In a McKinsey survey in February, groceries represented the top category that Gen Z and millennial respondents said they planned to splurge on, outpacing restaurants, travel, and fitness; in 2017, Gen Xers were the top spenders on groceries, followed by boomers. In June, Bank of America reported that its Gen Z customers spent more at premium grocery stores than any other generation. The trend picked up steam with Gen Z. Sluggish salty snack sales have prompted questions about whether Ozempic and obesity treatments like Wegovy and Zepbound ae to blame. GLP-1 drugs have been cheered as an effective method to help patients with diabetes and obesity to manage their blood sugar levels, hunger and weight. Lieberman found that the temporary price reduction at Wal-Mart stores drove an increase in both the product's volume and sales, leading to the conclusion that snack sales were hurt by price pressures for consumers. "All said, the data suggests to us that the primary challenge facing the salty snack category is affordability and arguably not GLP-1s and evolving health & wellness trends as some people might opine," she wrote in the report. "The salty snack category raises prices faster than the rest of the grocery store, so we probably have more work to do to right-size the prices," he told CNBC in an interview.

Dacus and her husband have to stick to a tight budget: their household only receives $23 a month from SNAP. But some struggling families, like Dacus', don't receive enough help, or their income is considered too high to receive any help at all. But $23 a month in food benefits isn't even close to affording what they need to eat. SNAP benefits don't always align with household needsAmerica's SNAP program provides low-income households with money to grocery shop, and the qualifying criteria is based on the federal poverty line. Yet, many households like Dacus' don't receive the maximum because their income isn't low enough.

A blue-chip artist represented by the mega-gallery Gagosian, he founded a farm called Sky High that donates 100 percent of its food to local pantries in upstate New York. Among the infamous work from that time were the “hamster nests” Mr. Colen created with Dash Snow. More people over 65 are working as pensions disappear, people live longer, and Social Security benefits are seemingly always in peril. Business Insider spoke with several Americans of retirement age about why they are still trading their time for money. "I think older people become very invisible, and maybe it's going to take other older people to help heighten that visibility." On average, Americans who have pensions receive $25,000 annually from them; the average estimated annual Social Security benefit is $38,418 for 2024. Indeed, BI's analysis of retirement data has found that nearly 80% of retirees have Social Security income.

Nebraska is among more than a dozen states — all with Republican governors — that have opted out of receiving the funding. Kim Reynolds criticized the federal food program as doing “nothing to promote nutrition at a time when childhood obesity has become an epidemic. Statistics from the U.S. Department of Agriculture showing a steady increase in food insecurity among Nebraska families could help explain that flood of calls, Day said. “This places Nebraska above the national average and gives us the 11th highest food insecurity in the nation,” she said. “As many of you know, food is more expensive than ever, and it’s squeezing low-income Nebraska residents hardest."

This summer, 12 people let me into their lives to tell me about their experiences in the aftermath of disasters, including hurricanes, floods, freezes, wildfires and derechos. All said, they did not receive the aid they expected, and the effects have been devastating. According to research on disasters and advocacy groups, these survivors’ experiences are very much the norm. The help Americans receive after disasters isn’t just inadequate, it’s complicated to navigate and painfully slow to arrive. From the amount of time it takes to complete recovery — measured in years, not months — to the labyrinth of policies, regulations, false promises and lawsuits, the reward for surviving a disaster is being forced into a system so cruel it constitutes a second disaster.
