‘Tis the season for giving and it’s come just in time for a 20-year-old cancer survivor in Oregon whose prosthetic leg was stolen out of his car earlier this month. They are offering up to $2,500 cash reward through the Crime Stoppers of Oregon program "for information that leads to the recovery of a stolen prosthetic limb." Root also has a "spare" prosthetic leg that he uses sometimes, but it isn't as comfortable, and he also relies on crutches. Earlier this month, Root went out for dinner with friends in downtown Portland and left the prosthetic leg in the trunk of his car. Irene Veldstra voiced her dismay on the GoFundMe account her brother started to raise funds to replace Root's stolen leg.

Nearly 63% of the US population has fluoridated water flowing through their taps, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Hawaii is the only US state without any fluoride in municipal taps; fluoridated water is only available there on military bases. As such, fluoridated water is now mandated on any military base with more than 3,300 people. Rumors have circulated that drinking fluoridated water can lead to bone cancer (osteosarcoma), but long-term studies from both the UK and US haven't found any credible evidence of higher rates in areas where people drink fluoridated water. Their review concluded that some studies of fluoride consumption have found links between higher fluoride water levels and lower IQs in kids.

But life at an American school was only a part-time gig for me. Related storiesIn Texas, a good education meant moving into the "good" neighborhoods to be zoned for the "good" schools. In Saudi, it meant succumbing to private school tuition, as only international private schools taught in English. My schedule was packed in Saudi ArabiaMy backpack was jam-packed with thick books from the sheer number of subjects we had to juggle in Saudi schools. I missed the posters stapled on tops of posters with dangling flyers that colored the walls of my American schools.

Todd Haimes, who rescued New York’s Roundabout Theater Company from bankruptcy and built it into one of the largest nonprofit theaters in America, died on Wednesday at 66. His death, at Memorial Sloan Kettering hospital in Manhattan, was caused by complications of osteosarcoma, according to a spokesman, Matt Polk. Mr. Haimes had lived with the cancer since 2002, when he was diagnosed with sarcoma of the jaw. As the artistic director and chief executive officer at Roundabout, Mr. Haimes had an extraordinarily long and effective tenure. He led the organization for four decades, turning the nonprofit company into a major player on Broadway, where it now runs three of the 41 theaters.
