The next generation of the "Internet of Bodies," or IOB, could bring technological devices and the human body closer together than ever before. Academic and author Andrea M. Matwyshyn, who coined the term in 2016, describes it as "a network of human bodies whose integrity and functionality rely at least in part on the internet and related technologies, such as artificial intelligence." Smart glasses, which can function as cameras, headphones or monitors, are another example of early IOB devices. These devices completely merge with the body while maintaining a real-time connection to an external machine and the internet. "As bits and bodies meld and as human flesh becomes permanently entwined with hardware, software, and algorithms, IOB will test our norms and values as a society," she wrote.

Hong Kong CNN —The top four finishers of the Beijing Half Marathon have been stripped of their medals after an investigation found three African runners deliberately slowed down near the finish line to let a Chinese competitor win, according to organizers. The three African runners were invited to join the race as pacemakers by Chinese sports company Xtep, which sponsored both He and the Beijing Half Marathon, according to the committee. But Xtep failed to note the trio as pacemakers to the race operator, Zhong’ao Lupao Beijing Sports Management company, the committee said. The committee disqualified the operator from hosting the Beijing Half Marathon and banned Xtep from sponsoring any more races this season. He is ranked 74th in the world in the men’s marathon by World Athletics and is expected to lead the way for Asian runners in the upcoming Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.

The company's shares have dropped 16% this year, mainly on concerns that new GLP-1 diabetes drugs such as Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Eli Lilly's Mounjaro could eat into the sales of its continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices. Hurdles in health insurance reimbursement and pricing could, however, keep market growth for GLP-1 drugs limited to a small number of patients in the near term, Abbott CEO Robert Ford said on Wednesday. Third-quarter sales of FreeStyle Libre, Abbott's CGM device used by diabetes patients, jumped 30.5% to $1.4 billion, lifting Abbott's shares 3% in morning trade. The numbers helped Abbott's medical device sales that stood at $4.25 billion, beating analysts' estimates of $4.16 billion, according to LSEG data.

Abbott posted a near 17% rise in quarterly sales of its medical devices to $4.25 billion, beating analysts' estimates of $4.16 billion. BERLIN (AP) — Tigst Assefa broke the women's world record by more than two minutes Sunday at the Berlin Marathon, as Eliud Kipchoge won the men's race for the fifth time but couldn't break his own record. Ethiopian runner Assefa, the winner in Berlin a year ago, ran 2 hours, 11 minutes, 53 seconds to break the previous women's record of 2:14:04 set by Brigid Kotsgei at the Chicago Marathon in 2019. His time of 2 hours, 2 minutes, 42 seconds was more than a minute and a half off the record he set in Berlin last year. Kipchoge broke the two-hour barrier in Vienna in 2019 when he ran 1:59:40 but it was not officially considered the world record. The German environmental group Last Generation had signaled it intended to disrupt the Berlin Marathon.

CNN —A novel trial that has been described as “the last roll of the dice” for a generation of HIV vaccines has entered its latter stages. Nearly 40 years since HIV was identified as the cause of AIDS, and 36 years since the first HIV vaccine trial, the medical community still does not have a working vaccine. But that is not necessarily why they were chosen to participate, said Eugene Ruzagira, PrEPVacc trial director. Evaluating the combination of a trial HIV vaccine and PrEP is a first, say organizers. “I did my very first HIV vaccine trial in 1991,” recalled Weber.

A recovery in non-urgent procedures and easing staffing shortages following a decline in COVID-19 cases has boosted the demand for medical devices. Sales at Medtronic's heart devices unit, its biggest revenue driver, increased 5.5% to $2.85 billion for the first quarter, above analysts' estimates of $2.78 billion. Revenue for the quarter rose 4.5% to $7.70 billion, topping analysts' average estimate of $7.57 billion. Its adjusted profit of $1.20 per share for the quarter ended July 28 beat estimates of $1.11 per share.

As part of the new law, the FDA must also update its medical device cybersecurity guidance at least every two years. A 2022 report released by the FBI cited research finding 53% of digital medical devices and other internet-connected products in hospitals had known critical vulnerabilities. The report listed a number of medical devices that are susceptible to cyber attacks, including insulin pumps, intracardiac defibrillators, mobile cardiac telemetry and pacemakers. A 2018 report from the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the Inspector General said the FDA was not adequately protecting devices from getting hacked. “FDA had plans and processes for addressing certain medical device problems in the postmarket phase, but its plans and processes were deficient for addressing medical device cybersecurity compromises,” the report said.
