A cleaning company has been fined $171,000 after federal investigators found 11 children working a "dangerous" overnight shift at a meat processing plant in Iowa. The U.S. Labor Department said in a statement that it found the children working for sanitation company Qvest LLC at the Seaboard Triumph Foods pork factory in Sioux City, Iowa. Caitlin Clark has joined an ownership group looking to create a National Women's Soccer League team in Cincinnati, Ohio. Cincinnati is a growing favorite among cities looking to become the 16th NWSL franchise, with other potential outposts including Denver, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Nashville. "The NWSL Cincinnati bid team is thrilled that Caitlin Clark has joined our ownership group in pursuit of bringing a women's professional soccer team to our city," the NWSL Cincinnati bid team wrote in a statement. Bay FC, which played its first season this year, spent $53 million to cover the NWSL expansion fee. The NWSL declined to comment on Clark's involvement with Cincinnati's ownership group.

President-elect Donald Trump Wednesday named former Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker as his pick for the next ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a key alliance that Trump derided for years. He served just three months in the position until Bill Barr was confirmed as attorney general. Before becoming acting attorney general, Whitaker served as chief of staff to Sessions when he was attorney general. Trump has long criticized NATO, accusing European allies of not contributing enough toward defense spending. During the campaign, Trump also indicated he would only adhere to NATO’s mutual defense commitment for countries who are contributing enough of their annual budgets to defense. He served as the former acting attorney general in Trump’s first term and temporarily led the Justice Department after Trump fired Jeff Sessions. During brief tenure at the top of DOJ, Whitaker quickly took charge of Mueller from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. New York CNN —Top pollster J. Ann Selzer will retire from the Des Moines Register’s famed Iowa Poll and the survey will “evolve” after it failed to accurately capture former President Donald Trump’s strong support in the 2024 election, resulting in a 16-point miss. Trump ultimately swept to victory over Harris in the state by a 13-point margin, winning the actual vote 56-43%. Prior to the 2024 survey, the Iowa Poll under her stewardship had been considered by many to be the methodological gold standard. As of June 2024, election forecaster Nate Silver gave Selzer an A+ rating. In an op-ed for the Register, Selzer said that her decision to part ways with the poll predated the erroneous results.

Political experts told Business Insider that the Iowa poll is significant for the Harris campaign given that the demographic makeup of Iowa — rural, older, and largely white voters — is similar to some key swing states. A Philadelphia man admitted to reporting a hoax mass shooting and then a bomb threat in retaliation over a fantasy football argument, authorities said Wednesday. "On August 15th a man named (the victim) is headed around oslo and has a shooting planned with multiple people on his side involved. Norwegian authorities spent 900 man hour investigating and disproving that threat, Fish said. “While already being prosecuted for one hoax threat spurred by, of all things, his fantasy football league, Matthew Gabriel inexplicably decided to send another,” U.S. Attorney Jacqueline Romero said. Court documents did not outline the nature of Gabriel's beef with the University of Iowa student and Fish declined to reveal those details.

Law enforcement officers in Norway and the US dedicated five days and hundreds of hours to investigating the threat, prosecutors said. While investigating Gabriel for the international hoax in Norway, prosecutors said they learned that Gabriel emailed another fictitious threat earlier this year – this time to the University of Iowa. In March, Gabriel emailed the university indicating the same fantasy football group member was threatening to “blow up the school,” which Gabriel knew was untrue, prosecutors said.
