrific,” the United States has said, after a graphic video broadcast on Israeli news added fuel to mounting criticism of the U.S. ally’s conduct in the war in Gaza. “We have seen the video, and reports of sexual abuse of detainees are horrific,” Miller said, adding that the reports should be “fully” investigated by the Israeli government. “There ought to be zero tolerance for sexual abuse, rape of any detainee, period,” he added. “No circumstances, however exceptional, can ever justify torture or ill-treatment.”Israeli soldiers load naked Palestinian prisoners onto a bus in a photo sent to NBC News by Mustafa Barghouti, Palestinian Legislative Council member. But the new law has also provoked questions about how it will be applied, whether it can effectively protect women from sexual exploitation and whether it risks criminalizing break-ups. Audrey Dmello, director of Majlis Law, a women’s rights NGO in India, supports the new law. She argues “promise to marry” rape cases are under-reported and needed to be tackled through legislation. “Having such a law gives women validity as to what happened to them,” she told CNN. Potential concernsThe new law distinguishes “promise to marry” cases from rape – but some lawyers say the parameters are still vague.

However, just because baking soda is produced from natural ingredients doesn’t mean it’s safe to ingest without regulation, she added. The primary way baking soda could be helpful for issues such as acid reflux is by neutralizing acid. There has also been some evidence to suggest baking soda may also slow the progression of kidney disease. Fitness studies have typically dosed within the range of 0.2 to 0.5 grams of baking soda per kilogram of body weight — meaning a person weighing about 59 kilograms, or 130 pounds, might use around a tablespoon of baking soda at a minimum. Baking soda supplementation isn’t the only way to alleviate acid-induced health problems.

A renewed spotlight on protecting access to birth control may not help women who are already struggling to find affordable contraception in some states with the strictest abortion laws. Few community clinics have the amount of money needed to cover birth control each month, McCollum said. But over-the-counter birth control pills haven’t reached many women in rural areas. According to an NBC News review of police hiring laws in Illinois, Grayson’s hiring did not appear to have violated state or local police hiring policies. And an NBC News review of hiring practices around the country shows that there is a patchwork of hiring standards that vary from state to state and from community to community. Experts say the hiring standards in many small law enforcement agencies are often lower than those of large city agencies. In Illinois, in addition to its state law, city councils and county commissions can also set their own stricter hiring rules. Using the California hiring standards as a model, Guller tells his clients to send seasoned investigators out to interview a person’s former romantic partners, neighbors, employers and even patrons at their favorite bars.
