But Wall Street doesn’t believe the looming immigration crackdown will live up to Trump’s campaign trail hype. Nearly half of the investors anticipate annual immigration will average between 500,000 and 1 million under Trump, according to Goldman Sachs. The Wall Street bank found that more than 20% of investors expect immigration under Trump will be above the pre-pandemic pace of 1 million per year. “Our forecast is only moderately below the pre-pandemic trend because there are legal and logistical limits to executive action,” Goldman Sachs economists led by Jan Hatzius wrote in the report. Just about 10% of investors expect the Musk-led commission will be able to reduce government spending by more than $400 billion a year, Goldman Sachs found.

Mental health matters just as much as physical health, and boys should know it needs to be a priority. Nutrition and exerciseDuring puberty, boys’ bodies grow rapidly, and they need the right fuel to keep up. Boys need to understand that what they see online isn’t always real. Boys need to know that it’s OK to ask questions — whether it’s about feelings, their changing bodies or anything else. By creating an environment in which boys feel comfortable talking about their health, we’re giving them the tools they need to navigate a time of massive change.

Many Americans already have whiplash after recent swings in mortgage rates: After the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate peaked at nearly 8% last fall, rates fell steadily ahead of the Federal Reserve’s first interest rate cut in September. That trend has since reversed, and mortgage rates have climbed back up to nearly 7% as investors bet that the Fed will cut rates fewer times than initially expected due to recent strong economic data. This helps enable a reliable flow of money to mortgage lenders, allowing them to offer more affordable rates to would-be homebuyers. During the housing meltdown of 2008, the two companies were brought under government control in an effort to stabilize the housing market. Some analysts advocate for full privatization, meaning the government would not provide assurances to backstop the two mortgage companies.

In 2018, the state raised the legal age to buy tobacco products, such as cigarettes, cigars, and e-cigarettes, to 21. Nearby Massachusetts towns, such as Malden, Melrose, Reading, Stoneham, Wakefield, and Winchester, followed Brookline's playbook and also placed generational bans on tobacco products. In the US, California is trying to ban the purchase of tobacco products by 2073. New Zealand was the first country to impose a generational ban, but the country repealed that ban this year. "This bill will not take away the right to purchase nicotine and tobacco products from anyone who is already legally able to do so," he said.

Greg Abbott challenged President Joe Biden at almost every turn on the handling of the US southern border, as the state grappled with multiple border surges. Abbott described the upcoming border actions as a coordinated effort between border states and Washington. Texas officials and federal officials have historically worked together on the US-Mexico border. Texas state officials tout the work of their operation, arguing it served as a deterrent, and federal officials cite Biden’s executive action that levied harsher consequences for border crossers. “Texas has really been a lab for how mass round-ups of immigrants would work and how you can practically do it,” said Kristin Etter, the director of policy and legal Services at the Texas Immigration Law Council.

San Francisco-based Databricks is raising at least another $5 billion in its latest funding round — though it could raise up to $8 billion given the round is ongoing — according to several sources who asked not to be named because the discussions were private. The latest raise would value the company at $55 billion and could top the largest round of the year by OpenAI. The latest funding is designed to help Databricks employees sell shares, a source said. One source said the funding round makes Databricks' highly anticipated public debut less urgent. This summer, it acquired MosaicML, a $1.3 billion software startup that focuses on large language models that can churn out natural-sounding text.

When José Pérez Gómez came from Mexico more than 25 years ago, he scraped together money by selling handmade furniture on the streets of Fresno, Calif. Eventually, he turned that hustle into a full-fledged brick-and-mortar business, which allowed him to raise a family and send two daughters to college. Democrats had assumed that Mr. Trump’s threat of mass deportations and harsh words toward migrants would sour Latino voters across the country, especially those with family or friends who were undocumented. But for Mr. Pérez Gómez, personal economic struggles took precedence. Furthermore, he said, many immigrants in California’s Central Valley actually agreed with Mr. Trump that Democrats had allowed too many people to cross the border with the lure of asylum protections.

After a two-year influx of asylum seekers, New York City leaders are cautiously optimistic that the migrant crisis has begun to subside, and that the city’s emergency response is entering a new phase. Fewer migrants are arriving from the southern border. And on top of the slowdown, President-elect Donald J. Trump’s threats of mass deportations have injected a large dose of uncertainty into the situation. The threat of an immigration crackdown may accelerate a nearly five-month trend: The number of migrants in city shelters has declined for 19 consecutive weeks, as crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border have dropped to record lows. As of Nov. 17, the city was housing 57,400 migrants in 210 shelters, hotels and tent complexes — a drop of 17 percent from a peak of 69,000 in January.

[END TAPE]KRISTEN WELKER:According to the Washington Post, President-elect Trump plans to fire the team that worked with the special counsel. So, I think President Trump is picking reformers for these Cabinet positions. After the midterms Joe Biden said that there was no way President Trump would ever be back in the White House. He's going to sign some executive actions, but he's also going to then begin to roll out this plan. I also think he's going to face some skepticism by Republicans on using the military, for instance, going kind of into different states.

The words “private equity” are almost poetic in their power to obfuscate in such a way that most people simply tune out when they hear them. But there’s a reason workers tend to have a negative association with private equity. Per Bloomberg, Apollo “built its name as the scrappiest private equity and distressed-debt investor on Wall Street by buying businesses and loading them up with debt that offered creditors meager protections in the face of default.”Historically, private equity deals were largely handled by big banks. Private equity firms now hold controlling stakes across an array of industries, including supermarkets, housing, health care, fashion, restaurants and vet clinics. And other efforts to force more transparency and accountability in private equity have similarly faced opposition.

Deportation often hinges on diplomacy – and has been a steep challenge for the US when dealing with countries where there are frosty relations. Taken together, it’s a return to a hardline approach meant to get countries receiving deportees to comply and attempt to curb migration. But sources close to and involved in discussions argue they’ve identified the incentives and pressure points to have countries cooperate. The executive actions and reviews underway by the Trump team include the return of the program informally known as “remain in Mexico,” which requires migrants to stay in Mexico during their immigration proceedings in the US. “A second-term Trump administration will expand ‘burden-sharing’ deals with Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador that cut off pathways to the US for asylum-seekers.
