In 1889, journalist Nellie Bly set off on a trip around the world, trying to make it under 80 days. "You see a huge emphasis being placed on building ships that were ever faster than the previous generation of ships," Goodman said. Once aboard the train, Bly began to receive telegrams from her editors and well-wishers. "Sometimes it literally literally just says, 'Nelly Bly's train,'" Behn said. For Behn, what Bly and Bisland did remains incredible and deserve to be remembered as much as Verne's story.

(AP) — Investigators say the blast that prompted evacuations near Union Pacific's massive railyard in western Nebraska last week appears to be accidental, but it's not yet clear what caused it. The chief investigator for the fire marshal’s office, Adam Matzner, said Tuesday that investigators haven’t found any sign of a criminal act connected with the explosion, so the incident appears accidental. A spokesman for the Federal Railroad Administration said Tuesday that he couldn’t provide any additional details about the agency’s investigation. North Platte is located about 230 miles (370 kilometers) east of Denver and about 250 miles (400 kilometers) west of Omaha. While he's willing to invest in that, mostly he wants to make sure Union Pacific's day-to-day operations are steadily improving. He's also working to speed up decision making at the railroad to help make Union Pacific more responsive to customers. We’re going to have the best service, and we’re going to have the best safety record. That will put pressure on Union Pacific’s profits. Railroad safety has been in the spotlight this year ever since a Norfolk Southern train derailed and caught fire in eastern Ohio back in February.

Aerial view of containers and cargo ships at the Port of Los Angeles on Jan. 19, 2022 in San Pedro, California. Union Pacific is no longer accepting exports or empty containers at its Denver rail terminal destined for the Port of Los Angeles, a proactive move that reflects the supply chain issues that have arisen due to ongoing West Coast port labor issues. That is critical for food and agriculture shipments, where products can spoil — the U.S. agriculture industry uses the West Coast predominantly for its goods. The Port of Los Angeles is the nation's busiest port, processing $440 billion in cargo value per year. Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary BNSF and Union Pacific are the railroads servicing the West Coast ports.

April 20 (Reuters) - Union Pacific Corp's (UNP.N) chief executive officer said on Thursday the railroad operator was considering slowing down the pace of hiring in the second half of the year amid a cloudy economic outlook, becoming the latest U.S. company to evaluate its staffing plans. CEO Lance Fritz told Reuters in an interview the outlook was turning a "little cloudier" for consumer-facing companies, which is making railroad volume difficult to predict. A possible slowdown in hiring comes at a time when railroads are struggling to move cargo on time, which has invited severe criticisms from regulators and customers. Shares of Union Pacific, which connects West Coast ports to key terminals such as Chicago, lost its gains in the day to trade flat in the afternoon session. Operating revenue for the quarter ended March 31 rose 3% to $6.06 billion, in line with analysts' estimates.

Despite its multiple interpretations and approaches, success is widely gauged by a railway’s operating ratio, a simple measure of how much it spends to make a buck. Union Pacific’s peers improved similarly, indicative of the antiquated ways the industry had been deploying resources. Union Pacific also found itself unable to bring back enough furloughed workers in areas where they were most needed. “In a significant departure from the railroad industry's recent past, we deliberately moved away from a singular focus on operating ratio,” he told lawmakers. “If we wanted to drive [operating ratio] lower over time, we could,” the board wrote in a letter to shareholders in late 2021.
Feb 27 (Reuters) - Shares of Union Pacific Corp (UNP.N) surged nearly 10% before the bell on Monday, a day after the U.S. railroad operator announced that its Chief Executive Lance Fritz would step down this year amid pressure from investor Soroban Capital Partners. The gains came after some Wall Street analysts backed the leadership change at the company, which has struggled with labor shortages and service issues. Union Pacific's shares have dropped more than 25% over the past 10 months. Other analysts said a new leadership has the potential to improve the company's operating ratio — a key profitability metric. In its most-recent quarter, the company flagged higher operating expenses caused by operational inefficiencies and the current economic environment hitting its revenue growth.
New York CNN —Union Pacific shares jumped 10% in premarket trading Monday after the railroad company announced CEO Lance Fritz will leave the company by year-end, following a call by an activist hedge fund for his ouster. Union Pacific just reported a record profit for the second straight year. And it said that the Surface Transportation Board, one of the regulators of freight railroads, ranked Union Pacific as providing the worst service among the major railroads. Union Pacific last year earned a net income of $7 billion, up about $500 million, or 7%, from the previous record profit it posted for 2021. Total employee compensation for the year came to $4.6 billion, far less than the $6.3 billion that Union Pacific spent repurchasing shares of stock in the period.

Union Pacific’s fourth-quarter profit and revenue fell short of Wall Street’s expectations. Hedge fund Soroban Capital Partners is pushing Union Pacific Corp. to replace Chief Executive Lance Fritz , arguing the railroad has underperformed on his watch, according to people familiar with the matter. Soroban is a longtime Union Pacific investor, one of the company’s biggest shareholders with a 1%-plus stake valued at about $1.6 billion, the people said.
Some rail investors are calling for companies to adopt a proposal to give workers paid sick leave. Currently, rail workers technically have no paid sick leave, a key demand in their contract negotiations. Now, some railroad shareholders want reasonable paid sick leave to be included as a benefit. "Getting workers paid sick leave cuts down on disease spread dramatically, leading to fewer absences. Now, additional paid sick leave could be put to a vote, if the shareholders pushing rail companies to consider it get their way.

U.S. railroad operators' volume woes to continue next year
  + stars: | 2022-10-19 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
Oct 19 (Reuters) - Volume woes at U.S. railroad operators are set to spill into next year as labor shortages continue to hurt the sector that is critical in connecting consumers with businesses and finished goods, according to analysts. The North America railroad industry has also been under scrutiny for working conditions. Railroad operators have tried to increase staffing levels, partly under pressure from U.S. regulator Surface Transportation Board, but have found it tough to recruit amid labor shortages.
