Turkish security officials said Thursday that Syrian opposition groups initially launched a long-planned "limited" offensive toward Aleppo, where attacks targeting civilians originated. Besides backing opposition forces, Turkey has also established a military presence in Syria, sending troops into parts of the northwest. The opposition groups also seized heavy weapons and military vehicles belonging to the government forces, the agency said.

Reddit’s r/bald is a 143,000-strong community (comprised mostly of, presumably, bald men) offering advice, support and encouragement to those who’ve taken, or are considering taking, “the plunge” by shaving off their thinning hair. “If there was a top 10 of bald glow ups, you’d be in there somewhere,” reads one of the 13,000 replies. Friends and loved ones may tell us how great we’d look bald but, sadly, we often care more about what strangers (rather than people whose opinions really matter) think of us. There are other ways in which the platform’s design encourages courteous behavior among bald men and beyond.

Gavin Newsom plans to revive California's EV rebate if Trump ends the federal tax credit. Tesla sales in California, the US's largest EV market, have recently declined even as overall EV sales in the state have grown. Elon Musk, who has expressed support for ending the federal tax credit, said in an X post it was "insane" for the California proposal exclude Tesla. The federal electric vehicle tax credit, which was passed as part of the Biden administration's Inflation Reduction Act in 2022, provides a $7,500 tax credit to some EV buyers. The Tesla CEO said on an earnings call in July that ending the federal tax credit might actually benefit the company.

Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, hit back on Tuesday morning at President-elect Trump’s vow to impose 25 percent tariffs on all products coming into the United States from Mexico, signaling that her country was prepared to respond with retaliatory tariffs of its own. Ms. Sheinbaum also said that raising tariffs would fail to curb illegal migration or the consumption of illicit drugs in the United States, an argument that Mr. Trump had made in his warning on tariffs. “The best path is dialogue,” Ms. Sheinbaum said at her daily news conference, calling for negotiations with the incoming Trump administration while laying out steps that Mexico has already taken to assuage some of Mr. Trump’s concerns. Ms. Sheinbaum, reading from a letter she is planning to send to Mr. Trump, noted that illegal crossings at the border between Mexico and the United States had plunged from December 2023 to November 2024, largely as a result of Mexico’s own efforts to stem migration flows within its own territory.

The off-mall department store’s current CEO Tom Kingsbury is stepping down effective Jan. 15. Michaels CEO Ashley Buchanan will take over the top job at Kohl’s as Kingsbury departs, after leading the crafting retailer since 2020. While Kohl’s off-mall physical format has insulated it a bit more than other department stores, it has had a difficult several years. Kingsbury took over as CEO after Michelle Gass left Kohl’s to become president and then eventual CEO of Levi Strauss. Kingsbury had been a member of the Kohl’s board since 2021.
