The wife of a California inmate will receive $5.6 million after being sexually violated during a strip search when she tried to visit her husband in prison, her attorneys said Monday. Of the $5.6 million settlement, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation will pay $3.6 million and the rest will be paid by the other defendants, which include two correctional officers, a doctor, and the Adventist Health Tehachapi Valley hospital. Despite no contraband being found in any of her belongings or her body, Cardenas was denied her visit with her husband. California prisons have faced an ongoing problem of sexual abuse and misconduct, with the the U.S. Justice Department announcing it had opened an investigation into allegations that correctional officers systematically sexually abused incarcerated women at two state-run California prisons. Earlier this year the federal Bureau of Prisons announced it will close a women’s prison in Northern California known as the “rape club” after an Associated Press investigation exposed rampant sexual abuse by correctional officers.

Poor Justin Timberlake … are not three words I could have imagined typing 25, or 15 or even five years ago. Sprinkling salt on the wound, Page Six reported that the arresting officer didn’t know who the perp was. Streams of Britney Spears’ song “Criminal” spiked. The misery of celebrities always occasions a fire hose of schadenfreude, but this seems next level. Where, I found myself wondering as I scrolled and LOL’ed, are the fans rallying to his defense?

REUTERS/Regis Duvignau/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsPARIS/LONDON, Oct 19 (Reuters) - French spirits maker Pernod Ricard (PERP.PA) said on Thursday it expected to grow sales over the coming year, despite a difficult first quarter marred by big drops in sales in the United States and China. Pernod struggled as a tough economy in China dampened demand and amid inventory adjustments in the United States, where sales are also normalising after a post-COVID surge. "I am confident that we can deliver broad-based and diversified sales growth in FY24," Ricard said in a statement. But, he continued, it's not clear to what degree there will have been improvement in the economic environment hurting Pernod's performance right now.

Don't expect any change, Biden advisers say, until after decisions are handed down in those trials. However, sustaining that strategy, during the most contentious and consequential judicial actions in U.S. presidential history, will be severely tested in the coming months, political strategists say. Expect Trump to use a series of criminal trials from New York City to Georgia and Florida in the months ahead to fuel a campaign deeply rooted in grievance politics. The White House and the reelection campaign are content to use the upcoming months - when Republicans are embroiled in a nasty nominating race - to pitch Americans on the success of Biden's economic policies, interviews show. Instead, the reelection campaign will try to draw attention to differences between the two candidates, officials say.

Donald Trump might make new campaign merch soon — featuring his Georgia mugshot. But New York doesn't make mugshots public like Georgia does, so the Trump campaign had to get creative. Immediately following that first New York indictment, the Trump campaign started advertising a new T-shirt featuring a clearly fake mugshot of the former President emblazoned with the words "NOT GUILTY." (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)Now that he has the public mugshot he wanted, Trump's team might swap out the fake mugshot on his campaign merch for the real one. On Thursday, Trump rolled out a fundraising plea entirely based on the Georgia indictment and his arrest.

“The very topic of menopause has been taboo, particularly in the workplace, potentially further exacerbating the psychological burden of menopause symptoms,” the Mayo researchers noted. A 57-year old woman who has worked for years in the construction industry said she first experienced severe menopausal symptoms in her previous job. Menopausal symptoms might not be as troublesome at work if women could access more reliable information and care from their regular doctors. The plan lets any employee take up to 10 days off to address self-care issues of any kind, which the company notes can include dealing with menopausal symptoms. It was an attempt to find a way to help employees deal with their symptoms in ways they needed, Falcione told CNN.

WASHINGTON — I first met Rudy Giuliani in 1986 when I was a Times reporter writing about corruption cases in New York. Gotham was awash in so much municipal sleeze, a detective joked that city employees were streaming into the F.B.I. Giuliani, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, got in a kerfuffle with Robert Morgenthau, the storied Manhattan district attorney who was a model for the D.A. in “Law & Order,” because Rudy considered the local prosecutor to be superfluous, so he wasn’t sharing information. Giuliani, 41, was already renowned as a scourge of organized crime.

Rudy Giuliani gained notoriety as a prosecutor for going after New York City mafias in the 1980s. Recently, he was indicted on RICO charges — the same prosecutorial tool he used to take down mafias. A lawyer who represented prominent New York mobsters said his clients are "fucking thrilled." "I don't want to say the language, but they really ripped Rudy a new a------," he told the outlet. Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who witnessed Giuliani's political rise in the city, also chimed in and told Politico that the indictment was "more than Shakespearean."

Remy Cointreau confident on H2 rebound after weak start to year

PARIS, July 25 (Reuters) - French spirits group Remy Cointreau (RCOP.PA) on Tuesday reported a fall in first-quarter organic sales, reflecting weaker U.S. demand, high year-ago comparables and destocking, and said it was banking on a sharp rebound in sales in the U.S. from the third quarter. The recovery in China, which makes 35% of group sales at par with the United States, was led by all cognac brands including CLUB, VSOP, XO and Louis XIII. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Remy Cointreau and rivals such as Pernod Ricard (PERP.PA) benefited from people drinking more expensive types of alcohol at home. There have, however, been signs that spirits industry growth was slowing, notably in the United States, as positive effects from the pandemic fizzle out. Some consumer goods makers have said recently that costs are starting to ease, leading lawmakers and regulators to accuse companies of keeping prices high unnecessarily. Investors have in recent months warned that consumer goods companies should start easing price increases as supply chain costs decline, worried that further hikes could hit market share and margin growth.

Trump's arrest and perp walk on Tuesday was not the spectacle of victimization he reportedly wanted. Trump's perp walk was the shortest and quickest that veteran New York lawyers have ever heard of. It was the shortest "perp walk" that New York City lawyers can remember. Richman also said that in her more than 30 years of experience, she's never seen a perp walk where the defendant was uncuffed. But another seasoned defense attorney, Arthur Aidala, thinks that Trump's speedy bare-bones booking, and his minimalist perp walk, just made good sense.
Trump, the first former U.S. president to face criminal charges, is due to be arraigned, fingerprinted and photographed at the downtown Manhattan courthouse on Tuesday. A court official said the arraignment is planned for 2:15 p.m. (1815 GMT) on Tuesday. Trump then will return to Florida and deliver remarks at Mar-a-Lago at 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday (0015 GMT on Wednesday), his office said. Other courtrooms on the courthouse's higher floors will be shut down ahead of the arraignment as part of the security precautions, a court official said. U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeted an invitation on Sunday to join her at a protest near the courthouse on Tuesday, saying "They’re not coming after President Trump, they’re coming after us, he’s just in their way."
A gag order, which could restrict how much he can say about the case, is more likely. "It is safe to assume that Trump will be released on his own recognizance," Ambrosio Rodriguez, a Los Angeles criminal defense attorney, told Insider. Los Angeles criminal defense attorney Joshua Ritter agreed, saying there was no reason to believe a judge would impose travel restrictions on Trump. Rodriguez, on the other hand, said that he did not believe a gag order would happen at all. "I don't think there's a gag order big enough to gag Trump," Rodriguez said.
Trump is likely to be fingerprinted, swabbed for the state DNA database, and photographed for his mugshot. Trump has been indicted in the Manhattan district attorney's five-year investigation into his personal and business finances, Insider reported Thursday, but he'll be treated like any defendant moving forward — with many key exceptions. "That's called 'walking it through,'" explains Diana Florence, a former white-collar crime prosecutor for the Manhattan district attorney's office. That's what typically happens in white-collar indictments, said Karen Friedman Agnifilo, a former chief assistant with the Manhattan district attorney's office. But even if Trump does need to surrender in person, Secret Service would likely give the perp walk a hard pass.
Easy Diageo succession belies new CEO’s hard job

On Tuesday, the 80 billion pound maker of Guinness and Don Julio tequila announced that Chief Operating Officer Debra Crew would replace CEO Ivan Menezes in July. Menezes has been gunning for 5%-7% annual revenue growth and a 6%-9% annual increase in operating profit over the next three years. The company operates with a 31% operating profit margin, higher than its closest rival Pernod Ricard (PERP.PA), which runs on 29%. With the price of staff, ingredients and packaging soaring, cost cutting will be hard to pull off. Diageo’s smooth succession may lay the path for a bumpy road.

European banks (.SX7P) rose 0.9% after shedding 3.8% on Friday, when Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) sparked a rout in the sector. "Many investors still don't want to touch the banking sector for fears there is more distress to come," said Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell. "Yet for every bleak situation, there is always someone who sees an opportunity to make money, hence why we're seeing a rise in the share price of many European banks today." European stocks are looking to end the first quarter of the year with gains, buoyed by signs of economic resilience and hopes that central banks are near the end of their tightening cycles. However, European banks are set to end the quarter nearly flat amid the banking sector turmoil.
