Lucknow, India (AP) — A fire tore through a neonatal intensive care unit in a hospital in northern India, killing 10 newborn babies and injuring 16 others, authorities said. The fire occurred late Friday at a hospital in Jhansi city, Uttar Pradesh state. Brajesh Pathak, the deputy chief minister of the state, visited the hospital and met with families on Saturday. Rescuers had to break through windows to reach the newborn babies. In May, at least six newborn babies died in a fire at a children’s hospital in New Delhi, three years after a hospital fire in the western state of Maharashtra killed 10 newborns.

Twelve newborns were rescued from the hospital, but six died in the fire, Atul Garg, Delhi Fire Services chief told CNN. One of the rescued babies is in a serious condition, and the five others are receiving medical attention, Garg said. The rescued babies have not been identified as authorities have yet to find their birth records, Garg said. In 2021, 10 newborn babies died in a hospital fire in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.

Women who cut sugar cane in the Indian state of Maharashtra are getting unnecessary hysterectomies, often as a way to keep working, undistracted by periods, pregnancies or gynecological checkups. My colleagues and I traveled across the impoverished district of Beed, which is home to many migrant sugar-cane workers. We visited tiny villages and met laborers in their homes. We talked to their employers, visited sugar mills, interviewed doctors and reviewed medical records. We interviewed women who cut sugar cane for companies that supply household brands including Coca-Cola and a major franchisee of PepsiCo, which have helped make the state a powerhouse for sugar, one of India’s most important industries.

Young girls are pushed into illegal child marriages so they can work alongside their husbands cutting and gathering sugar cane. Labor brokers loan money for the surgeries, even to resolve ailments as routine as heavy, painful periods. Hysterectomies keep them working, undistracted by doctor visits or the hardship of menstruating in a field with no access to running water, toilets or shelter. But for many sugar laborers, the operation has a particularly grim outcome: Borrowing against future wages plunges them further into debt, ensuring that they return to the fields next season and beyond. Workers’ rights groups and the United Nations labor agency have defined such arrangements as forced labor.

Hong Kong CNN —At least 25 people have been killed after a bus carrying a wedding party burst into flames after crashing in India’s western state of Maharashtra on Saturday. Baburao Mahamuni, Deputy Superintendent of Police in Buldhana, said the incident had taken place on the Samruddhi Mahamarg expressway, CNN’s Indian affiliate News 18 reported. Mahamuni said the injured were being taken to Buldhana Civil Hospital. “Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has expressed deep grief over the horrific accident of a private bus on the Samruddhi highway near Sindkhedaraja in the Buldhana district,” the tweet read. It said the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund would provide around $6,000 to the families of each person killed “in this unfortunate incident”.

The government collected 1.45 trillion rupees as GST in June 2022 and a record 1.87 trillion rupees in April 2023. It expects to garner 9.56 trillion rupees through GST in the current fiscal year that ends in March 2024. India's nominal growth is estimated to be 10.5% in the current fiscal year.
