Republican senators who met Monday with Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary, brushed aside sexual assault and other allegations against him. Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., called the allegations a “side issue” while lauding Hegseth’s ability to lead the Defense Department. Hegseth did not respond to shouted questions from NBC News about the New Yorker article and other allegations. Senators offered their full-throated support to Hegseth after the meeting, downplaying the accusations. The Trump transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Republican senators' remarks.

CNN —Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Defense, was pushed out as the head of two veterans’ advocacy organizations amid internal allegations of mismanagement and personal misconduct, The New Yorker reported Sunday. It also alleges that he sexually pursued female staffers, and that the organization ignored another staffer’s alleged sexual misconduct. It claims that his management team “sexually pursued” employees and divided the organization’s female staffers into two groups — “party girls” and “not party girls,” The New Yorker reported. The accuser told police that Hegseth physically blocked her from leaving a hotel room, took her phone and then sexually assaulted her. Years later, Hegseth paid the accuser in a settlement agreement that included a confidentiality clause, his attorney Timothy Parlatore told CNN in a statement last month.

Alice Hudson, who, after enrolling in a mandatory geography course in college, took a detour from her plan to become a professional translator and went on to devote her career to building one of the world’s premier public map collections, died on Nov. 6 in Manhattan. Her death, in a senior living facility, was apparently caused by complications of kidney disease, said Robert Trager, her nephew. Ms. Hudson was chief of the Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division of the New York Public Library from 1981 to 2009, presiding over what has been called the most heavily used public map room in the world. She oversaw the doubling of the collection, to more than 400,000 maps and 24,000 atlases, rivaling the holdings of the Library of Congress, the National Archives and the British Library. She mounted exhibitions on how topography influenced history on the American frontier and along New York City’s shoreline, and illuminated the overlooked contribution of women to cartography.

The United Nations’ mission to Afghanistan said Tuesday that the ruling Taliban had arbitrarily detained journalists 256 times since their takeover three years ago and urged authorities there to protect the media. In a reply accompanying the report, the Taliban-led foreign ministry denied having arrested that number of journalists and added that those arrested had committed a crime. Journalists in Afghanistan worked under “challenging conditions”, the U.N. mission (UNAMA) and the U.N. Human Rights Office said in a statement. It described the U.N. report as being “far from actual realities” and said security forces were working to protect journalists. The foreign ministry said the arrest figure was “exaggerated” and detentions took place subject to law.

Nordstrom on Tuesday beat Wall Street's quarterly sales expectations, as revenue grew about 4% year over year from shoppers buying clothing, shoes and activewear at both the company's namesake department store and its off-price chain. Compared with the second quarter, women's apparel, shoes and men's apparel sales in the fiscal third quarter also grew sequentially. Comparable sales increased 4% across Nordstrom's two brands, its namesake and its off-price chain, Nordstrom Rack. That easily topped analysts' expectations for 0.7% gains in comparable sales, according to StreetAccount. Nordstrom's sales growth, while modest, is notable at a time when sales of discretionary merchandise and the luxury category have been under pressure.

While economists say this holiday shopping season could ultimately be the most normal one (sales-wise) since before the pandemic, it’s also decked out with plenty of uncertainty. While it would set a new record as well (keep in mind, those figures aren’t adjusted for inflation), this holiday season might be a little more muted than last. A shortened holiday seasonA short shopping season, however, may force the hands of retailers who are looking to hold back on deep promotions. Donald Trump proclaimed that he would be the protector of women. That seems to involve anointing creeps from whom women need protection. If you want to see women flying high, dominating the landscape and unmasking a fake wizard, see “Wicked.”In Oz, women are defying gravity. In America, many have been grounded, under the thumb of a wicked wizard. Trump set his restoration’s macho tone in a return to Madison Square Garden for an Ultimate Fighting Championship event.
