Four students were arrested on felony charges after buildings at the University of Rochester in New York were defaced with "wanted" posters targeting several Jewish faculty members, officials said. The four students were charged with felony criminal mischief and a fifth is being investigated, Quchee Collins, the university public safety chief, said in a news release Tuesday. "The posters identifying faculty, staff, and board members have instilled credible fear among those depicted, their families, and other members of our Jewish community," Mangelsdorf said in a message to the community. The university Department of Public Safety was made aware of the posters last week and immediately began removing them. The posters named certain university staff members and professors for alleged war crimes related to the conflict in Gaza, NBC affiliate WHEC of Rochester reported.

Social Security recipients can expect next year's annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to be the lowest since 2021, following cooler inflation readings in July and August. The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the official cost-of-living adjustment for 2025 on Oct. 10. Much of the political debate about Social Security remains focused on reforming — and ultimately paring back — the entire program. But earlier this year, Democratic Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania introduced the Boosting Benefits and COLAs for Seniors Act, designed to increase Social Security benefits at a rate "that actually reflects the costs seniors face." "The Boosting Benefits and COLAs for Seniors Act would help seniors contend with rising costs and ensure that Social Security remains a lifeline for all who need it.”

The leader of one of New York’s most elite private schools has left his post after an academic year marked by infighting among parents, students, faculty and alumni over the war in Gaza. Joe Algrant stepped down on Thursday as the head of school at Ethical Culture Fieldston School after a two-year tenure, “to pursue other personal and professional goals and opportunities,” according to an email sent to the school community by the Fieldston board of trustees. This spring, Fieldston was torn apart by pro-Palestinian student activism, including graffiti on the high school that drew widespread public attention. The friction at Fieldston was mirrored at private schools across the city. Mr. Algrant’s departure comes less that two months after the board of the Collegiate School, another elite private school in New York, announced that its head of school would depart, after an internal report found “disquieting problems of religious and cultural bias” at the school.

Grace, a 29-year-old publicist in New York, has regularly used a slew of dating apps for more than four years, with little luck. Among millions, a consensus is forming: Dating apps suck so bad that they might even be deliberately keeping us from finding love. In Tokyo, the city government is even releasing its own dating app, part of a campaign called Tokyo Futari Story ("futari" means couple). Bouke de Vries, an associate professor of philosophy at Ghent University in Belgium who's studied dating apps, argues that state-run dating apps are at least in theory better positioned to help people find partners without spending too much money or time in the process. On Monday, Trump's campaign announced that the Republican National Committee adopted the former president's platform for the Republican Party. It also promised to preserve Social Security and Medicare benefits without any cuts, including no efforts to raise the retirement age to receive federal benefits. The latest Social Security and Medicare Board of Trustees report found that the program will only be able to pay out full benefits for the next 11 years , after which 83% of the benefits will be available. The platform said that "Trump has made absolutely clear that he will not cut one penny from Medicare or Social Security. It seems obvious but survivorship bias is everywhere in society. We’re currently studying over 65-year-olds who have maintained unusually high levels of exercise into older age and have maintained excellent health. READ MORE: Why married people live longerWhile we know that their lifelong exercise is associated with their unusually good health into older age, we can’t directly say one causes the other yet. The Delaware College of Art and Design is set to close, the institution announced on May 23, citing low enrollment numbers for the upcoming school year, due in part to issues with the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Experts have continuously warned that ongoing problems with the new FAFSA form have resulted in fewer students applying for financial aid, which could contribute to already declining enrollment. That page was not accessible Wednesday, but can still be viewed through the Internet Archive. Enrollment at DCAD fell to 129 students, a loss of nearly 10%, between 2017 and 2022, according to federal data. "The Board of Trustees has worked diligently to find other funding solutions, but none allow us to overcome the longer-term problem of too few students," Dahlgren added.
