Philadelphia Phillies managing partner and principal owner John Middleton signs autographs prior to the 2024 London Series game between the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies at London Stadium in London on June 9, 2024. The Philadelphia Phillies recently raised close to $500 million in capital from three new investors in a transaction that values the Major League Baseball team and its 25% stake in regional sports network NBC Sports Philadelphia at about $3 billion, according to two people familiar with the deal. Given that limited-partner stakes typically go for about 20% less than control stakes because LPs have no say in how the team is run, the $3 billion valuation equates to roughly a $3.7 billion control valuation. A little more than a year ago, Middleman purchased a 16.25% stake in the Phillies at a grossed up valuation of $2.8 billion. Based on revenue multiples, a $3.7 billion control valuation for the Phillies would be eight times 2023 revenue, compared with multiples of 5.3 for the Orioles and 6.7 for the Mets, according to historic revenue calculations.

Let’s do that now, because here’s what I think we’ve been watching:A World Series with possibly eight future Hall of Famers. So no World Series is ever catching the 1932 Series, when an incredible 13 eventual Hall of Famers took the field. How about saying you were there when Freddie Freeman took over a World Series in his own Freddie-esque way? And it looks exactly like that dude who trots — or sometimes limps — out to first base every night in this World Series. • Easy as 1-2-3 — We’re three games into this World Series, and Freeman has homered in all three of those games.

Like many baseball stadiums around the country, Tropicana Field's geographic location makes it vulnerable to hurricane winds or tornado-force winds, hail, storm surge and flooding. NFL stadiums could experience $11 billion in climate-related losses by 2050, according to a new report released by the climate risk analysis company, Climate X. Climate X said it's a wake-up call for state and local governments. If you had a problem there yesterday, that doesn't mean that it's going to be there tomorrow," said Kamil Kluza, co-founder of Climate X. Los Angeles would add another run on a Tommy Edman sacrifice fly but a miraculous sliding catch by Mets outfielder Tyrone Taylor limited the damage to a 2-0 deficit. The Houston Astros will not appear in the American League Championship Series for the first time since 2016 after being eliminated by the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. Not including the pandemic-shortened 2020 year, that’s the fewest number of wins the Astros have had since missing the postseason entirely in 2016. From 2017-23, not only did Houston appear in the ALCS every year, it made the World Series four times, winning twice and losing twice. The Astros’ run of championship league series appearances came under the specter of one of Major League Baseball’s most notorious scandals. The Astros were revealed to be using the sign-stealing system from as early as 2016 into the 2018 season — which encompassed their 2017 World Series win.

Opinion: I just don’t get watching organized sports

It’s usually these professional sport high holidays where I’m cornered into admitting I’m sports agnostic. The winning and losing of watching professional sports is a faux drama, a soap opera with injuries. The difference is, of course, that the wins and losses of politics don’t benignly reset at the start of the next season. It’s the watching, and caring about, professional sports as an adult that eludes my understanding. Forgetting who he was talking to, he began his explanation by comparing his home team to another professional underdog team.

Ten active major-league starting pitchers have won a Cy Young Award — and nine of them have spent time on the injured list in 2024. Larry Lucchino, who as a top executive with the Baltimore Orioles and San Diego Padres oversaw the design and construction of modern stadiums that evoke their surroundings — Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore and Petco Park in San Diego — and who as president of the Boston Red Sox preserved Fenway Park for generations, died on Tuesday. The Red Sox announced the death but did not say where he died or give a cause. He had been treated for cancer three times. In Mr. Lucchino’s 14 years with the team, the Red Sox won the World Series three times — the first of those championships, in 2004, broke an 86-year drought — and reached the postseason seven times. CNN —Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said on Thursday that he hopes the league’s investigation into superstar Shohei Ohtani is short, “but I just don’t know” how long it will take. The build-up to the new MLB season was overshadowed following the recent gambling scandal involving Ohtani and his former longtime interpreter Ippei Mizuhara. The Internal Revenue Service and Major League Baseball are investigating the matter, with the league trying to determine whether its strict rules against gambling have been broken. MLB commissioner Manfred can also penalize someone who goes outside legal sports betting entities and gambles with a bookie. The situation involving Ohtani has raised further questions abouts sport’s relationship with betting in the US as the industry continues to grow.

The immediate impact of the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday was viscerally clear: In minutes, the Baltimore Harbor went from a humming logistics hub to a chaotic search and rescue operation. Two construction workers who had been fixing potholes on the bridge were pulled from the water, with six more missing and presumed dead. Seeing container ships sail through the port was one of my earliest memories of global shipping. Last year, the Port of Baltimore processed 1.1 million 20-foot containers worth of cargo, making it the ninth busiest port based on trade volume in the United States and the most important port serving our nation’s capital. Peter G. Angelos, the longtime owner of the Baltimore Orioles who built a fortune as a class-action lawyer, died on Saturday. His death was confirmed in a statement from his family that was posted on the team’s social media account, which said that Mr. Angelos had “passed away quietly.” No cause was given, though the statement acknowledged that he had been ill for several years. Mr. Angelos’s death came as his family awaited approval by Major League Baseball owners to sell the team — valued, along with its assets, at $1.725 billion, according to The Baltimore Sun — to David Rubenstein, the president of Inner Harbor Sports. The sale was approved on March 20 by the Maryland Stadium Authority board, which was required under the terms of the team’s lease for ownership to be transferred.

CNN —Major League Baseball players have been faced with an unusual problem ahead of the new season: a malfunctioning wardrobe. Players and fans have already voiced their concerns about the new jerseys being worn this season, and on Thursday, as spring training games got underway, MLB Players’ Association (MLBPA) executive director Tony Clark also shared concerns about the pants. “A lot of the rhetoric is confirmation that the pants are see-through,” said Clark, according to ESPN. Players also wore them during last season’s All-Star Game, and Nike and MLB said they were well received at the time. “They’re designed to be performance wear as opposed to what’s been traditionally worn, so they are going to be different,” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said about the uniforms.
