All across France, there's a glut of châteaus for sale. Plans require approval by the French minister of culture, and work must be done by designated specialists. "I decided not buying a château in France was going to be more detrimental to my health than buying one." For many French sellers, what strikes Americans as romantic has come to feel like a curse. "I live in a château," Engel reminds himself when he's feeling overwhelmed.

New York CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s social media company is on fire on Wall Street. Up until very recently, Trump Media & Technology Group had been in meltdown mode. Its share price dropped to a record low of $12.15 on September 23, marking a stunning 82% crash from its high. Trump Media did not announce a sudden revenue stream or a flashy new product that could explain the move. “At today’s stock price of about $25, the stock is overvalued by 1,000% or so,” Ritter said, “suggesting a 90% drop will eventually occur.”

Jamie Dimon, one of the world’s most influential business leaders, is worried. The PE boom: The shrinking public market has private equity to blame — funds that pool money from investors to acquire or invest in companies. When a PE fund buys a public company, it takes that company private. The number of private companies in the US backed by PE firms has grown from 1,900 to 11,200 over the last two decades, according to JPMorgan data. Dimon’s company, of course, makes a huge amount of money from taking companies public, so he’s not exactly an impartial observer.

But the Pentagon was reluctant to use that funding, because there was no replenishment money left to refill the US inventories. The second official gave one example of being able to buy 25mm ammunition at a cheaper cost than originally expected after contract negotiations with the vendor. The Defense Department still has around $4 billion in presidential drawdown authority funds available for Ukraine, which allows the Pentagon to draw from its own stockpiles to send military equipment to Kyiv. But it would not be unprecedented for the Pentagon to find additional, unexpected sources of funding. Last year, the Defense Department announced that it had discovered an accounting error that led to DoD overvaluing the amount of aid it was providing to Ukraine by $6.2 billion. Asked on Tuesday whether the department was considering spending some of the remaining money, Pentagon press secretary Gen. Patrick Ryder said he had nothing to announce but that the Pentagon was continuing to explore ways to keep supporting Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told CNN this week that Ukraine will not win the war without continued US support.

In addition to the $355 million penalty — payback of what the judge deemed “ill-gotten gains” from his spurious financial statements — Trump is required to pay interest on that amount. James’ office calculates that, to date, Trump owes an additional $98.6 million in interest, bringing his total penalty to $453.5 million. Trump used $170 million of the $375 million to pay off a loan on the property. — $60 million, plus interest, from selling the rights to manage a New York City golf course in June 2023. Trump testified that regardless of what his financial statements said, banks did their own due diligence and would’ve qualified him for the loans anyway.

The witness stand in Justice Arthur Engoron’s courtroom at 60 Centre St., in Lower Manhattan, is an ordinary wood-paneled box off to the side of the bench. But for Donald Trump, who is on trial for fraudulently overvaluing his New York real estate assets, it might as well be a cage of kryptonite. That signature rambling filibuster has propelled Mr. Trump through every venture of his life, from real estate to reality television to the American presidency. He relies on it to control the room, to manipulate the crowd, and to avoid addressing any topic he doesn’t want to. That doesn’t work in court, where the judge is in charge, the rules of evidence are in effect and the witness has sworn to tell the whole truth.

But his testimony was overshadowed by a testy back-and-forth between Justice Arthur F. Engoron and one the Trump lawyers over the judge’s law clerk, Allison Greenfield. The lawyer, Christopher M. Kise, repeatedly objected to the clerk communicating with the judge through notes and suggested she has a bias. In his testimony Friday, Eric Trump consistently batted away questions about what he knew of the Trump Organization’s financial statements, claiming he did not know the granular details. During hours on the stand on Thursday in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, Eric Trump and his older brother, Donald Trump Jr., had blamed outside accountants for errors in company financial statements. The documents are at the heart of the civil case, which accuses the brothers, their father and the family’s Trump Organization of defrauding banks and insurers.

NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump returns to a New York City courthouse Tuesday to be a spectator at the civil fraud trial threatening to disrupt his real estate empire. His appearance was initially supposed to coincide with testimony by Michael Cohen, his former attorney turned foe. But Cohen's planned appearance on the witness stand was delayed until at least next week, due to a health problem. Instead of Cohen, Trump's courtroom visit is likely to overlap with the resumption of testimony from his company's assistant controller, Donna Kidder. The trial concerns six remaining claims in the lawsuit, including allegations of conspiracy, insurance fraud and falsifying business records.

Trump has sued the company founded by Christopher Steele, who created a dossier in 2016 that contained rumors and uncorroborated allegations about Trump that erupted in a political storm just before he was inaugurated. Trump is claiming he “suffered personal and reputational damage and distress" because his data protection rights were violated. Tomlinson said it "contained shocking and scandalous claims about the personal conduct of President Trump” and included allegations he paid bribes to Russian officials to further his business interests. Trump's case “is that this personal data is egregiously inaccurate,” he said. Tomlinson said Trump plans to vindicate himself in court by providing evidence that the report's claims were false.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump will back in court next week for his New York civil fraud trial, a person familiar with the former president’s plans told The Associated Press on Thursday, setting up a potential face-to-face showdown with fixer-turned-foe Michael Cohen, who is expected to testify. Trump is expected to attend the non-jury trial Tuesday through Thursday next week, according to the person who confirmed the plans, which were first reported by news website The Messenger. Outside, Trump decried the civil trial a “sham,” a “scam,” and “a continuation of the single greatest witch hunt of all time.” His campaign, meanwhile, attempted to capitalize with fundraising appeals tied to the proceedings. Trump isn’t required to be in court for the civil trial until he is called to testify in the few weeks. The civil trial, which doesn't have a jury because one is not required under the law, concerns allegations of conspiracy, insurance fraud and falsifying business records.

It is also a club, private beach resort, historical artifact and banquet hall with a ballroom that features gold leaf. The much smaller Palm Beach compound once owned by the Kennedy political dynasty sold for $70 million three years ago. SO HOW DID PALM BEACH COUNTY COME UP WITH SUCH A LOW TAX ASSESSMENT? The attorney general said the "staggering fraud" was meant to help Trump obtain favorable terms from banks and insurers. Christopher Kise, a lawyer for Trump, countered in his opening statement that Trump's financials were entirely legal. SIX CLAIMSFormer U.S. President Donald Trump attends the trial of himself, his adult sons, the Trump Organization and others in a civil fraud case brought by state Attorney General Letitia James, at a Manhattan courthouse, in New York City, October 2, 2023. Last week, the judge found Trump, his adult sons and 10 of his companies liable for fraud, describing in scathing terms how the defendants made up valuations. In his testimony, Bender said he relied on information provided by Trump and his companies when compiling Trump's personal financial statements. "The original numbers come from the Trump Organization, and any changes that would have been made at the end would have been approved by the Trump Organization," Bender said.
