The results of the study, published Thursday in the journal Science, surprised whale researchers because they suggest the creatures can hear at much higher frequencies than expected. Scientists had never captured baleen whales and tested their hearing before because the animals are so large it could be dangerous to both the whales and researchers. Scientists know, from recordings and other observations, that baleen whales rely on hearing for social communication and that it’s important to their survival. Minke whales were a good target for audio testing because they’re the smallest baleen whale and a species whose hearing scientists don’t understand very well. He said the Minke Whale Hearing Project is on hold, but he’d like to pursue the topic further if he could secure funding.

Norway's royal family found itself embroiled in an intensifying scandal Tuesday after the son of the country's crown princess was arrested on suspicion of rape. They add to the growing list of charges against the Oslo socialite, the eldest child of Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a relationship prior to her marriage to Crown Prince Haakon. It was the police who brought the provisional rape charge, not the alleged victim, her lawyer Hege Salomon told Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten. CNN —Dead seals are washing up along beaches in South Africa’s port city of Cape Town, a coastal management official told CNN Friday, amid an outbreak of rabies in the marine animals. Cape Town, home to dozens of beaches and a coastline extending over 300 kilometers (186 miles), harbors thousands of Cape fur seals, a seal species native to southern Africa. He urged calm however, saying it is normal to find carcasses of Cape fur seals along the shoreline. While “lots” of dead seals have washed ashore this week, many of them have died naturally, he said. Oelofse said there was yet to be a seal-to-human transmission of rabies in Cape Town and the city’s authorities were working to prevent it.
