The hospital, Baptist Health in Richmond, Kentucky, and the organ procurement group declined interviews with CNN. At the federal level, the Health Resources and Services Administration, through the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, is investigating, as well. She said the hospital told her that another scan showed no brain activity. The coordinator was in tears, Miller said, and the doctor who was supposed to do the organ procurement was upset and left. Miller said that as soon as the staff told TJ they’d take him back to the ICU, he calmed down.

On a crisp December morning in my small Southern hometown, my mother found my brother unresponsive in his bed. When law enforcement officers arrived, they performed testing to confirm fentanyl overdose was the cause of death. When the test turned positive, they informed my parents that it was unsafe to enter my brother’s room. It was unsafe for us to breathe the air in the room of someone who died “that way,” we were told. And as a physician who cares for patients who use fentanyl, I knew these claims were incorrect.

Before he started taking methadone, Vinny Parisi had overdosed 16 times from using street drugs, including fentanyl. Now, Mr. Parisi goes every weekday morning to an R.V.-size white van parked at a Days Inn in the South Bronx. “This definitely works, I’m living proof,” Mr. Parisi said on a recent Tuesday outside the van, where he was waiting with about a dozen other men from his residential drug treatment program. Mr. Parisi is one of an estimated 450,000 Americans who take methadone, a powerful weapon in the fight against the fentanyl overdose crisis hiding in plain sight. But it can also be hard to come by, because of government rules that have kept its distribution tightly controlled.

By the time I was 26, in 2020, I still hadn't outgrown the drinking phase I had started when I turned 18. After a particularly heavy night, I was rushed to the emergency room and spent the night in the hospital due to a drug overdose. He joked sometimes that when he saw my name flash up on his screen, it would give him a mild panic attack. He was always a firm but fair man, so I listened intently when he phoned me months later with a proposition. I updated my dad after every new bit of spending, proud that I hadn't sniffed it away.

(AP) — Lefty Driesell, the Hall of Fame coach whose folksy drawl belied a fiery on-court demeanor that put Maryland on the college basketball map and enabled him to rebuild several struggling programs, died Saturday. Driesell was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007, but his entry into the Naismith shrine proved more elusive. He went 9-14 in his debut, one of only two times over an entire season in which he would finish with a losing record as a college coach. Congratulations.”After leaving Maryland, Driesell was hired in 1988 by James Madison, a small Virginia school that finished 10-18 in 1987. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Democratic mayor of San Francisco is pushing a pair of controversial public safety proposals on the March 5 ballot, including one that would require single adults on welfare be screened and treated for illegal drug addiction or else lose cash assistance. San Francisco is in a struggle to redefine itself after the pandemic left it in economic tatters and highlighted its longstanding problems with homelessness, drugs and property crime. Violent crimes are low in San Francisco, but the city has long struggled with quality-of-life crimes. But she said San Francisco needs to do more. Yet Trent Rhorer, executive director of the San Francisco Human Services Agency, which provides cash assistance and employment services to low-income residents without dependent children, said the current situation is in conflict with the agency's mission: to improve lives.

By then, county officials were seeing the area’s fatal opioid overdose toll tick up. “We were grossly underprepared, like I think many places across the country were, for the opioid epidemic,” Stuby said. Like hundreds of U.S. communities, it's launched a drug court where people can avoid jail if they work on recovery. They can lead to an entry-level certificate for work in the field — a partial answer to a recovery workforce crunch. His research has shown that recovery support services — such as housing, community centers and peer coaching — can help.

Roedema, a former Marine who is currently suspended without pay, had been with the department for five years before McClain’s death. People should not, generally, inject into their bodies a substance they bought with cash from a stranger on the street. And many will not resort to best practices, like using a clean needle, and contract diseases that require lifelong treatment. In 2019, the former president's Department of Justice sued to stop a Philadelphia-based nonprofit, Safehouse, from opening what would have been the country's first safe injection site, citing a federal law originally aimed at crack houses. A third officer and two paramedics facing charges in McClain's death are scheduled for trial later this year. Charges were not brought for two years after McClain's death, by which time the case along with others had sparked outrage and a national reckoning over racial injustice in American policing. The indictments followed an outcry over McClain’s death during protests ignited by the police killing of George Floyd. He called McClain’s death “tragic,” but said that finding made it hard to prove that the officers’ actions caused his death. Cina said he couldn’t rule out whether the stress of being held down by the officers may have contributed to McClain’s death.

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — A pit bull puppy that California police believe got into its owners' fentanyl stash was administered an overdose-reversing drug and is recovering, officials said. The dog's owners, a man and a woman, were arrested and could face charges including drug possession and animal cruelty, according to the Irvine Police Department. “Then the female said, ‘Oh, I think my dog is overdosing,’ ” Oldoerp told the Los Angeles Times on Saturday. At the station, officers administered overdose-reversing naloxone to the dog, which made a “pretty quick” turnaround, Oldoerp said. Authorities will hold on to the puppy until there is a hearing to determine whether to give the dog back to its owners, the Times reported.
